RUNFORTHEROSESDAN WINS OPENING DAY AT SANTA ANITA

Opening Day at Santa Anita Racetrack. The winner, and 2-1 favorite, Runfortherosesdan, "made his presence felt throughout". Bred by Barry Shapiro (CA). Trainer: Peter Miller. Owners: Michael Kowalski, Barry Shapiro, and John Vanderslice. This is the photo John Vanderslice just sent me. In the enclosed letter he wrote: "It meant a great deal to both Barry (a lifelong fan of Dan's music) and myself to 'get a winner's circle picture for Dan'."

John was Dan's longtime Production Manager and friend. I know you'll be as touched as I am by this lovely tip of the hat to Dan. Thanks, Slice, Barry, and Michael.

On December 16th we closed the DanFan Provisions Zazzle store. In its one year of operation it was a great success, and we learned a lot from it, but here's the deal: as you know, we only charged a 10% markup on each item - the rest of the price you paid went to Zazzle. Bottom line: in that one year we made almost $7,000 and Zazzle made $70,000! Now of course, they have overhead, printing costs, and S&H, but that still leaves a lot of profit that could have gone to the PCF for cancer research. So we are re-thinking our fundraising strategy. We learned what kind of items you liked best, and we will take that knowledge forward and find a way to make our efforts and your dollars go even further. Thanks for making our first foray into online fundraising such a great experience!

The limited edition Dan Fogelberg "Quest" Lapel Pin

Buy it at the Prostate Cancer Foundation website.
3/4" (same size as a penny) Cloisonne lapel pin with green, red, gray, and white enamel on gold metal. Cost: $10 plus shipping & handling, all proceeds go to the PCF to fund prostate cancer research. This 3/4" size is a limited edition of 5,000.

Designed by Jean Fogelberg exclusively for the Prostate Cancer Foundation
.The symbolism of the design:

~ The Scottish sword - Dan was half Scots-Irish (as many of you know, his mother was born in Scotland); he fought a valiant battle against cancer; and he was my knight in shining armor (and apparently, many of you felt the same way).

~ The Fleur-de-lis (flower of life) was used in Scottish heraldry, and is said to symbolize many things, but among them: purity, light, life, and hope.

~ The guitar is a rendering of one of Dan's favorite Stratocasters, used on stage over many years.

~ Deep forest green and gold were Dan's favorite color combination.

"Dan Fogelberg’s posthumously released “Sometimes a Song” the #1 music download.

Single eclipses Grammy winners while funding prostate cancer research.

Jean Fogelberg gave the world a very special gift on Valentine’s Day. She released a song that her husband, Dan Fogelberg, gave to her on Valentine’s Day in 2005, “Sometimes a Song”. The single immediately climbed to the very top of the online charts.

“Sometimes a Song” was the #1 downloaded song on Amazon for four straight days, and is still in the top ten a week later. Dan’s song has stayed atop the iTunes folk genre since it was released and is in the top 100 songs downloaded at Wal-Mart.com.

This success is remarkable given that the single was released during Grammys’ week. “Sometimes A Song” had to compete with the annual surge in online sales of Grammy Award-winning singles and albums. Dan’s march to the top of the charts demonstrates the huge affection of his fans, and their support for prostate cancer research."

The "Valentine Song"

"In February of 2005, Dan went to Colorado for a few weeks to supervise some ranch business and to do some work in the studio. I stayed in Maine to oversee the final construction phase of our Maine house. It was hard for us to be so far apart for so long, especially since we would miss Valentine's Day together.

On the afternoon of the 14th, the florist delivered a dozen long-stemmed red roses; FedEx delivered a CD of a song Dan had written for me for Valentine's Day. "Sometimes A Song" is available for digital download at iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody and WalMart.com.

100% of proceeds from all digital sales will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Thanks for all of your support, encouragement, and condolences.
~ Jean Fogelberg"

Special thanks to Irving Azoff.
Thanks also to Jared Siegel, Steven Zap, Bob Ludwig of Gateway Mastering Studios, WLTW 106.7 Lite FM New York, iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, WalMart.com, Clear Channel, and all the radio stations and online music spinners who helped us get the word out.

Thanks as always, to Deborah and Laurie of "The Living Legacy" website for everything they have done, and continue to do, out of love and respect for Dan.

Sunday, December 16

Dear friends,

Dan left us this morning at 6:00am . He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side. His strength, dignity, and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.
A message from Jean

August 13, 2005
A personal letter from D.F.

I cannot adequately express my gratitude to all of the thousands of wonderful people who have sent us such incredibly moving and supportive e-mails via the Living Legacy web site. I am quite certain that the love and prayers that have been directed to us from all over the world have had a tangible and potent healing effect. It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years. Each one of you who have taken the time and effort to reach out to Jean and I have helped immeasurably to uplift our spirits and keep us looking strongly forward during some very rough moments.

I currently have no plans to return to the concert stage or the recording studio in the foreseeable future, but who knows? At least for now, I prefer to keep my options open.

Again my deepest thanks and love to all,

Dan

Now for the sermon.

To each and every man....

I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) and DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) a test EVERY YEAR.

The medical community suggests this for men over 50, but men with a family history of prostate cancer, and African American men should start getting tested at age 45. Men with two of these risk factors should start getting tested at age 40.

The PSA test is a simple blood test...it only takes a minute or two. The DRE, okay, every man squirms at the thought of this exam, but hey, it too takes only a minute or two, and IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Prostate cancer can be very slow growing or very aggressive, but detected early while it is still confined to the prostate gland, it can usually be treated and cured successfully.

Once it spreads beyond the prostate it is called Advanced Prostate Cancer. At this point it becomes imminently more life threatening and harder to treat. Do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor and GET CHECKED REGULARLY. I promise you, you DON’T want to go through what I'm going through if you can avoid it.

Education and awareness are key. I urge you to follow the link below to the Prostate Cancer Foundation web site and read up on how best to protect yourself and reduce your likelihood of developing this terrible disease.
