"Dear Dan" Letters
December 2005
I have been a fan of Dan's since 1975 and as much as I love music from other artists, not one of them have inspired me like Dan Fogelberg. To have only seen him from a distance in concerts the news of his illness shocked me as if he was a friend or next door neighbor. In some ways we have grown up together through his lyrics and the licks of his guitar and piano. As you grow older in life you think there are certain people in life you wish you could meet and become friends and Dan is one of those people. I keep him and his family in my prayers and look forward to the day his doctor says "Dan, you are HOME FREE"
As I listen to your Christmas CD, I just wanted to send you the warmest wishes for a happy and holy Christmas season. I wish you healthy and happiness in the new year. God bless ~ Hugh Beggins
Every Christmas season brings my love for Dan's music welling up. Hope everyone is healthy and happy as we prepare for the New Year.
Hi Dan, My name is Doug - a 46 year old fan of many, many years. I have felt compelled to write to you for a very long time. Your music has been such a part of me since the days of Home Free and I cannot listen to your music without a cascade of memories. Your songs were the soundtrack to my first "real love," and my wife and I turn to your gifts for inspiration and comfort now. My dearest friend and roommate in college and I would play guitar together and attempt to harmonize with your records in the background and your music constantly was playing in our apartment. Later, when I was in grad school, my dear friend (his name was Dan also) collapsed at the finish line of a half-marathon and died. The years passed and I continued to listen to your music and remember. In 1997, during a bout with the flu, I had a routine blood test that resulted in devastating news. I was diagnosed with kidney disease and was told that one day I would experience kidney failure. Two weeks prior to that, my wife and I had welcomed the birth of our second child - a beautiful boy. My life was turned totally upside down - from total joy to deep despair. I continued on with decreasing kidney function until last spring when my kidneys finally failed and I was told I needed a transplant immediately. Another friend who had lived with Dan and me all those years ago in college offered to donate a kidney to me and amazingly he was an almost perfect match. I had the surgery and so far I am doing well. Through it all, your music has brought me comfort, hope and strength.
Forgive the rambling nature of this note. My purpose is to thank you for the gift of your music and to tell you how much your work has meant to me over so many years. I know what it means to battle a life-threatening disease and I wish you strength and comfort as you successfully face this hurdle. You will prevail, Dan. You have multitudes of people praying for you and sending positive energy. Thank you for what you have meant - and will continue to mean - in my life. All the best in your recovery ~ Doug Anthony
Hi Dan, I am so happy to hear that you are doing well on your journey. The positive energy and spirit power that you have sent out into the world via your music is simply being reflected back to you in the form of healing thoughts and prayers. My hope is for your "total healing" as opposed to simply a cure of the physical manifestation. With that, I encourage you to make certain that you get a complete screening for mycoplasma, as its complete eradication from the body will facilitate healing from any form of cancer. Dr. Garth Nicolson (Calif.) is an expert on the relationship between cancer and mycoplasma and more than happy to share his expertise with any and all. My best to you and your family. From Missouri with love and wishes for peace.
"The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands on positions of comfort and convenience but where he stands on positions of challenge and controversy. So on some questions Cowardice asks, "Is the position safe?" Expediency asks, "Is the position politic?" Vanity asks, "Is the position popular?" But Conscience asks, "Is the position right?" Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dear Dan, I heard news yesterday on the radio, after they played "Same Old Lang Syne", that your treatment was encouraging and your outlook was much better than months ago.I am so glad to hear this positive news.Your music has always been an inspiration to me and you've given us so many memories, music that has touched our lives in so many ways. You are in my prayers and I know that faith in God can be a powerful ally in the fight against illness. May the Lord be with you at this time when you need His healing powers. I am over 50 and I plan on having a physical exam in the very near future. God bless and good luck and hopefully you'll be able to return to the stage someday.~ Tony Bova - Latrobe,Pa
Dan - I'm a registered nurse, and became oncology certified a few years ago. I often see the many ways that all types of cancer can affect lives, but when it strikes one who has created some of our generations most beautiful and memorable music, it's especially difficult to accept. I had the unforgettable pleasure of seeing you perform in Little Rock, Arkansas a few years back. From that moment on, my standard of what a true artist was, became apparent. I've become comfortably familiar with your soothing melodies, your poetic lyrics, and your voice of integrity that screams out in songs like "Face The Fire". You've helped so many with your love of music, and many more with your love of justice, and freedom. In my deepest prayers for a miraculous recovery, stay well...and enjoy your life for many years to come. ~ Rodney B
Hi Dan, Today, in the never-ending attempt to replace my old vinyl recordings with CDs, I purchased copies of Captured Angel and Nether Lands. Upon listening, I was taken back to the times when I first heard these incredible pieces of work. They sounded just as good and relevant as when I first heard them. I cannot adequately describe the feeling I got upon hearing them again. I can’t stop listening. And although ALL your music throughout the years has been an influence in my life, I consider these two albums as being as close to perfection as a musician/songwriter/composer can get. I came to your website tonight because of this, and was (sadly) surprised to read about your recent health situation. But I am SO glad to hear of the good news which you wrote about on the ‘News’ page. I will be sending good thoughts your way and keeping you in my prayers. I feel positive that you will stay ahead of this. On a personal note, I am in the health care field, but am also a musician, and will be coming out with a CD in a few months, as an independent artist. I am not using this forum to promote myself at all… but I need to tell you that in the liner notes, I ‘secretly’ thank several musicians for being a profound influence on me (by only using their initials). The ‘DF’ refers to you, I could not have done it without you. Thank you. All the best to you… and thank you for your message for encouraging all men to stay current with their physical exams. You are doing nothing but great things. There is a brilliant light and power within you. Take good care. Love ~Ryan
Dear Dan - blessing and good wishes for a wonderful holiday season with your wife and family and for a healthy, happy 2006. As a 15 year person living with cancer, I can assure you that it does get better and there is always hope. I have been a fan since the early 70's and your music has been a constant companion for my life through the good and the bad. I wish you all the love and happiness that life has to offer. ~ Susan
Thank you for sharing your time, talent and treasure over these many years. From the early vinyl years to my iPod now, the music and stories continue to move me. I feel, based on your ability to story-tell through music, that this part of your life as well will have to be shared through music. I can understand if you can't but it will be a great loss if you don't. Again thank you for the profound truths you share by using your own experience. My prayers continue for you and your family. God Bless ~ Jeff Barnecut
Dan, Your music has moved many. Your blessings touch all with whom you have shared your gift. I am a Peoria native and I remember the Lamplighters. Dan Miller and Rick Michael were in my Boy Scout Troop, I have to tell you that I really enjoyed their "inside" stories about the band. Years have passed since those times, I'm older, wiser and lucky to have shared your music. My best wishes to you and your family as you continue the journey that we all share. You will be with us all days, in all ways. Sincerely ~ Bill Sellers
Dan, May you and your family know the Love and Shelter that only God can provide you. These are trying and painful times for all of you, please know that you are all in my prayers and good wishes. May God provide you the comfort and solace you seek during these times. God Bless ~ Robert N Watters
Dear Dan: All I can say is, May God give grace to you and heal you, while giving you strength as He makes you His messenger about this cancer. My father-in-law went through a difficult period with this and is now living life cancer-free. You will make it there, too! My husband and I are big fans since college (my dear friend from Pekin really "introduced" us) and your music graced our wedding and many other joyful occasions since, we constantly regale our children with it. "Lessons Learned" is our song! Thank you for being a painter in words and music, you have been an inspiration and a gift. We are praying for you and sending our love to you in the Spirit. Blessings of peace and joy to you and your family this Christmas, and a joyful and healthy New Year! ~ Rev. and Mrs. Larry Salings of Missouri
Dan, I was visiting a friend in Nashville last month, playing one of your CD's in the car when she mentioned your battle with prostate cancer. I was deeply saddened by the news. Though I have never met you, your music has been so much a part of my 36 years that I felt as if I'd just heard a relative was ill. I've often tried to figure out my single favorite Fogelberg song, and I can never whittle the list down to less than about 15! I will daily continue to pray that the Lord Jesus will comfort you, and heal you. Thank you for so many wonderful memories. We're all pulling for you. God bless ~ Dave D. in St. Pete FL
Dan, My sister and I have been thinking about you quite a bit and it is such good news to hear that you are doing better. Just yesterday I was listening to your Phoenix album and still, after all these years, I was so moved, inspired and encouraged by your words and music. You have a rare talent for touching the soul. Thank you so much for the many times that you have helped me deal with and think about my life events. I wish you continued health and I will keep you in my prayers. ~ Betsy Johnson - Baltimore, Maryland
Dear Dan: I just heard about this today and to say the least I was shocked. I cannot tell you what your music has meant to me over the years. There were times when I thought that you knew me and were writing specifically about my life and my experiences. There were a couple of times in my life where I was really struggling personally and it seemed like you had written songs that addressed those issues and relationships head on ("Once Upon a Time" is one that is very special). I believe that God speaks to us in many ways other than a direct voice and one of those ways is through the talents and gifts of others. Ones like you! I believe that your God-given talents have blessed many people and given many people the encouragement or at least some understanding to allow them to press on. I believe that it was no accident that I heard your songs when I did and I am extremely grateful for you and your gifts. I had the pleasure of seeing you at Red Rocks in Denver back in 1987 and it was an amazing show. I need to let you know that although we've never met, I feel like you know me and I consider you an amazing and gifted songwriter and musician.
When I read about your illness, I was deeply moved. I pray for you and Jean through these times. I am happy to hear that progress is being made. I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts and hope for continued improvement. A verse to keep next your heart is Philippines 4:13 which reads: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". I wish you continued improvement and good health. I pray for strength for you and Jean both and wish you all the best life has to offer. I'd also like to thank you for your 'sermon'. I turned 40 last year and I had my first PSA and DRE this year and plan on continuing it, I agree that early testing/detection is the key. You have been a blessing to so many. I'd like to wish you and Jean both a very Merry Christmas, may you have a blessed holiday season. ~ Kevin - Hartig, Loveland, CO
Dear Dan, I have always enjoyed your music and especially "Same Old Lang Syne " - it has a very special place in my heart from years ago. I am a cancer survivor and I know the treatments are very difficult but I hope and pray the Lord will bless you and your family and see you through, so we can enjoy more of your music in years to come. Merry Christmas! and Best Wishes for the New Year! Sincerely ~ Susan from Dothan, AL
Dear Dan, Way back when I was a dreamy-eyed youngster I envisioned myself a songwriter and singer. You were then a great inspiration to me. A few years after I entered and was selected as one of the winners of the American Song Festival (I think it was 1979 or 80), and received a recording contract offer from Arista records. During that same time, I was struggling with trying to find out what I truly was supposed to be doing. Obviously, I ended up turning away from the recording business and entering the ministry.
Recently--a few years ago--I was pressed by some of our members to play publicly again in our contemporary Christian praise band. As I tried to regain my musical memory and retool my playing and singing skills, I went back to my record collection to find something with which I could sing and practice. I chose your albums, which had been very inspirational to me as a 20-something young singer/songwriter. Anyway, all of this brought me to once, again, enjoy your gifts of song. While hunting around the internet to see if you were still performing, I discovered your struggle with cancer. Though I've never really gotten much further than I once was musically speaking. Prayer matters. I've seen the powerful effects of it upon those who do it and upon those for whom it is offered. I cannot say that God will intervene to eliminate the cancer you have, but I do know that He has allowed for the great minds who practice our medicine to pursue cures that will one day eliminate it from our experience. I know that He has given men and women the capacity to love deeply and sacrificially, in order to comfort and encourage us in times of great need. I know that He has declared that what matters most in this life is that we love one another, as we learn to love from Him. And I know that so long as you hang on to those truths, and choose to live your life for something other than just survival, you will see a future worth having. I am truly sorry that you have had to suffer this illness. I will pray for you and yours, even as I give God thanks for all that you and your music has meant to me and so many others. May God bless you ~ The Rev. William Lee Kinney
Hey Dan, My name is George Nash. I live in Fort Worth, Texas. I have been a fan of yours for many years and have respected you in all aspects of your music, your love for nature, and your free spirit. I am also a guitar player and have been greatly influenced by you. Having seen you over 15 times in concert, although I've never met you personally, I feel I know you. The warmth I have felt during your performances and the way you captivate your audience has always made me a little envious of you as a performer. I was so sorry to hear about your life-threatening illness. You are in my prayers, and I hope that God will look down upon you not only as a great talent but also for the wonderful man that you are. I recently had a scare from the doctors myself, but thanks to God my diagnosis turned out to be only an infection of my prostate. My older brother was diagnosed about 10 years ago with prostate cancer; luckily, he was diagnosed in the early stages and is doing well today. Again, I wish you well and Godspeed. A true fan and also a friend ~ George W. Nash
Hello Mr. & Mrs. Fogelberg! Pam and I are praying for you! The Good Lord will assist in bringing your healing to a completion! Thanks for the years of inspiring music! ~ Pastor Don And Pam DeVlieger Jr.
