THE "DEAR DAN" LETTERS

In May of 2005, a PSA test revealed that Dan had prostate cancer. That first test showed a level of 151. A week later a follow-up test showed a level of 364. The cancer was raging through him. We met with a well-known surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital only to learn that the cancer had spread beyond the prostate and was not operable. From that point on, treatment decisions would be made by our new oncologist, Dr. Kaufman.

We now had a definite diagnosis, a doctor, and a plan: we would finish the house we were building in Maine and drive to Boston for treatments. Dan wrote an email to his closest friends. Read more...

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Dan wasn't always a cat person; before his first wife, Maggie, brought a fluffy little black kitten home, he was a dog person. His great love for the wild places included the animals, both wild and domestic.

RIP Deb Jelinek

We are very sad to report the sudden passing of Deb Jelinek on March 25th.

Deb sent out the Living Legacy/Dan Fogelberg Newsletters for many years, and we will do our best to maintain Deb's high standards as we now take it on.

Please bear with us during this transition.

March 25th, 2019

On July 2, 2003 Deb Jelinek finally got to meet her idol, Dan Fogelberg, backstage after a concert. Thirty minutes to hang out with the man she had dedicated her life to honoring may not sound like much, but it meant the world to her.

In the early days of the web Deb had a website, thelivinglegacy.net. When we needed a place to post information on the web, Dan and I decided to give that information to Deb, because she didn't have a gossipy forum on her site like some of the other sites. Eventually I learned website design and Dan and I created danfogelberg.com. By then, Deb and I had become friends and stayed in touch - we were both self-taught website designers and often shared programming problems and solutions, and Deb sent out our joint newsletters.

When Dan was diagnosed with cancer, Deb collected well-wishes from thousands of fans on her website, printed them in a huge album, and sent them to Dan, which was a great comfort to him. After Dan died, Deb had an idea to bring fans together to celebrate him in Peoria and from that idea the memorial site, a foundation, and many good friendships evolved.

Deb passed away today from complications from pulmonary edema. Her wonderful husband Jon kept her friends informed from the day she was taken to the hospital ten days ago and our thoughts are with him now, during this most shocking and painful time.

Rest in peace, Deb.

A TRIBUTE TO DAN FOGELBERG

George Harrison was one of Dan’s musical heroes; he wept when he learned of George’s death due to cancer. Then in 2003 the tribute ‘Concert For George’ was released. Dan watched the film and listened to the album many times, but after he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer the following year I could see it held new significance for him. Now that he was facing his own battle with cancer it was only natural that he would wonder if his friends and peers would care enough to pay tribute to him in a similar manner when he was gone.