There is an Eden and heavenly gates, And we're gonna make it there one day. Yet most of the answers you seek can be found, In dreams that He gives along the way.. Blessings to you Daniel. In Christ ~ Leigh Ann
Dear Dan, I continue to pray for you, that God will cure you completely, for: 1.Your health; 2. His glory; 3.(selfishly) My love of your music. Our savior Jesus Christ never promised us an easy life, only that He'd give us the strength to face what ever trials it might bring. I pray that you will know Him, His healing touch, and the peace & comfort of His presence. Just One More Fan ~ Dave
Dan - I am so deeply grateful for your progress and wish you a breakthrough year in 2006 - every time I think of any one of the wonderful 15 live performances I have experienced with you over the years, I simply smile and wish you the very very best in life, love and health! Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. You have given us so much! BTW - I would LOVE to see number 16 some time - but take care of yourself most of all. ~ Bud Patterson, Chicago, IL
Dan: I am 45 and I was diagnosed on 06\12\05 of having cancer. I had the surgery. I found myself in a dark place. After hearing Nether Lands it was not so dark on the road to recovery. I hope your recovery is going well. And again hang in there and thanks.
Dan, I first visited your website in the spring of 2005. When I read about your illness I was indeed saddened. Although I do not know you personally, your music has presented to me a person who I can call "friend." As a musician and singer (mostly for hobby's sake, these days), I understand your need to reveal yourself in your music. Your willingness and ability to use your heart as a musical compass is the reason that fans like me feel close to you. I am glad to read that you are doing better these days. At the same time, I am sad to read that you need time away from the stage and studio. My sadness exists for selfish reasons; I will miss looking forward to new music from you. But I am grateful for the music that you have created. Your songs have played an important part in creating the scenery and rounding-out the characters in my own passion play. For all of these things I thank you. Stay strong and be well, Dan Fogelberg. If you ever do return to the stage or realize that you cannot help yourself but to create more music (I know musicians. I think you will be back!), I will be out here cheering you on. Blessings ~ Steven D'Anna
Dear Dan: As a mother of a son who was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer when he was only 33, I want to thank you for making so many people aware of the necessity of the PSA test....My son is now 36 and because of wonderful doctors is undergoing a mini-bone marrow transplant to see if a new immune system might fight his cancer...He has two little girls, 4 and 6 and they continue to hope their daddy will beat this disease...Thank you for all you have done to expedite research and raise awareness. Our family wishes you a long and healthy life.~ The DuBois'...in Oregon
Dear Dan, I hope all continues to be well with you. I am wishing you and your wife a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. You will continue to be in my prayers. A loyal Fan ~ Lorraine
You have always been "The Leader of The Band". I wish you a full recovery, and eternal wellness. Thank you for sharing some of the most private sides of your life over the years through your incredible music. Peace. Mike...Carson City, NV.
Merry Christmas Dan and family! I hope and pray that you are doing well. I love listening to your beautiful Christmas CD. Thank you so much for your beautiful music and for sharing it with the world! God has blessed you well my friend! Keep the love in your heart and let the music continue to flow through you. You're the best! ~ Scarlet from K.C. Mo.
So glad to know things are going well. I have my yearly exam to just make sure. I hope you return to the stage one day. Your music sustained me through a trying marriage and the ultimate dissolving of that union. Your music is so full of love, hope and some despair. In short, life. My wife Sydnie knows well my love of your music and my desire for her to see you on stage. Her breath gave me new life. I serenaded her with your music, by cd and guitar and feel like it gave me the edge to win her over. Be well, and may our Creator bring you nothing but joy and good fortune. May your path be straight and pure. ~ REJ, Tulsa, Oklahoma
Hello Dan - Many years ago, when I was a student at Belmont University in Nashville, TN I met a great guy (Herb Pederson) who invited me to a session in which he was singing back up. He said he thought it might be interesting for me since I was studying Music Business at Belmont. He did not tell me whose session he was singing on, but I was so excited to be invited. So I met him later that week at The Bennett House Studio in Franklin, TN. When he walked me in I could not believe my eyes, there sat Dave Loggins and Tracy Nelson who were also singing back up on the session. I thought that was about as great as life could get. Then Herb said, come on over to the console and let me introduce you to someone. And as we stood at the console the guy in the main engineer's chair turned swung around and said "Hi - I'm Dan, it's great to meet you." I was totally in shock that I was at your session. You invited me and Herb into the kitchen and we drank champagne. And for the next 4-5 hours I sat and listened to some of the most incredible music and the best harmonies I've ever heard! It was such a thrill and such an honor to listen to you all sing. It was by far one of the highlights of my college days, and my life for that matter. And I just wanted to thank you for being so welcoming, and for allowing me to hang around with you all that evening and have that great experience. I wish you and your family all the best. My prayers will be with you for continued recovery and peace. God bless ~ Kathy Mountcastle-Gilbert, Carrollton, Texas
Dear Dan, Many rosaries have been said for your improved health. Thank you for decades of inspiration. I purchased your first album with my long saved allowance at age 12. I have a dance studio in Middle TN. and one of your songs graces the stage annually.(Last year it was "Reach Haven Post Card.") Thanks for composing a perfect piece of music for my craft! I will make my husband a doctors apt. for the PSA and PCa tests tomorrow. All my best and many prayers to you and Jean. ~ Miss Elise
Dan, I am so happy that you have turned a corner. My thoughts have been with you often over these last months. Thank you for being there for me in your music all these years. May you and your family have a peaceful, joyful and loving holiday season. As the new year unfolds may your spirit continue to shine. Always, you will be a part of me. ~ Maralee Davis
Dear Dan.. I am very grateful that your prostate treatment is going well. I just wanted to let you know that I am a Naturopath and can offer information to you about alternative medicine. My Dad had prostate cancer and the work I did with him was instrumental to his healing. I am also a Singer songwriter and your music was instrumental to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for you incredible gift. Would love to give some back to you if I can. Happy Healing. Much Love and a Big Hug.. ~Cyndy DiBeneditto
Dan, First of all, let me thank you for your music and the many great memories that it has given me. I recently viewed and thoroughly enjoyed your concert on PBS, and discovered a newfound love for your music. You have such an awesome talent and you pour your heart and soul into your music. I am saddened to hear of your battle with cancer, but I know that you can overcome it. You have a loving wife by your side, and I sincerely hope that you also have Christ with you as well because through Him all things are possible! May God bless you and your family, Merry Christmas, and again, thank you for the wonderful gift of music that you have given the world! ~ Gary Burcalow, Mesquite, Texas
Dan - I am a 44-year-old singer/songwriter, and you have been a HUGE influence on my songwriting style. "Beggar's Game" is one of the best songs ever written. My prayers are with you and your wife as you continually get better and triumph over this disease. You're still young, and I look forward to seeing and/or hearing more from you in the future. You have always been on my list of people I would love the chance to write a song with.
Peace, love and prayers ~ Rhonda Bennett
Dan, I have been your best fan since the early 70's. Can't count the times I have had my headphones on and was belting out "The Reach" when a neighbor had to come over and tell me I was disturbing the rest of the world. Can't imagine you not at least writing music with your talent, maybe you are but just don't want the stuff that comes with it. Your music has gotten me through some real rough times. I have been fortunate to have seen you twice, once in Orange County and once in LA. I wish you well and hope that I can hear something more from you before I check out of here in the next 80 years. :) ~ Nathaniel
Dan; It has taken me a while to put this into words, for this is my 1st and only fan letter. I can think of no other artist I would make this kind of effort to contact. While I am "in the biz", support for your music has had to come from personal preference. While you were rock n roll, I was deep into country, "High Country Snows" just never made commercial country radio. I have owned every one of your albums, and then replaced them with CDs. And as Jimmy Buffet says in one of his songs, "I hang on every line." I can boast that the one and only concert I ever bought tickets for was one of yours! Dallas, Starplex, late ?80s in support of the Wild Places. Even now I'm a talk radio host with political leanings that would most likely disturb you! (But I bet we'd have a great conversation, and still remain friends)
Point is, sir, your music transcends all that! Now I read from your own letter that you have no plans to return to performing or the studio and that disturbs me. I am so sorry for your illness, a fear certainly all men (in our age range) can relate to. Please, please, please do not let that sideline your talent. As a wanna be musician myself, I can only imagine how you work your craft. Your lyrics and music; how they work together to produce such emotion and passion must be a gift from "on high." My one note will most likely not change your intentions, but I am sure it will be added to thousands more that request your return. For all the pleasure you have brought me thru your music, if I might ever be of assistance please feel free?.. ~ Robert Hallmark, News Talk 550 KCRS, Midland/Odessa, Texas
Dan, It's early December and like clockwork, the time pressures of year-end and the holidays are beginning. Last night I sought to escape the world and watched a DVD I just bought - your "Greetings From The West" concert. I watched it all the way through and felt so uplifted. It evoked many happy memories of concerts I was lucky enough to attend. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this wonderful addition to the collection of "Dan" music my husband and I treasure. I learned of your prostate cancer last year when my sisters told me what my birthday present was supposed to be - tickets to see you in concert the fall of 2004. Since then, whenever I heard one of your songs, I would wonder how your treatment was going and if your fans would hear some good news about you. When I read the update letter you published last August, it brought a smile to my face. Your music has been with me through life's journey and I pray that your best work is yet to come
Dear Dan, it's just a simple wish....may you and your wife have a healthy and happy holiday season.and a very sincere thank you for all of the memories your songs have supplied. Your songs were the soundtrack of my youth. I will be 40 in 10 days. I hope 2006 finds you healthy and happy.... Always a fan ~ Geneen Gabbard, Tehachapi, Ca
You made my high school years bearable with your beautiful music. I loved you then and I still do. As an RN I also appreciate your willingness to educate people. God bless you and your family. ~ Susan Collins
Dan, Best wishes to you and your wife in the new year! Great to hear that you have turned a corner. Much love. ~ Nancy Adams
I must have been 16 or 17 at Beverly High when my boyfriend, whose father was Irv Azoff's doctor, got me tickets for your concert in Anaheim, the first of many I would be lucky enough to attend through the years. The only other person whose music has touched my life as profoundly, everlastingly, and meaningfully as yours is Bruce Springsteen, and when I heard recently that you were battling this disease all I could think of is, why did I wait this long to thank you? I used to hitchhike a lot in high school (it was actually safe then!) and I took your tapes with me every time and forced every person who gave me a ride to listen to you. Yours is truly a gift from God, and I'm sure he or whatever higher power looks over is is helping you now, for how could anyone conceive of robbing all of us of you and your gift? My heart is with you and your family and friends, that you beat this completely and share many more years of your magical music with all of us who love you. With all best wishes ~ Sandra
Dan, I am so glad to hear the great news on your progress!! My Dad has lung cancer, and has been doing great for years. I know the effect it can have on one's life, and I am sure you and Jean are thrilled. Your fans sure are. I learned how to play the guitar by listening to your albums when I was 16 back in '76, and have sang your songs many many times in my life at weddings, parties, etc., and still play them. I cannot begin to tell you what influence you have had on me not only with my own music, but my life as well. Thank you for giving us so much over the years, and when you kick this cancer, we sure hope that you will light up the studio again. Our prayers are with you. I hope you, Jean, and your family have a wonderful holiday season. God bless ~ Bobby Williams S.C.
I have loved your music for many years, having been introduced to it when I was in college by a dear friend of mine (okay, I'm 47 now!). Thank you. I am glad beyond words that you are doing better in your fight with prostate cancer. My thoughts are with you. ~ Cheryl K. Rice
Wow! I was blown away when I read this about you Dan. Your music has been such inspiration to me over the years, let's say about 30 plus. I pray and hope you are doing better and you can celebrate the holidays in grand style! Best Wishes and please take care. Love from Louisville ~ Connie
Dear Dan, You have meant so much to all of us and I am glad to hear you are doing well. Saw you at Bass Hall in Fort Worth a couple of years ago, and on Soundstage the other night, you are as great as in 1975, when we would listen to you in our dorm rooms! You are still cute too! My daughter (21) is learning the guitar and singing, and I am turning her onto your great songwriting and gorgeous voice. She'll be singing your pretty songs any day now. All the best to you now and always, and thank you for bringing so much joy to our lives. Take care of yourself ~ Lezlie
Dan, your songs have been an inspiration and a source of positive energy for all these years. For myself and my family, we want to send back some of those vibes and wish you all the best. We pray that we will see you again in concert sharing your love of life with the world. Get well Dan Fogelberg. The world needs your song. ~ Scott
Whoa... I just read your news on your web site. I had no idea that you were struggling through cancer. My grandfather had that same kind and lived for many years with it. He was 84 when he died of natural causes so just know... it is treatable and beatable. My prayers are that you are comforted with the Holy Spirit as you face this each day, that you are protected with His shield of faith and that His armor will bounce off any attack that you endure.
A few years ago I went to a concert at Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs Kansas. It was the last time I got to see you singing even though I had seen you numerous concerts. I finally had drawn a picture of my favorite artist (YOU!) and sent it backstage. I never knew if you got it or not. I had hoped that you did. My sister Lana listened to your music in the 70's...and I was hooked in high school. I entered college owning all albums to date...and wearing them out:) We continued to live through your music with the realness of life... the ups and downs...joys and sorrows. At one time I had nine albums, great condition despite hearing them 1,000s of times, and a friend of mine was helping me move and threw my albums in a box away. I could not believe it. After much crying, I started replacing them with cassettes...then CDs. I still do not have them all...but it is a lot better than my first 8 track versions:) Just know this...in the Bible there is no such thing as retirement...sooooo... I am looking forward to more digitally mastered tracks of your life through music and artwork. Just know that God placed you here on earth for our edification... as well as us with you...and each moment in the future when I
think of you I shall ask the Lord to sustain you and empower you with His love so that you will be inspired to sing and play for us. Your life has always reminded me of Psalm 27... May God continue to bless you... as you have blessed us... ~ Bab Poston - Independence Missouri
Hello Dan, as a fledgling singer/songwriter I was given an album entitled "Home Free" and it opened a door to my future. Your insights and musicianship as well as your courage to play and sing all the parts was both inspirational AND instructional. Years later, after a move to Nashville, I attended your impromptu performance at the Bluebird Cafe while you were recording "High Country Snows" and later attended the tour performance with my friend, Kenny Buttrey. At this show I was allowed to witness an intimate meeting of old friends backstage. How special these moments are to me. I sincerely hope your recovery is swift and complete. I commend you for your openness and the "preaching" in order to educate and potentially save lives. You mean so much to so many people, I imagine you almost can feel the healing power of all that good will aimed toward you. Thank you for all you have given... be well... all the best... ~ Paul Bobal
Hi, Dan! Thanks for the August update; I'm so glad you're doing well! I had breast cancer in 1999, and I was (and am) so blessed to have so much love and care expressed on my behalf. Thanks for your music all these years! I'm finally getting to pick my guitar back up after not playing much for the past 16 years (as a single parent, something had to give). My fingers are still clumsy, but I'm enjoying it a lot. I was never a performer (don't want the attention), but music has always been my safe haven. Take care and Godspeed! ~ KP
I am glad you're making a recovery. Enjoy the holiday season with your loved ones and know there are many people would wish you good health and great happiness. Thank you for allowing us to share your talent, and enjoy your music. ~ Kurt
Wow!!! I must be underneath a rock!! I surely didn't realize that you were fighting a battle!! Cancer is tough...but you are much tougher than that!! When you were in Rochester, New York years ago for a wonderful concert, I brought my mom to see you. She was, at the time, battling lung cancer, and also cancer at the base of her spine. She wanted to bring flowers for you, and so we stopped and got them. It took us over an hour to get into the venue and almost an hour and a half to walk back out....but she did it. I cannot begin to tell you what a difference you and your music made in her life and her struggle against cancer. You came out that evening singing the song "Magic Every Moment" and as my eyes traveled between watching you sing and watching my mother cry, I realized that you are a definite gift from God!! We were so blessed to hear you that night, and it was most certainly the best night of my life!! Although I lost my mother to the battle that she was waging against cancer, it is your music that took her through her journey. Please know that all of my prayers, along with (I'm sure) the prayers of my deceased mother will be with you while you are getting better. I know that I have enjoyed your music and it brings me to a peaceful time every time I listen to it. Thank you for that!! Best of luck in all that you do -- and know that you have made a world of difference to many more people than you will EVER know!!
Your music has been with me for many years and am always thrilled when you have something new come out-your last "new" album (opps, now you know how long I really have listened to you!!) CD came out a couple of Christmas's ago--I was once again not disappointed!! It was, and still continues to be my best Christmas gift to family and friends! Just now have found this website for you, have thought about you and your family as to how you have been doing with your cancer-and didn't hear a lot. Nice to find out things are going better for you, and you keep having a positive attitude! With this season, as with all the seasons, hope this one brings you peace and joy. Thank you for the many hours you have given to me with your music, you truly have a gift--thanks for sharing!!!! My best to you and yours--Sincerely ~ Jane from SD
Dear Dan, While channel surfing on Friday evening, I happened upon an abbreviated version of your Soundstage concert on our local PBS station. I could not believe my luck and fortune! Bye-bye "Iron Chef" and hello Dan! I've seen you in concert several times over the years, but never on television. It sure beat the seats I had one time at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas. (We were about as far back from the stage as you could get). Since the summer of 1977 (when I first was introduced to you via your concert at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas), you and your music have personally affected my life in far too many ways to detail. I still own a T-shirt from that concert. (I think I paid a whopping $5.00 for it). You helped a highly emotional, over thinker get through some pseudo-rough times in her 20s and 30s. What should I do, where should I go? Who am I? I've never really found the answer to all those questions, but other more urgent things intervened such as growing babies and ailing parents. Who knew that those were the good old days, huh? Mostly, I want to add my name to the lengthy list of fans who express similar sentiments on a regular basis, so that you will continue to hear that your life, your work...mattered. Thank you for the music. Thank you for the concerts. I wish you and your wife good health and happiness in 2006 and beyond. ~ Suzanne Han
I have been a fan since I was in high school. I have seen you numerous times in concert and your music has meant a lot to me in my life. I read your letter recently and was glad to hear that you are doing better. It is my hope and my prayer that you will continue making music for us for many years to come. May God bless you! ~ L.F
Best wishes Dan ... and thanks for the music. ~ Stephen
Dan, Your music has carried me through many trials in my life and I sincerely hope that our wishes and prayers can, in some way, help you and yours through this trial. My thanks for your special songs through the years. May God be with you ~ Wayne
Hi Dan, I am just beginning my battle with prostate cancer at age 55, but am somewhat optimistic about having surgery as soon as possible. I started reading your web site after hearing about your recovery. My thoughts are with you as I learn more about this. Warm Regards ~ Cliff Williams
Hello, I have been a fan of yours forever, and have been to every concert you have done in Dallas. I just recently have finished chemo from an aggressive breast cancer in both breasts. I agree, this has been illuminating, and I have seen many blessings. I am glad to be out of the chemo fog and surviving! Hang in there. My prayers are with you.~ Melanie McDonald
Dan, I just wanted to wish you the best. I was glad to hear of your good news recently. Even though I don't know *you*, I have experienced your music for many years; it has been grand. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all you have done; hearing such heart-felt, well-done lyrics and music is transcendent, at least for me. I hope you one day again "get the bug" and head back into the studio...for my selfish reasons. I too have hiked in the San Juans and about my favorite place in the world (at least in summer) is American Basin, or part way up the side of Handies Peak. The way you tie your lyrics and the feeling of the lyrics into the music is inspiring. Thanks for all the music (and concerts!) and I pray you continue to have good news. Peace ~ Paul Ruths, Woodland Park
Dan, I am listening to your KERA concert right now, your brings back so many memories. Thanks for sharing your wonderful music! ~ Toni
Dan: I'm at a loss for words and feel so humble as the lyrics to your music has brought me such hope and inspiration since your first album Home Free. I am 51 years old and have been an avid fan since the 70's. Buying all your albums, then when they weren't available replacing them with all your cassettes, then all the CD's. I have seen you in concert from Cleveland to Houston to the Bay Area. You have been an inspiration and saving grace for me through your music and I pray and wish for you a miraculous recovery and hope you realize how deeply your words and lyrics have embraced and became a part of not only me.....but of all of those who hear your magic. God Bless You, I don't know you personally but I love you ~ Susan
Dan, Your music carried me through the best of times in my life. And when there were times that weren't 'the best', hearing your music would actually put me into a conscious shift, as it still does, remembering and feeling all that was and is...grand. We were all meant to be here, in this life, at this time. I'm grateful that we are on that same journey as One. Blessings ~ Gail
Dear Dan: I only recently heard about your website, and visited it for the first time today. The montage of music brought back instant memories. I had a crush on you as a young teenage girl, now I am a happily married wife and mother of two incredible children. Your music has seen me through most of the stages of my life, and now even my children know you and have even been to a couple of your concerts with us. It is an amazing thing to see how lives are woven together, even if those people have never actually met face to face. I know you know you and your family are prayed over by many, many people whom you have never even met. What an awesome thing to have touched so many lives. May our Lord Jesus Christ uphold you, heal you and bring you to a new understanding of who He is and how much He loves you. May you find His strength and joy. Maybe one day we WILL meet..... Bless you and yours. ~ Lori Mora & Family
Dear Dan, I'm so glad to hear you are doing well. I'm also a cancer survivor of 2 years now. Your music has touched my heart since I first heard "Nether Lands" back in 1977. You have a great and unique talent. Tthanks for all your beautiful lyrics and melodies. I wish you and your family all the best. Sincerely ~ Sherri Shields
God bless you and your family, Dan. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. Stay positive about things. Although it's not always easy to do, keeping a positive outlook is extremely beneficial. My brother has just recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor and had to undergo emergency surgery. He is now undergoing chemo and radiation. He has always been one of your biggest fans, and I know he has every album. Growing up, yours was the only music I ever heard coming out of his room. Best wishes and God bless. ~ TC
Dear Dan, I have been a fan ever since your Souvenirs album came out. WOW! when you won the Grammy it was the best. You are why I still hack on the guitar and lead a praise and worship band at my church. Sometimes I'll go off into a " Part of the Plan" at practice, and the young ones in the band will say "man where did that come from"? Dan my prayer group is with you. Our Father will take care of you and your family. Know this...you are loved, and have touched many lives. You will always be blessed brother. Thank you Dan Fogelberg. Peace In Him Always ~ Rick Volz
I only recently learned of your battle with cancer. My prayers are with you and your family. Your music has been a favorite for decades now and is usually to be found in my car CD player. My husband died last year from colon cancer so I can understand what you and your family are facing. Thanks for telling folks how important it is to be checked for cancer AND how easy and painless the tests. Positive thoughts will be coming your way from the small state of Delaware. ~ Fan from the Small Wonder State
Your music has always brought light into my life when I hear it - I hope the light of life shines brightly for you and your family. My sister has been fighting bravely her cancer for the last 18 months and she is the light of my life - I will pray for both of you. Jai beguine. Peace and love ~Grace Tracy, NYC
Mr Fogelberg - I'd like to call you Dan, but my good catholic upbringing doesn't allow me to be that informal to someone I don't know personally!!! I'm sure you are aware that your average Australian doesn't know who Dan Fogelberg is and hence the opportunity to see you perform your most beautiful music was only ever going to happen if I happen to be in the US & you were playing. I've always kept irregular checks on your site for possible tour dates that might tie up with my occasional overseas trip but unfortunately nothing ever worked out. More recently I was looking on your site and was saddened to read of your recent battle with cancer. I had to write to tell you what a great talent you are, what a brilliant writer , what a great musician. You've probably heard it a million times, but like all those other people, your music has always touched that soft spot that most of us males try not to open up. Your music; your stories of your life; your time as a child; your loves; your politics; of happiness & grief -- they are all so special. I just hope that for each person you have touched, that their thoughts & prayers are with you -- that the collective force of what you have done for so many is returned to you tenfold in your time of need. I hope that all that positive energy finds its way to you and helps you kick this disease. Good luck Dan. I truly wish you all the best. The world, in particular the US, needs people of your conviction & integrity. Regards ~ Phil Bishop
Dear Dan, I have thought of your name many times over the past 3 weeks. I often meant to look up your website, and tonight while traveling on business in Tampa (I live in the Dallas area), I remembered to do it. You see, I have tried to WRAP myself in business lately because about 3 weeks ago after my second prostate biopsy in a year , I heard those 4 words --- " You have prostate cancer." I am 48 years old, and was floored at the news I received, and remember hearing of your condition some time back. I spend hour upon hour researching my options, and reviewing data. Too bad, as it has cut into my music life a bit --- I know you GET that!
I own about 20 guitars (all makes, vintages, and models), a drum set, a Roland FP-8 and lots of horns (forgot how to play most of them) and percussion, and a great stereo system. I love to play your music, I wish I could re-create a fraction of the beautiful music that you create. I own every album you ever produced, a few reel to reel tapes of your music, cassette tapes, and yes, some CDs as well. I know you will again someday be in the recording studio or on a large stage again ---- because you have THE POWER OF GOLD! I wish I could tell you my favorite song that you have performed but I can't. I LOVE ALL OF THEM! I wish you all the love that God's speed will allow! You are an Icon of Stewardship of the way to love and live. I look forward to more beautiful music from you for many years to come! My highest and sincere regards ~ Rick
Dan, Thanks to your letter, I had a physical with my doctor, and made sure he did the PSA test and a DRE. Thankfully, no problems were found. But I owe you great thanks for getting me off my rear (no pun intended). Thank you for all you do! ~ Dave Clark
Dan, I have enjoyed your work for many years. I am thrilled to know that you have made some progress. God bless you, and I hope you have continued success against the cancer. ~ Dan Meyer
To my favorite artist of all time, I wrote yesterday to wish you the best and admit how selfish we all are for wanting you back..... Ah, you just don't know! Now that the holidays are coming up I have been listening to your beautifully unique Christmas album (CD) and as usual brought to tears by the beautiful songs you wrote and somehow found buried who knows where. I told you my sister took her life not so long ago and Christmas was her favorite time of year. I went there every year, but now I have no place to go and find I do NOT want to "do" Christmas anymore. All I WILL do is listen to you, it gives me comfort to listen to your music, and it is enough. The rest of my family does okay with the holidays. I'm alone here in Florida, they are all in Wisconsin and have children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and even a few great grandchildren. Here, it's just me and I honestly don't mind being alone. I feel I have you to keep me going, your music to soothe my soul, and that's all I need. Thank you SO MUCH for your gift of putting poetry to music. You have meant the world to me. It's kind of a heavy load to bear along with all that's going on in your life these days, but I hope you don't mind too much easing the pain of a lost soul who has lost so much. Bless you ~ Jennifer from Tampa
Dan, Still listening to you after all these years and hoping you come back to town. We are also praying for your continued successful battle against cancer. Have a wonderful holiday!! ~ Doug in Peoria
Dan--Prayers and positive thoughts for your continued recovery. As a former Illinoisan, my peers and I found your song themes close and tangible to our life experiences .("Wow, this guy is from Peoria??!!!" was often uttered after a song was played) For many of us music aficionados, you demonstrated that hard work and perseverance can carry you far in life, whatever your path or vocation. Relationships with significant others and fathers, the magic of Nature, peace and social justice, self determination, and so forth. You covered all the bases with your music. I found true relevance in your music during the 70's and early 80's, and I still find that same relevance today after all these years. You have touched many with your God-given talent in special and enduring ways. Best wishes for your health and thanks for the memories. ~ Stu McN
Mr. Fogelberg my name is Jed Berg. I am a 16 year old boy in Wisconsin and I am a big fan of your music. I love your earlier music! I am glad to hear your health is improving.
Dan, We have enjoyed your Christmas CD. Thank you for bringing the true meaning of Christmas into our home. I have four children ages 13 down to 8. With all of the negative influences in the world, it's nice to have some uplifting music we can listen to that really means something. Your Greatest Hits album has got me through many a day of house cleaning. We wish you the best and are glad to hear you are recovering. ~ Charlotte Stewart - Arizona
Merry Christmas Mr. Fogelberg! I hope that you and your family have the Merriest Christmas and a terrific New Year! My thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you for sharing your God given talents and gifts with the world. I feel honored to listen to your marvelous work. Keep your eyes and heart focused in the right direction. A devoted fan ~ .Scarlet from K.C. Mo.
Dear Dan & Jean, At this special time of year I want to wish you both a Blessed Christmas and a Joyous 2006 filled with good health (that is our wish to you) and all of your dreams coming true. ~ Linda & Jo Flasch - Palos Hills, Ill.
Musician, muse, philosopher.....heal thyself! The world can wait as you take care of yourself and your family. Best wishes in 2006. ~ Jerry Davis
Hi Dan, I was very relieved to hear that your treatment has been successful so far. I couldn't believe when I read about your illness last year. You have helped me through some pretty bad times over the years with your music, and I know I am not alone in that. I now live in the UK and so don't get to hear much of your music on the radio (but they do play Longer!!), but your CDs are regularly played. I really miss seeing you in concert and was thinking of combining a trip over to the states with one of your concerts, that's how I heard about your cancer. My heartfelt best wishes and prayers go to you and your family. I hope that your Christmas is a happy and peaceful one and that you continue to improve. Glad to hear you are keeping your options open regarding your music. Take care ~ Luv, Sandy R.
Dan, I have been a fan of yours since your Innocent Age album. In fact, when it was a 2AM feeding for my younger daughter, I would put that album on and she and I would listen to it. I have been fortunate to see you in concert three times. Many of my family members are fans. My prayers are with you and your family. ~ Becky H
Dan, Just wanted you to know you are still in my prayers. I just heard about Michael Botts and his passing with Colon Cancer. May the lord bless you with a full recovery and back to writing, performing, and recording soon. ~ Lance near the San Juan Islands-Washington
Mr. Fogelberg: Even as small as the world has become thru all of the media and Internet I just read today about your cancer. I was very relieved to hear that things are going well and I hope this trend continues. I have never written a celebrity before but in this case I felt it was warranted. I have truly enjoyed your craft for many many years and two of your songs are truthfully in my top 5 of all time. You have touched many and although you are known as a person by just a handful of people those of us here on the outside feel almost as if we know you also, and believe you would be a really good friend. My son is 4 and already shows much musical talent and I can promise you he will be taught many of your songs as he progresses. Again thank you and best of luck. Merry Christmas ~ Tony Allen (a fan in NC)
Dan, I've always been a big fan of your songwriting and your performances of those great songs. I just read about the passing of Mike Botts (My condolences on the loss of your friend) and it got me to wondering how you are doing. I hope you are doing well. I admire your efforts to educate others about prostate cancer. I am only 33 but will be taking your advice and getting these tests performed yearly as I get closer to 40. Hope you're feeling well and I hope we all hear good news from you soon. ~ Lance Yeager - Louisville, KY
Hi, God bless you Dan. You have been a favorite since 1978 when my parents and brothers and I moved to Blackhawk Colorado. You have been wonderful to listen to all these years with your beautiful music and soothing voice. I will pray for you and your family to be strong, and, don't give up the fight. ~ Sandra Bartkowiak
Hey Dan, I hope you are getting along well! Life it so very short, I wish more people realized that. You have truly brought me thru many trials in my life, don't you feel like you're always being tested! No matter what you have given. I have only given myself, yet you have given so much more! Be strong, hang on as long as you can, enjoy the little things in life, such as the stars that shine at nite, the wind blowing in your hair, the beauty in the smiles that you see around you. I feel for you and your family, be strong and hang on fight for life here on earth!!!! Lots of love ~ Joy
I am so thankful that 2005 is ending with your health considerably improved over what it was the at end of 2004. My New Years wish is for you to be well and happy. My second wish is that your creative juices will start to flow again. That may be selfish, but I really miss new Fogelberg songs and concerts. Take care of yourself and I wish you and your family a wonderful 2006. ~ Linda B.
Just wanted to wish Dan, Jean and their families a very Merry Christmas and a happy, Healthy New Year! I am the webmaster for the BillBixbyOnline.com website and we have a section devoted to information about prostate cancer. Everybody please take care and get those annual exams!!! Thank you for all the great music, Dan, and I'm sending my thoughts and good wishes your way. All the best ~ Cathy
Dan - When I was very young, my older brother had concert tickets to see The Eagles. His friend became ill and my brother was burdened with dragging his bratty younger sister to the concert with him. I remember it like yesterday, he and his friends were all so excited for the Eagles to play and while you were singing the songs of Home Free I began a life-long love affair with you (or your music anyway). I was around 10. Now I am very saddened to hear you are having a tough time and you need to know that you have brought fans all over the world so much love that your efforts will be recognized. You are our Captured Angel. None of your devoted fans are willing to let you go. Chin up, head high and SING! ~ Donna
Dear Mr. Fogelberg, My husband and I were so distraught to learn of your prostate cancer. We of course send all our prayers and good wishes to you and your family. I would like to tell you how much your music has meant to us over the years. We've worn out so many CDs and records just listening and enjoying your unique sense of timing and words. You must realize that your lyrics are second to none. They are so unusual and insightful and we never tire of hearing them.Thank you again for all that you've brought to our lives and we hope to hear more songs from your heart before we all leave this earthly home. Fondly ~ Marianne Lowitz
Dan: May God Bless You with good health in the coming year! I shared in your music as a fan for most of your career in Chicago, Detroit, and South Bend, as I moved from place to place. You have been an inspiration to so many. While in college I chalked a portrait from Captured Angel of you, which was left at the Detroit Fox Theatre via the management for you. Through life's twists and turns you were there with your sweet songs. "Longer" became a part of my wedding day and I am sure thousands have played it along the way. Last year, I joined the American Cancer Society and my team raised thousands of dollars for Relay for Life in Kentucky. This year, I will Captain a team of my own not only to honor you, but to honor my family (one a survivor and one has passed on). I thank the Lord for your great Gift of Music and I will pray for your complete remission and recovery. ~ Susan in Bowling Green, KY
Dear Dan, I am a longtime loyal fan & first posted a message at this site last month immediately after I heard of your illness. After I posted the message and read some of the others, I sat & cried because I know how much you mean to so many people, and I also know first-hand how cancer shakes you to your very core--physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I am happy and hopeful with the news you reported that your treatments have been successful thus far. You are such a beautiful soul--you were given a special gift and you knew early on that you wanted to share it with the rest of us! I have often mentioned you in my prayers over the years, long before you were ill, thanking God for you and your music. You, Jean, and the rest of your family remain in my prayers now as you are coping with so much. We don't always express the things we feel for others when we have the opportunity, so while I have this chance I want to say that I love you and I wish you a very Merry Christmas, and a New Year that is filled with health, happiness, and hope. God Bless You Dan. Sincerely ~ Rose Pargiter, Knoxville TN
I just learned of your battle. I just wanted to tell you to hang in there and remember Jesus saves. Know that GOD is in complete control at all times and hears all prayers (even when we don't think He's listening) If you have not already, please read the book of Romans. GOD bless and thanks for all of the great music! ~ larry w.
Dear Dan, I have been a huge fan of yours for 30 plus years. And as I got on the internet, I just read that you are battling prostate cancer. I wanted to write a note to you to say that you will be in my prayers and to ask God to allow you to gain strength through these messages of good will. God Bless you and Jean. My most favorite song is "Same Old Lang Syne." It reminds me of loves long ago. Actually, I just went to my 35th high school class reunion. It doesn't seem THAT long ago, because the memories shorten it to just last month, when I hear that song,. God Bless you. Sincerely ~ Dee Koons
Dan- My thoughts and my love are with you as you traverse this chasm and battle the illness. I have every faith in your inner strength and resolve to cross the distance with ease. Remember, you have a choice in your health. Tell the cancer to beat it! Believe it, and it is. Like so many others, I have listened to your music and have been inspired in so many ways as a result. As a musician and songwriter, I have become better at my craft thanks to your sweeping offerings. [I do hope you return to the stage, and when you do, I would be happy to play bass for you!] Thanks especially for "To the Morning." It continues to fill me with great joy. Be well. ~ Nader Ashway
Dan: I've listened to your voice through tears of sorrow and joy and many of the days of my life. Your voice was with me when I missed my husband-to-be when he was away. Your voice was there when we were reunited and it was there on our honeymoon. Your voice was there as we started our lives together. Your voice was there as we danced and played with our babies. Your voice was there when I had to search my soul or spend moments to think through life's problems. Your voice was there when my husband had cancer. It was there as I prayed. It was there when I rejoiced from the words remission. It continues to be there. To the Morning....Dan ... there is no way to say no to the morning....tomorrow will be there. I am so happy to hear that you are doing better! ~ Karen in IL
Hi Dan. I am just so very elated to hear this happy news regarding the cancer treatment. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Jean each and every day. The joy your music has brought to my life is more than I could ever express. I have been listening to your music well over 15 years now and every Christmas, I can't wait to pull out your Christmas CD! In fact, I love it so much, that I listen to it several times during the year. I pray that one day you will be back on stage singing and playing your wonderful music. I remember seeing you at the Houston Astrodome many years ago and your music was so magical that it changed my life forever! Live each day as if its your last!!! Sing, laugh, dance, and love!!! You and your family are in all of our prayers. ~ Lynn, Arizona
Dan, The First Christmas Morning continues to play in my office throughout the day..what a masterpiece! I continue to hold you up daily in prayer that full vigor and health would soon be yours. We all miss your singular God-given talents but wish for you most of all complete healing and grace and sustenance for your family. Merry Christmas my dear friend and may 2006 hold new and special Blessings for you and your family. Sincerely ~ Greg Tuttle, M.D. Chapel Hill, NC
Dan, I am about your age and just recently learned of your illness. I had a major prostate cancer scare a few years ago, but it turned out to be a false alarm -- and I have been telling men to get their tests ever since. Your music has inspired me for over 30 years, and "Leader of the Band" (with different details) still brings me to tears remembering my father whom I lost several years ago. My oldest son is now 13, just got his first guitar, and immediately asked me to teach him the chords to "Leader of the Band" , which he has heard me play many times. Please know that there are so many of us whose lives have been made bright by what you have done. Keep going -- ever on. ~ Phil Horton
Dan - I just wanted you to know you're in our prayers... My sisters and I saw you in Peoria a couple years ago. I've been listening most of my life. I have an interesting story to tell you that involves your song called "Forefathers", me (I live in Decatur, Illinois) and a friend I met from Scotland but I don't want to fill the page up with my rantings. I love that song though. The lyrics hit very close to home for both of us. May God bless you and keep you lways.Sincerely ~ Diane G.
Dear Dan Fogelberg ~ Someday, when someone goes through my music library, they will know that despite the various styles of music I enjoyed, you were definitely my favorite artist. And still to this day, "To the Morning" is still the most beautiful song you have ever done. Your wonderful Christmas CD is the first one I pop in the stereo at the holidays. During the 80's & 90's, I caught every concert you played from Pittsburgh to Cleveland to Toledo.
Seeing the little Q & A about you in the Sunday Parade several weeks ago prompted me to immediately find your web site. I was shocked, saddened and scared to learn about your battle with prostrate cancer. It struck me as hard as if the news had been about a close friend or relative and I prayed for you just the same. I thought it was about time I write to you too. Your voice and music has been the one constant in my life that has always been there for me in good times and bad. You sang me through all the ups and downs of this life God has given me and also gave me a social conscience. I want to thank you for that. I pray that your strength will be renewed and that the music will flow again. Your experience will certainly draw out more thoughts and words which you will want to share with the world. I'll be waiting! May God bless you and your family with a very Merry Christmas and bright hopes for the New Year! Your faithful, hopeful fan ~ Becky Wolf
Dan Fogelberg has touched many thru his lyrics, and more recently thru his battle with cancer. I regret never being able to see the man in concert, as he does have a small legion of fans in my country, Australia. His album "Nether Lands" was my first introduction to his remarkable songwriting and vocal talents - "False Faces" being a track that I could relate to at the time. Since then, I've collected most of his music - Windows and Walls being a favourite album, and "Tucson Arizona" perhaps the best bit of music I've ever heard. The Innocent Age album had "The Reach" - all of the tracks, especially that one, was inspirational. Many of Dan's songs are inspirational - like many people, music can reflect in certain stages of your life, and "Same Old Lang Syne" I think we can all relate to - directly or indirectly. Very emotive, and one of a very rare breed of singer/songwriter who can take you with him on his lyrical journeys. One day I will get that airline ticket and see Dan perform, my good wishes go to him and his kin, for improving health - I just wish I could pen a few lines to express how he has affected me since my discovery of his music many years ago . Dan - Your fans in Australia give thoughts and prayers for you and your family, and hope the inner strength shown throughout the years in your lyrics, that you've shared your inner soul to us, will shine that light at this time. ~ Andrew in Sydney, Australia.
Hello Dan, I love your music and have always listened to your records over the years. God bless you and I hope that you are doing much better. Sincerely ~ Patti Abele, Henderson, NV
I am a 24 year old (in order) mother, wife, student, and waitress. I am probably your youngest fan but maybe one of your most devout. In my life there isn't much room for myself. My motherhood and marriage sort of sprang up three years ago and proved to be the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am very busy with everything in my life. Most of my free time is spent studying at my kitchen table after my three year old little girl and husband have gone to bed. I guess what I am trying to say here is thank you. I grew up listening to your music as my parents are fans. I was introduced by them (my parents) but your music captured the deepest parts of my soul and I was carried away from there. There is a part of me, deep, deep inside that longs for some type of release. I don't really know how to explain it. There is a part of me that goes long beyond Microbiology (interesting as it is) and cooking supper, going to work and paying the mortgage. That part of me rests in a place where more of life is understood. It is a whimsical feeling of solitude and understanding. I'll have to admit that I don't really share that with anyone in my life. Your music is so important to me because it makes me feel some of my feelings from childhood.
No one around me even really knows who you are. I don't know anyone who feels the way I do. Your music feeds my soul. It is my escape and staircase to a higher plane. The worst thing is that I don't even know how to explain how I feel sometimes. Maybe I am just inarticulate but I just can't put it into words. The predominant words are SOUL, MOUNTAINS, TREES, ANCIENT. Those are just lingual fragments of feelings. I feel like you have an ancient soul and it comes out in your EARLIER music. I know that I am young but I feel small parts of a complementary soul. Even though this email might sound as if it comes from some crazy person, it comes from a victim of normal, dulling, conforming, every day society. I love my daughter and my life but sometimes I feel a little bit smushed. To sum it all up, thank you for defining my soul.(by soul I mean deeper thoughts and feelings, nothing religious)
I am very relieved to hear that your treatment has been successful. I am hopefully entering the dental hygiene program at Tennessee State University next fall and believe it or not (as nonrelated as it is )I have had lots of material in prerequisites about the prostate gland. I feel very confident that you will recover just fine and live the rest of your life gloriously. Continue the positive feelings about your condition. I feel that self help has a very positive effect on the outcome of events. I can't help but feel that my emails have been very selfish considering what you have been through. I just have tons to say and have never attempted to do so. My parents once took me to one of your concerts and my dream is to meet you at least once in my lifetime. Best of wishes to you and yours over the holiday ~ Leslie Veach
May God bless you and your family this holiday season - we are so happy to still have you with us and pray that within time you will be able to entertain us again through your music. Have a wonderful Christmas and here's to a full recovery in 2006! ~ Jodi Griffey
Hey Dan - I just heard about your PC issues. I was diagnosed this time last year. Had it out in April at age 54. There was a positive surgical margin, and the Gleason was 9 so they recommended rads and hormones which I am now on for three years, I guess. My PSA is now <0.02 which is good. The doc says I should be good for two years and then we will see. But right now 2 years looks very good considering the alternative. I had a fund-raiser with my band for Terry Fox Foundation and we raised $10,000 which was fun, but the best part was having all the support of my friends and family. This experience has certainly shown me who my friends REALLY are - so in some ways getting PC could be construed to be a wake-up call. My relationship with my family is better than ever as well. Maybe being shown the future isn't such a bad thing. Anyway - I haven't even mentioned I love your music and am planning to try to cover your "Same Old Lang Syne" song if I can just stretch my voice about an octave! Hang in and keep telling guys to get checked - I am doing the same thing. ~ Tim Godfrey, Oakville, ON, Canada
Dan, I write again from Colorado to wish you peace and a swift return to good health. The beauty of this place reminds me of every time I have seen you, heard you play and speak. I look forward to seeing you in person again. Have a wonderful Christmas!
I just recently heard of your battle with cancer, and wanted to thank you for your music! I have been listening to your music since the 70's, and have always said that if I could have just one cd, I would choose Nether Lands, that is how much I love it! I have gone thru all the things that we go thru in life, and you have been there every step of the way, to pick up my spirits, sympathize with me, fill my life with music. I lost my best friend this summer to cancer, and as always, I go back to the music that has meaning for me, as I deal with my grieving. I have learned that life can be taken away so quickly, and we need to live our lives being the best people we can be, and try to have no regrets. You are in my prayers, and just wanted you to know what a great influence you are! Thank you, and God bless you and your family. ~ Cyndi Heuer
My hope is that you and yours have a joyous holiday season wherever you may be, especially if in beautiful Colorado. All of your fans think of you often and look forward to the day when you are back on tour.
Wanted to send my best to you, hoping that you are getting stronger. I've been a fan forever - since Home Free with "To The Morning" and "Stars" and "Be On Your Way" - and of course Souvenirs with "Part of the Plan" and "Changing Horses," among those other wonderful songs. I "grew up" with you - born in 1952, I felt a kinship with your songs' words. You seemed to be feeling what I was feeling in the early 70s and later as well. I introduced you to so many of my friends. I couldn't seem to get enough of the music! I hear "Same Old Lang Syne" each day on a radio station that's playing Christmas music. It's the favorite song of my day. So - I hope you are feeling well now, Dan. Happy holidays to you, and peace to you and to your family. Thanks for such beautiful music. ~ Jean Farmer, Glen Allen, Virginia
Dear Dan and Jean, Our family was very upset and disturbed to find out about your illness. We hoped that things were going alright. I stumbled across this website and wanted to send you a brief note tellling you how much we were relieved to know you were doing well. Your music has always been played in our home, and I personally have grown up with it since the early 70's. I now can pass that on to my children. Every time we go on a road trip, it's tradition now to put in your cd's and we play them all the way to where we are going, and all the way back. It certainly has brought us closer as a family. So thank you, for your music and your spirit. Stay well and God bless you and yours. Sincerely ~ The Whittle's, South Carolina
I was just recently made aware of your diagnosis and your struggle during the past year and heard through a friend to check your website for updates. My husband and I will keep you and your family in our prayers as you continue your journey to recovery.
You and your music have played such an important part in my life. I became a fan when I was in high school and purchased your Souvenirs album. I turned others on to the beauty of your lyrics and guitar and several of us went to see you in concert as you toured back in the late 70's. You have always been my "fall and winter" guy -- your music reminds me of those particular times of the year. When I met my husband in 1986, I realized that I could indeed marry him when I found that he also owned most of your albums and could sing the lyrics to all of your songs! For his birthday one year -- I gave him tickets to see you in concert, as you FINALLY came to Richmond, Virginia! -- by then we had a 2-year-old and another baby on the way. Today, our 13-year-old and 11-year-old know and love your songs as well. We particularly love your Christmas CD which we keep in our CD player throughout the holidays ! I do hope you realize how much your music has touched people and continues to do so into the next generations! Best of luck to you in your recovery -- we will keep you in our prayers. God Bless ~ Brenda Humphreys
Daniel; Today, I'm surfing the internet and catching up with old friends...you were one of those friends, even though you didn't know it. Your music kept me company many nights in the 80s, and the sensitive side of your songs encouraged me feel like there was someone who really did understand how I felt. Twenty years later, I find out that you are fighting cancer. Now I want to take time to encourage you just by letting you know how much I have enjoyed your music over the years. I do not believe that God is finished with you Dan. You have more to do. God bless you and Jean. Sincerely ~ Dawn Vogel
Hi Dan, My sister is in from Dallas and I am still living in Illinois. We are sitting here listening to as many CD's that I have. Sorry to say most of your music is still on albums. Your music has touched both our hearts. In a way you will never know !!!! My heart was broken when my sister gave me the news that you have cancer. We are both encouraged to know that you are doing better. We are so connected with the "Leader of Band". Our Dad is the center of our strength and now he needs us. WE are here for him. You have been our inspiration for the last 30 years... ( do you feel old??) The power of prayer and laughter is amazing!! I know that you feel the love & prayers that are given to you every day! God and Jesus do heal! We wish you and your family a blessed holiday. ~ Love Kerri Klein (Wheaton, IL ) and Sherrin Whiteside (Grand Prairie,TX)
Hi Dan - I was devastated at your recent plight and am pulling for you I only wish I could see you one more time at Red Rocks - Front and Center as I was many years ago. Please take care of yourself and know my prayers and good wishes are with you and Jean. IF you decide to go back into the studio I would love to hear more of the High Country Snows type music....it IS your roots and I am listening to it right now!!! Love and ALWAYS your MOST devoted fan. ~ Deb
Hi Dan, I'm a huge fan of your great music, and I've only just learned now about your battle with prostate cancer. I am praying for your complete and speedy recovery so that you can continue to give the world more of your music for years to come. From a fan in the Philippines ~ Mike Da Silva
Dan, You have touched so many of us with the music that has moved our hearts and spirits. May we send positive vibrations your way in the form of prayer. Our son Chris was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 8..now he is a healthy 17 year old. BELIEVE!
Dan, I have promised myself for the last year or so to contact you regarding your Christmas CD release. I am always looking for something "out of the ordinary" and beyond the usual Christmas "standards". Your stylings on this CD were particularly original and innovative, even for some of the "standards". I am a collector of 33 1/3 vinyls and have over 500 in good-to-very-good condition. I don't think that I have "all" of your recordings, but it would be safe to say that you are well-represented in my collection! I was born about seven years before you were, and "came of age" during the folk period of the 60's and early 70's. I have always appreciated your easy style with music and lyrics and am looking forward to transferring your vinyls to CD for space-saving as well as longevity. I am so hopeful and prayerful that your condition and recovery will continue to improve. As an about-to-be-retired male nurse, I have seen first-hand the devastating toll that late-discovery PCa can have on an individual and/or a family. I've lost many of my favorite talents, such as Karen Carpenter, Cass Elliot, and John Denver, to name a few. I'd like to see you hang around for awhile. I am partially hearing impaired and would consider a complete hearing loss a tragedy, since I would no longer get to hear my music - everything from the classics to Harry Connick and Sting, and everything in-between. My heartfelt best wishes for your continued recovery. With hopes for a pleasant holiday season and a new year filled with bright promise. A dedicated fan ~ James Carter R.N.
Dear Dan, I recently popped your Phoenix cassette tape (yes cassette!) into my car stereo on the ride to work. For no particular reason I have not listened to your music in a while so I immediately thought to myself gee I wonder how Dan Fogelberg is doing as I recalled you were battling cancer. I was VERY pleased to read of your progress to date. Like most people, our family has gone through a loved one battling prostate cancer so I have a little insight into what you're going through. My wife and I have always greatly enjoyed listening to your music as it brings back a flood of great memories from our past. Very few artists music has this effect on fans in my opinion. You have a true gift! My best wishes for your continued recovery and (selfishly) for the resumption of your remarkable career. ~ Andy
Daniel, What can I say to someone who has touched me so deeply? 1975 this Oklahoma boy, lost, troubled, and seeking something I couldn't identify, was traveling down highway A1A in Miami, Fl (long story about why and unimportant) when I heard a breath of fresh air on my 1970 Pinto radio. Broadcast on WHSE Miami "Looking for a Lady" was like nothing I'd ever heard. My life was changed in a moment. Someone expressed my soul's thoughts and emotions better than I could myself. I've loved your music from that moment to today. You've helped me through very though times and you're music has been there at the truly great moments as well. I've listened to every record and I've seen you in concert on numerous occasions, and always I've felt the same: a deep gratitude for your willingness to share your God-given gifts with me. Thanks. Here's wishing you all the best and I'm continuing to pray for your full recovery. Peace my friend ~ Paul
I have been a Dan Fogelberg fan since the release of his first album (back when we called them "albums" complete with great artwork!). His father, Lawrence Fogelberg, was my band director and gave me private lessons on the trumpet for four or five years. I loved and respected him dearly. I still remember when he brought in a copy of Dan's first album. He held it up for the band to see and was SO proud. He let us listen to it over our lunch hour. I went out and bought a copy right away and have been a fan ever since. I saw Dan at Pekin High School a couple of times when he came to visit his father - once for his father's retirement party/concert. Dan was in the background and really wanted the focus on his dad. I was impressed. I saw Dan in college at ISU just before Christmas with Tim Weisberg and Mr. Fogelberg dressed as a Santa tossing tee shirts and gifts into the audience. It was a great night!
I work at Woodruff High School in Peoria, where Dan graduated, and have felt a kinship with his music and how our lives have touched through his father and similar locations. I have always found his music to be stirring and beautiful and have loved his voice. While I enjoy the newer music, especially the Christmas CD at this time of year, the first two or three albums will always be my favorites for a variety of reasons. "Leader of the Band", "The River", and "There's a Place In The World For a Gambler" have always had special meanings for me.
Thanks, Dan, for sharing your gifts and talents with us all. I pray for you and your family from time to time. More since your bout with prostate cancer. It has effected my father and one of my brothers, so I definitely get a yearly check. My dad survived prostate cancer in his early 70's and lived to the age of 88, passing away a couple months ago. Well, I could write more, but wanted to share my thoughts and well-wishes with you from your old alma mater of Woodruff High School. You are remembered and fondly thought of here. God bless ~ Mark Hootman
I am so glad to hear of your progress ! My Dad had prostate cancer and three years after his treatments he is still cancer free. I believe all kinds of things were in play for his recovery, things I can't even explain. I have been thinking about you & Jean a lot and am so glad to hear the news of your progress !!!! When I go up to Red Rocks I always think of the many concerts you performed & how hearing you always made for the perfect evening. One time even the rain stopped & out came the most beautiful full moon. Thanks for all the wonderful times & many more for you & your family.
I have been lucky enough to have been a fan of Dan's music since the introduction of "Home Free" And I have always been a fan of his acutely intelligent writing and playing. To hear that a person so needed in this world is ailing sends me praying and praying for the man. I am so grateful for all the times your music pulled me through so many horrible spots in my life. A long time ago I was in a serious car accident and your music helped to pull me through the recovery period when I had to learn how to use my legs all over again. Prayer is the least I can do. Thanks Dan. Peace, and go enjoy your life you've earned it to be sure. ~ Cliff Sullins
Dear Dan, I have been a fan of your songs since my cousin Joyce first played me your very first album while visiting her in Buffalo NY, when she was a student at Buffalo U. Though I only have your first two LPs, (and I will buy your new CD and pick up where I left off on the ones in between), your songs and your lyrics and your voice, your soul, and your incredible musicianship, have touched me deeply. I actually have been relistening to those first two LPs for the past few nites, as I intuitively know that somehow they are going to inspire me creatively and in my personal life.
I detect a quality in your singing style that feels like you might also have been influenced by Joni Mitchell. I am too. Musically influenced since early childhood, I officially started composing songs as a teenager. But in 1979, 1980 and 1981, came a plethora of songs pouring thru my soul from some divine source. Thank you for sharing your divine inspiration with all of us. Music is a cosmic healing force, and we are blessed to be its vehicle. I pray for your healing and I shall send you healing light, if that's alright with you. You have given so much to me with your songs, Dan. Thank you. And many blessings to you and Jean, I am so happy you have found your soulmate. After all the past anguished love songs, you are blessed with truth and beauty. Peace and joyous holidays to you and your family, love and light ~ lisa roma
Dan, I've been listening to your Christmas CD this year which I've adored since it was released a few years ago. I love it. It helped me through a painful divorce. I've been a fan of yours since the early 70's. Your albums gave me the strength to get through rough times in college, and further enhance friendships, family, and romances. Your music is unique in that it is different; a marriage of emotion, lyrics, brilliant instrumentals. and vocals. I pray daily for your health and your familiy's happiness, as you have brought so much happiness to so many. Sincerely ~ Beth Hall
Dan, my wife, Linda, and I were glad to hear of the progress you're making on the road to healing and recovery. Thanks for posting the message about it. While we respect your desire for privacy, it was, as you said, a relief to hear the news. Please, understand that we're not nosey, just concerned. It may seem weird that so many people who have never met you personally are worried about you, but music is a magical thing. It's making something from nothing but what's within you. It can tug at your heartstrings, make you laugh, make you cry, and make you look deep inside yourself. And someone (like you) who can write music that can do all of that, and more, is a pretty special person. So, we (the folks who have been touched by your music) worry about ya! We're really happy to hear the good news and send you our best wishes and heartfelt thoughts for your recovery to continue onward. And may the upcoming holiday season be a happy one for you and yours. Thanks, again for the news. It was like getting an early present! ~ Chris
Hello Dan, I am very happy to hear that you are doing good. My daughter was diagnosed on Sept. 13, 2002 with cancer (ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA). She was 5 years old at the time but is 8 years old now. She went through 2 1/2 years of treatment and now is cancer free.(thank God) I just wanted to let you know she is a big fan of yours. Her favorite song is "Same Old Lang Syne." She would always listen to that song through her headphones why she was getting her treatments. She wanted to let you know that she will be praying for you. God bless you and your family. And thanks a lot for helping my daughter get through her tough moments.
Dan, I just heard of your illness and was so saddened to know that someone whose music has brought me such joy, comfort, inspiration and insight is having to go through such a trying time. Please know how much you and your music has meant to my life and how much you are in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks, also, for the "sermon". Sometimes we needed to be reminded that life is precious and we must guard our health zealously. Have a wonderful holiday and know that you are loved and valued. ~ Wilhelmina Anglin
The best of luck to a truly inspirational person.
As I ponder the thought of human life and the joy and tragedies it brings, I can only think of how you, DF, made my life through your music a better place. Sometimes when stress seems to get the best of me, I listen to your music and seem to relax. For me there is no greater way to ease my mind than your beautiful music. I now have my kids who are 7 and 3 listening to your music and they, like myself, find peace in it. So I hope this set back will only make a strong man stronger. Thanks for your music and God bless you and your family. I am sure me and my family will see you on stage again. ~ Emil Gessler from Michigan
Dear Dan, Hope, love and family is the greatest gifts we have. I see that you are blessed by all of these as am I. There is not a day that goes by that I or someone in my family are either listening or singing one of your many songs. Even my 7 yr. old daughter loves your music. She especially loves "Changing Horses" and it's fun listening to her sing this song. This is what you and your music will always be, everlasting. So good luck and our prayers are with you. With great appreciation thanks for the music ~ Stacie, Emil Paytra and Sophie.
"Lift your voice, join in the singing. Lift your voice in a song of goodwill. Lift your heart to the glorious season. Bid all your sorrows be still." Merry Christmas Dan and Jean, and all who come to this place of love and hope. "God bless us every one." ~ Deborah and Laurie
Dear Dan Fogelberg, It's Christmas Eve here in Canada. I haven't been on this side of the Atlantic for Christmas in many years, so it was a surprise to turn on the radio and suddenly hear "Same Old Lang Syne"... and instantly be transported back in time and back home in my soul. You're probably beyond tired of hearing it, but to me it sounded fresh again after so long. It always used to embarrass me that the song brings tears to my eyes, but I don't care any more. After hearing it, I went on the internet, found your web site, and read about you. I really never knew anything about you, you were just that guy who wrote that Christmas song that makes people embarrassed because they get teary-eyed. I'm sorry to hear you have been ill, and I want to send you my good wishes and positive energy. You must have many people whose lives you have touched who care about you now, and with everyone's love and support and good wishes you will continue to get well. I'm sure of it. Be well. And may you be surrounded by love and laughter this Christmas. Thank you for making me feel like I'm home again. ~ Donna
Dan, I've always enjoyed your music you have such a wonderful talent I love playing your music on my piano especially "Run for the Roses." I'm glad to hear that you are doing better. Tonight I was listening to one of my favorite radio stations and they were playing your music. I love your songs. Continued health in 2006 I wish you well. Merry Christmas! ~ Karen, Metamora, IL
Dear Dan, I just wanted to let you know that I have been thinking of you and the life changing ordeal that you and Jean are experiencing. I use to be an Oncology Nurse (for 7 years) and I know how cancer can change a person's life and make them stronger. It makes someone appreciate life in a different manner then someone who has not had cancer. I have been listening to you for at least 20 years and your music has touched every aspect of my life. One of your songs - "A Love Like This" - is on our wedding video. Your songs enable us to relive memories and offer teachings to our children for the future. Your songs will forever remain in our hearts. Just make sure to enjoy every double rainbow that appears over the mountain tops after the storm. Best Wishes ~ Lauren Pond
Merriest of Christmas to you Dan, and your lovely wife..It would not be Christmas in my home without your Christmas CD, it has been my favorite since it came out..Thank you very much for that gift..A Peaceful Fan in California ~ Mia
Hi Dan, I was listening to your Christmas cd this afternoon and it reminded me once again to say a prayer for you. May you and your family have a joyful Christmas and may others touch your heart the way you have touched ours. Sincerely ~ Kevin Stonerock
Dear Dan, HAVE A HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR!! I am so thrilled that you are doing well! Just goes to show you: All you need is love! Love ~ Shirley, Mobile
Dear Dan, I wish you, Jean, and your families all the peace, love, joy, and hope that this season can bring. ~ Mary
Dan, Merry Christmas to you and your family. I am happy to read your recovering. I am not so elegant with words as you so I will just say thank you for the music. ~ Steve - Columbus Indiana
Dan and Jean, Merry Christmas. I wish you good health and many blessings in 2006. I thank the dear Lord that you are able to celebrate this Christmas and look forward to 2006. I have been listening to The First Christmas Morning every day. Your music continues to be a constant comfort and a joyful companion. Selfishly, I pray that you will be completely well and be able to write and perform. You are a treasure. Continued prayers for your full recovery. My deepest sympathy in the loss of your friend Michael Botts. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to send our sympathy to his family. He will be greatly missed .~ Dani Janich, Las Vegas
Dear Dan, I've read through several of the email posts and it is truly remarkable how many lives you have touched through your music. I only heard a few weeks ago on a radio station that you had been battling prostate cancer. Although saddened you had to go through such a terrible health ordeal...I am overjoyed your cancer prognosis is optimistic. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your music which I have enjoyed for over 20 years. You truly have given so many of us a wonderful gift with your voice and your music. I wish you further success in your recovery and my prayers are with you and your family; particularly, during this holiday season. May God truly bless you for continued good health. Much love and appreciation ~ Katie, Redondo Beach, Calif.
I wish you a blessed Christmas season and all the best for a healthy 2006. With the warmest of regards ~ Hugh Beggins
Hi Dan, This is my first e-mail to you but I had to write you to encourage you in your battle. My husband and I went through a 4 l/2 year with leukemia. I do understand the fear and also the blessings that come going through something like this. Wendell lost his battle in Dec.2004 and I want you to know that your music has been a great comfort to me. We are the same age (born in l95l) and you have touched me in a way I can't explain. Thank you for that. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and I do plan to see you in concert someday. Keep the faith. My thoughts are with you. Sincerely ~ Kay Key
Dear Dan and Jean, A Merry Christmas to both of you ! It was so good to have heard of your progress with your illness. Dan, as I listen to The First Christmas Morning.... it is as others have said, a masterpiece, a true work of love. Thank you for such a gift. I pray God will continue to keep you in His loving care. ~ Annie St. Louis MO
Hi Dan, Hope you're doing well these days! I'm approaching 49 yrs old and I thank you for encouraging us to have the exams. Medical issues usually get pushed to the back of our priorities, but your experience hits close to home since I'm in that age group. My name is Rod and I have been inspired by your music since Home Free. I have been drumming since I was nine, and playing guitar since fourteen. Wow, time DOES just slip. My wife and I drove to see you in Rockford, Ill a couple of summers ago. It was the fourth time seeing you in concert. Twice with a full band and twice solo. Thank you for all of the great music and we hope to hear you play again soon. We WILL keep you in our prayers and hope you heal and live well for many years. Have a great Christmas with Jean. All our love ~ Rod and Cathy S.
I guess you can call me a fan, but one that is not very informed. I have seen Dan in concert two times in Utah and was looking to see if he was going to visit us again when I found out about his cancer. Fight and win Dan!! My mother, who is very talented at both the guitar and vocals, sang Dan's song "Leader of the Band" for my Grandfather before his death in 1998. He was the most amazing man I have and ever will have known and Dan's song is ultimately the definition of how I feel about him.My mother was recently diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and I only hope I can give to her the song she gave to my grandfather; the song Dan gave to all of us.
My best to Dan and his family and more so my mother who is the inspiration of my life.~ Stephanie Chappell, West Valley City, Ut
Dan and Jean -- We want to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a New Year full of comfort and joy. Your music has been a tremendous comfort to us through rough patches in our lives, and has provided a delightful soundtrack to our happy times as well. Sending you good thoughts of blessing and laughter. Laurel and M. G. (and our cats Samhain and Sara who are fans by association). :D
Dan, I know that this is your favorite time of year. As I listen to "The First Christmas Morning", I am reminded of what a truly remarkable person you are,.as a musician and as a human being. Your music has been an inspiration to me since I first heard "Home Free". It has no boundaries and always captures the moment. You have a passion for life that is evident in your songs and your live performances. I know that passion will help guide you through this difficult time. If I may borrow a line from your song "Ever On"..."May the trail rise up to meet you, May your heart rejoice in song, May the skies be fair above you As you journey ever on". My best wishes to you and Jean for this holiday season. You are the best! ~ Mike from Houston
I first discovered your music when I was in Peace Corps. Several of my fellow volunteers were fans. I had enjoyed your hits before that time, but never explored the rest of your library. A couple of my favorite times during those two years were reunions with other volunteers when Terri brought her guitar and we all sang. Needless to say, your music was the soundtrack of my Peace Corps experience 20 years ago. It's also the soundtrack of 4 friendships that I have kept and treasured from that day to this. Please take care of yourself and know that you have contributed so much to so many. ~ Bethe L. in San Antonio, TX
Dan, I am absolutely thrilled to hear that you are doing well. I have always loved your music, but more importantly have always respected and admired how you have conducted your life. Even through these difficult times you continue to maintain your dignity, spirit and optimism which will help you overcome this challenge. I admire how you have looked at this event as an opportunity to help others. That speaks volumes about the type of person you are. I wish you, Jean and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. I look forward to sending you another Christmas message this time next year and expect to hear that your health will have continued to improve even more. May God bless you and your loved ones. ~ Bob
Dan, I was listening to your Christmas album and decided to check the web for any updates. I am so happy to know you are doing well! Holiday Blessings to you and yours! With love from a longtime devoted fan ~ Jennifer S. in Latrobe Pennsylvania
Merry Christmas, Dan and Jean, with much thankfulness for a year of healing! I look forward to hearing of your continued progress and to some special music again someday! Love ~ Linda Matson
To Dan: We were so saddened to hear of your diagnosis, but our hearts are dancing to the good news of your remission. Although my husband has always loved your music, he introduced me to your music when we met 23 years ago, and the soothing sounds of your soulful music has been a part of our lives together ever since. We were especially grateful for your Christmas album and listen to it faithfully. Keep up the good fight, Dan, and know that we will love you and everyone you love as long as we have breath in our lungs, for your sweet spirit shines through your music and smiles upon our walk here on Earth. Your music will live forever! We wish you the happiest Christmas and a fulfilling New Year, with many more to come. May the Great Spirit be with you and yours. Love ~ Janice and Fred Mitchell, Arkansas
During this wondrous season of love and light, we send you "CHRIST"mas blessings! Please know that you continue to be in our prayers daily, and we are believing our faithful Lord, Jesus Christ, for your complete healing an restoration. The Lord truly blessed you with so many stellar gifts that you might bless others with your words and music. Thank you so much for sharing those precious gifts with us all. Our prayer for you in this coming year and always is "May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you". Be Blessed. ~ Ben and Mary, Southern California.
Dan, Was just listening to some of your songs on my husband's iPod. Brings back so many great memories from years gone by. Your music is so beautiful and uplifting. Be well, and thank you.
Dan, I am one year older than you. After first hearing your music about 1971, I feel like we have grown up together. You have provided me with so much pleasure over the last thirty-plus years. I cannot thank you enough. I retired from the Wichita, Kansas, Police Department last February, as a Captain. I am now attempting to write a novel and some songs. You are my inspiration. In my opinion, you, not Bob Dylan, are the voice of our generation. I was so very happy to read on your Web-site that your health has improved. I had a quadruple by-pass two years ago, so I can truly empathize with you. My very best wishes to you and your family for a truly wonderful Christmas and a happy, healthy 2006. I would love to hear some new music from you, but, if that doesn't happen, I will still be able to treasure what you have given me over the last many years. Peace, brother!
Dan & Jean, We just discovered today that you are ill...our prayers for a full and swift recovery have been sent to God. Your gift of music and your talent for touching people's souls with your lyrics are blessings to those of us with the same thoughts, but no musical talent. We can listen to your music for days and it never gets old or tired, there is always something new we discover within your songs and delight in this so much! We shared your music with our children, and now, with our grandchildren, and they enjoy it almost as much as we do (hey, we get them to NOT listen to rap! Haha!). Have a wonderful and blessed holiday season and know our thoughts and prayers are with you both and with your family. God Bless ~ Paul & Teri Morales
Dan, It has been many a year when I was blessed with the opportunity to attend one of your performances. It was truly an enlightening experience. My memories of that evening are as vivid as if it was yesterday. I wish you a fast and full recovery and best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks for all the wonderful memories and music. Best Regards ~ Jan
I just wanted to say "MERRY CHRISTMAS" to Dan & Jean.. May you have a Blessed Christmas. Stay warm, Stay well, and Stay Happy! Thoughts and prayers still heading your way... Hugs ~ Cathy in NJ~
Dear Dan, I was listening to The Innocent Age this morning, and last night, and once again thought to myself: this man's talent is a gift from God. You touch my heart still with your gift..as you have for many years. Be well...and may the New Year bring you health and happiness ~ Janet
Thanks for music. It has touched my life in so many ways. Prayers be with you. ~ J. David Payne
Okay, so it's Christmas 2005 and I am looking on the internet for Dan's album, The First Christmas Morning. In the process, I go to Dan's website and find out that he has been battling prostate cancer. Now, I'm convicted because I am reminded that I missed my yearly prostate check in 2005 (my father was diagnosed with it a few years ago and it was caught early, and he is still alive). So, I will be calling my doctor to set an appointment in January 2006. I saw all the messages about how Dan's music has touched so many and I have to add my message because I have been touched as well. My first encounter with Dan's music was through his hit song, "Part of the Plan". When the song was popular in 1975, I did not really get into the lyrics, but I loved the background vocals and when I heard the song on the radio, I would sing the background. In 1980, when I first heard "Longer", I was hooked. I eventually bought the "Phoenix" album and was taken with all the songs, especially the imagery and resonance of "Heart Hotels". But "Longer" has a special place in my memory because I got the opportunity to sing it in front of people on a couple of occasions.
Also, I've seen Dan in concert twice. Once at the University of Illinois in 1981, and once at a venue called Poplar Creek near Chicago in 1988. In '81 he was on tour with "The Innocent Age" (one of the best and most underrated soft rock albums ever!). I still sing "Hard To Say" in the shower and in the car (lead and background vocals, which isn't easy) and "Same Old Lang Syne" still gets played 5-10 times on my CD players during the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Dan also recorded what are, to me, obscure classics that barely got played on the radio. But these songs are special to me, as they are to many others:"What You're Doing" from "Exiles"; "Aurora Nova/The Wild Places" from "The Wild Places"; "Magic Every Moment" and "Holy Road" (I really am touched by the background vocals and the inspirational theme on this one) from "River of Souls"; "Go Down Easy" (I imagine myself singing the harmony vocal w/Dan on this one) from "High Country Snows"; "The Last to Know" (the background vocals are again fantastic!), "Wishing on the Moon", and "Beggar's Game" from "Phoenix"; "Love Gone By" and "Promises Made" from "Nether Lands". I could go on and on. Dan's music has been one of the threads running thru my life. Last night, I listened to the complete "Nether Lands" on RealRhapsody for the first time. (Boy, did he sing high notes back then!). I just thank God for the talent and opportunity given to Dan for our benefit. And I will say a prayer for him and Jean in their walk of life. ~ Will Bailey (a lifelong resident of Illinois)
Dear Daniel, Christmas time comes with so many emotions. I thank God for the wonderful news of your recovery and each day He gives you. At the same time, I can only imagine your pain at the lost of your dear friend, Michael Botts, who has shared your path for so many years. Now your life must continue the journey. Though his journey was cut short, his life now rests in the sweetness of peace, heavenly found. Your life now stepping to the beat of your own drum, heavenly bound. This life has so many bitter-sweet moments, even the sweetness of a rose is surrounded by painful thorns. Yet every new day is a reminder that each life and each day is a gift from God. And as our loved ones leave us from this world to the next, may we honor them, as we continue on our journey, doing all the good we can with all the means we have, giving God the thanks and glory, knowing, Immanuel, God's greatest gift is with us each step of the way. As your tears of sorrow turn to tears of joy, be of good cheer this season for your family in heaven and your family on earth celebrate with you as you step to the beat of your own drum, sharing Christ's love and truth in all that you do. May the blessings of Christ's peace, hope, joy and love find you and your family this season and everyday of the year. Merry Christmas! ~ Debbie
Dear Dan and Jean - I wish you both a very blessed Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year! Dan, you are in my prayers every day for a complete recovery. I hope and pray you are feeling well these days. I have loved you since 1975 and have never stopped. Back in the 70's my best girlfriend and I used to hang out and walk around the neighborhood throughout the summers, with her mini tape recorder listening to your music over and over all day long (year after year). Those were the best summers of my life. This Christmas I want to send you all my love and gratitude for enriching my life with your incredible, musical talent. You have been a blessing in my life since the beginning. All my love to you, Dan ~ Debbie/Chicago, IL
Best of luck to you in your recovery. I've loved your music for many years and pray you get well soon. Best regards ~ Merv Collins
Best wishes from Switzerland.(I'm living near the village, from where John August Sutter originally came). Your songs are in my soul... ~ Martin
Dan, I am the same age as you and feel in many ways that we have grown through adulthood together. I just missed crossing paths with you at the start of your career when I was at the University of Illinois and discovered the Red Herring Coffee House where I understand you played, but never heard you. In the years since, your music has been a companion on the journey, and helped me to verbalize some of the deeper questions we all face. The Innocent Age has touched me so profoundly and is still one of my all-time favorites. So as you have now faced your cancer and your mortality, I again feel a partnership with you at this stage of life. Thank you for being a friend and guide on the journey. As you continue on the artistic and spiritual quest that has been your life, my prayers are with you for healing and continued discovery.~ Bob Pech, Altadena, California
I will not be able to say anything new that someone else hasn't said, but I feel so compelled to just send my best, again, as a fan from the 70s, where I went to college and listened to you night and day. Now, at 49, I still force my husband to listen to me play "To the Morning" on piano. So very rusty, but it moves me to no end. My dearest college friend and I just heard "Same Old Lang Syne" on the radio yesterday as we were driving her daughters around, sang at the top of our lungs, and loved telling them what you and your music did (and does) for us. "Just for a moment we were back in school".... We all just saw your last concert here in Kansas City at Starlight Theatre. As a 10 year breast cancer survivor, I believe we become a part of this odd Club. I had a double mastectomy five days after our wedding in 1995, followed by chemo. Things are great. Point being, I found mine myself, so I was encouraged that you wrote about testing on your website. We all have to be aware and proactive. I, too, feel as if I came out a better person from it all. My best to you and your family and friends (they are the best!) and I'll continue to think good thoughts for you, especially as I wrap gifts of your CDs tonight. ~ Helen Ravenhill
Christmas Blessings Dan and Jean, May this most special time of year, a time I truly believe for miracles, bring you much good health, strength, peace, and love. Remember the one born this season is not only the reason for the season, but he cured the sick, healed the lame, brought sight to the blind. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers daily. Your Christmas album is played daily. I also extend to you my prayers and condolences on the loss of your friend Mike Botts. There is an angel in heaven looking out for you. Hang tough, keep on. You will beat this. Looking forward to hear you are still improving. May you enjoy this wonderful time of year and may "Santa" grant your wishes. Blessings ~ Susan
Dear Dan and Family, My sincerest wishes for a complete recovery coupled with a wonderful quality of life as you live it. Only yesterday I heard you were ill. I saw you in the 80's in Iowa City, Iowa, the best concert of my life. I dearly love how you tend to sing about my life whether you know it or not. I have lived "Same Old Lang Syne." In addition, I met an author at an Iowa City party last week. She has written 1001 Reasons to Love Horses ("Run for the Roses"). Dan, you are my favorite male, soloist singer. Thank you for sharing your talents and enriching my life. My father who also has prostate cancer is doing well. I promise to send my prayers, best wishes, and capitalize on all the belief systems I possess to help you continues on your healing, life journey. Namaste ~ Jane Pech Balvanz
Dear Dan, May the Good Lord bless you. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Your music, your artistry has moved us for years. Thank you for the gift that is your spirit and soul. In 2001 I found my ancestral home site in Donegal. Ireland. When I found it your County Clare played in my heart. Just last weekend our first Grand child was born. Alannah which means Blessed Child in Gaelic is a blessing in our lives this Holiday season. We shared your music with our children as they grew. Today our son Bill, Alannah's father and a Doctor listens to The Innocent Age as we did when he was a child. Thank you for the gifts you gave us with your music. We wait with hope for the news of your full recovery. Monhegan awaits you. Be strong.Slan Tamall. Peace and Good Will, ~ Liam and Claudia Batty
Mr. Fogelberg, my wife and I have listened to your music for some time, and I have been a follower of yours since the very early years. Your skill in weaving music and words into five and ten minute "experiences" that bring a person into whatever subject you sing about are just extraordinary, and you truly deserve the title of "America's Storyteller". I have almost every one of your CDs, and you have been my inspiration to pursue music at home (I work a regular job) for some years. I can only hope to one day be able to construct a song or two that can reflect a hint of the creativity/talent you have shown for so long. We both pray your health continues fine, and thank God that He has allowed you to be around for a while longer, not only of course for your wife and family but for all of us who have been so moved by your music. May the Lord continue to strengthen you and inspire you to further touch our tattered world with song. Respectfully yours ~ Steve and Susan Nagel, Birmingham, AL
Dear Dan, I wish you and your family the happiest of holidays and a healthy New Year. Your music has meant so much to me over the years, and "Same Old Lang Syne" brings back some special memories of an old boyfriend who passed away 18 years ago at the age of 24. Luckily, I was able to have that same special time with him before he left this world. I'm happy to hear that your health is improving and I wish you all the best always. ~ Patti Smith/Long Island, NY
Dan, I was hooked on your music since my friend Jeff Newton (we called him "Fig") told me about your "Captured Angel" album when I was a sophomore in college in 1975. My father had just died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 56, and I was going through a devastating time. Music and dance were, and still are (aside from my love for Jesus and for my family) the most important elements in my life. Anyway, Fig and I were discussing music one evening in December of 1975 during a break from final exams, and he asked,"Have you ever heard of Dan Fogelberg?" When I answered no, he later played the album for me and I was literally "captured." I've been a die-hard fan ever since and I've followed your music closely. Your music has been a mainstay in my life for decades and I've seen you perform several times from Virginia to Arizona. (And I also love photography, Sting, and Mozart. When on long trips in the car, for instance, you, Sting and Mozart or Beethoven are my constant companions.) When my family took a 3-week trip a few years ago through Colorado and into the northwest, we played your "Greetings from the West" and "The Wild Places" CDs. Wow -- what a trip, figuratively and literally. Your music fit so perfectly with the visual explosion of the beauty we witnessed in that part of the country. God bless you, Dan, in your physical healing. You yourself have been a blessing my life. Peace. ~ Lisa M. Houff, Bridgewater, Virginia
Dan: Thank you for taking the time as a youngster to practice playing the guitar. You probably gave up playing ball in the street with the other kids to sit in your room straining your fingers to make the chords sound tolerable to your parents! And now, several years later, we all get to enjoy the fruit of your labor. I can recall playing "Phoenix" out of the box in 1980 as a DJ in the Detroit area. The Program Director had "Heart Hotels" on the playlist and I always managed to sneak in the title track immediately after "Heart Hotels" concluded. That was back in the days when radio was somewhat free-form. Those were the days! May God continue to watch over your health! ~ Jay Campbell
Mr. Fogelberg, I am 19 years old and I have been a fan of your music for as long as I can remember. I was sorry to hear about your prostate cancer and told those that I knew to pray for you. I was glad to hear that you are doing much better. You have been a intricate part of our family even though you did not know it. When I was 7, my oldest brother, 14 at the time, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, otherwise known as bone cancer. He was given a 10 percent chance of living through it. Your song "Run for the Roses" become his theme song. It helped my mother through many sleepless nights and gave my brother a sense of peace, that there was a purpose for his life even if he didn't make it through this. He went into remission and it came back 6 months later. He lost his right leg, hip, and pelvic. I am pleased to say that he is now 26 years old and happily married. He is going through testing again as a precaution to make sure that everything is still okay. We still listen to your songs and my mom still cries, but we wanted you to know how much your music inspires people and how much you helped our family. Even though the song is about a horse in the Kentucky Derby, it has an underlying message that my brother related to; everyone has a meaning, a purpose in their lives, and nothing in life can ever fully prepare for it but that there are people who can help us. We wish you well and rejoice in your times of happiness. We will continue to pray for you. We love you and wish you all the blessings and happiness life can bring. Wishing You Well ~ Rachel
Dan.... your music has touched and affected my life immeasurably! You are gifted by God, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing it freely with the world. Your songs and melodies have enriched me, challenged me, and sent my soul soaring! I wish you the happiest Christmas, may the Love of God fill you to overflowing. My prayers are with you in the Name of Jesus the Christ. ~ Willy
Dear Dan and Jean, Merry Christmas to you and a Happy, Healthy New Year. I am a 47 year old women who has battled so many life threatening medical issues and I know how it is to struggle through the PAIN, the Depression, the Recovery time. One day I decided that I was indeed a survivor and that what time I have left on this earth, I am going to do my best each day to do things that mean something to me. I am going to enjoy my family and friends, especially the little people in my life who bring me such joy just spending time with them. They get pleasure out of the simplest things. I am also going to enjoy my pets. I am going to enjoy my Husband and find humour and happiness in every day we spend together. I am going to love my mother because she truly is a wonderful woman and I cherish her. I want to tell you that your music gives me strength, makes me laugh, makes me cry, makes my heart sing. Thank you. I pray for you when I pray, when I am listening to your music, I stop and say a prayer for you. I pray that you continue to heal. I feel you are my Friend, and I know you are a survivor too. God bless you. May you find pleasure every day in everything you do. Sincerely ~ Brenda
Dear Mr. Fogelberg, First off I would like to say that my prayers from this moment, when I found out about your situation, will be be directed to you and yours daily. Even though I just found out, your persona, and your music has been with me always. You have touched my life in many ways, and I now will do my part in returning the favor. I will be 50 in 2 weeks, and plan to do just as you recommend. I am in medicine and know exactly what you are talking about. So God bless you ,and your family, Merry Christmas, and thank you for all the many years of adding to my life. Sincerely yours ~ Lee LeMond
Dan, My thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. I have enjoyed listening to your music for years. I have also seen you perform at the Peoria Civic Center Theatre and Arena many times. I very much enjoyed your boyhood stories that you told at your concerts. I am hoping that you will have a complete recovery and can be back to doing all the things that you love to do very soon. Best wishes ~ Vicki
First of all, Our prayers are with you! Never under estimate the power of prayer! I have two children, who were probably conceived from your music. On a good night, friends and I play guitar and your music is always played. Badly, but, played. On a personal note...when all dark times have fallen on me, I have leaned on the music of you to spread my arms and reach. Your music is timeless, and you are a phoenix! ~ Chris
A continued wealth of love and health in the years to come. Your music always gets me through the tough times - must be part of the plan. Thank you for being so vocal about cancer screening - the men in my life are here because they heeded those messages. I'm listening to your Christmas album and feel reassured that the world IS a better place. My brother lives in Maine and I in Alaska on the ocean, too. It's a wonderful life! Merry Christmas from the end of the road. ~ kb
Dan, Read about your cancer in the Parade magazine. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in June 05. It was a real shocker. Mine was found early. No symptoms had showed up. I agree all men should be checked regularly. You and your family will be in our Prayers and God's speed in your cure or remission. They can do a lot anymore. ~ Ed, Portland Oregon
Dan, thank you for music that speaks to me. I have been listening to your music since I was a teen & can feel powerful messages throughout your songs. You inspire me to be a better person. You, and your family, are in my prayers. Thank you again for being you. ~ Bob Corron
Dan - Am glad to hear that you're doing better.I hope that your mom is doing well too. I always admired her as one of the last real "ladies". I was in your dad's band in Pekin, and still view him as one of the most influential people from my life there. Hope the New Year finds peace and health in your life. ~ Nicki (AKA Nora) from Durango, CO
Merry Christmas Dan and Jean and all your family. I wish for you health and happiness forever. ~ Carol
You are a exceptional singer/songwriter & musician, and tremendous humble human being. Thanks for your music and your sermon about Prostate Cancer. I have been recently diagnosed with the cancer, luckily my Gleason grading scale is moderate. I will be undergoing surgery in Jan 06. Life gets you wet and sometimes cold.....gets you old! Wishing the Fogelberg family all the best
Dear Dan and Jean, I wish you a happy Christmas and healthy new year. I was sorry to read about your friend. Take care and here´s to ".....another auld lang syne..." All the best ~ Johnny "B" Good in Seville, Spain
God Bless You! All the Best! ~ Laura L. Pauly, Ph.D.
Dan, I am a clinical pharmacy specialist in Bangor, Maine and have found your lyrics deeply important to many fishermen in the coastal town of Blue Hill, where I live. You touch the soul of man and woman. I hope you continue to spread the word to young men of the dramatic incidence of both prostate and testicular cancer. If donations are made to the National Cancer Institute research they can discover both the cure and the cause. Write immortal lyrics daily upon rising for health. Dan Moellentin, PharmD- Blue Hill, Maine
Dan, One can't help but be moved when certain songs take you back to a special moment (s) in your life or even difficult times. Your music is that to me and SO many others. Thank you for 30 years of filling my life with your beautiful lyrics. Wishing you a peaceful and love-filled holiday season. ~ RaNae in Eugene
Hi Dan and Jean! You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers and I wish for you continued health and happiness. My sincere condolences on the passing of Bottsie. He was a loyal and faithful friend. How he loved to tour with you! As we celebrate another Christmas and New Year, please know how much you both mean to so many of us around the world. From our house to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ~ Alexia and David Rogers, Reno, NV
Hey Dan & Jean, VERY sorry to hear of the passing of your good friend Michael Botts, someone you loved and we all admired. Wishing you a Christmas filled with the Peace That Passeth all understanding. Sincerely ~ Tim Ogard, Seattle
Dearest Dan - Though this holiday season has been touched by sadness, the gift of hope remains ... With much love to you and yours always ~ June / Norwalk, CT
Dan, Don't worry about returning to the stage, take care of yourself first then when you have beat the disease your fans will be here for you. We love you here in Louisville, Kentucky ~ Pam and Jerry Caswell
Dear Dan, Although I have the utmost respect for you, your music, and how you chose to handle this part of your life's journey, I feel funny addressing you as "Mr. Fogelberg," so please forgive me for being so informal. You have woven your life throughout mine since...mmmm...probably about 1974 when my radio nearly exploded when I first heard "Part of the Plan," although I soon found out about Home Free and even more quickly, wore that out as well. Your music, your words -- HOW did you know how I felt? Listening to every song on each successive release of yours was magical, uplifting and inspiring. We saw you at Tanglewood in '79 I think, just you and your guitars, because management felt your band would exceed the decibel level! Such youthful ignorance: Thinking we would be disappointed by "just" your solo performance, we were proven wrong and treated to an evening that would be forever etched upon our lives. You have an incredible spirit and talent, Dan. Your comment about the support of your loved ones and following contributing to your healing is so true. As your music has healed and continues to heal us with every passage. We -- my family and closest friends -- will keep you in our minds and hearts, thoughts and prayers, and look forward to a day when you will feel well enough to resume your life's work -- and our lives' pleasure. All the best to you, Jean and your loved ones ~ Pat and Scott Garside
Dan, My wife asked me to look for your albums in storage and I found The Innocent Age album. It brought back memories of how I used to listen to your music every day. My wife and I pray that you are doing well! I went to the link on your website to find out what you have been doing and I was shocked to read that you are going through treatments for prostate cancer. With your faith in God you will beat this and soon be doing what you do best. My wife and I hope you have a great Christmas and the New Year brings you all that you wish for. Sincerely ~ Chris J. Blanchard
Christmas Greetings Dan! I am 54-years-old and have listened to your music all of my adult life. I first saw you in concert at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. It was a very intimate concert and was probably in the year 1972 or maybe 1973 or so. I sat only 7-8 feet from you (everyone sat on the floor). You were at the piano. Needless to say, we went right out and bought more of your music. About two years ago, my husband and I saw you in concert in Denver at The Paramount. We loved the "Phantom of the Opera" routine at the beginning of your show. Every year we listen to your Christmas CD. Your voice is so soothing and soulful. You have a gift. Take good care of yourself. May God bless you in your recovery.
Dear Dan, I was saddened to hear of your recent illness but was so glad to hear that life is now looking rosy for you. From your beautiful music, I feel that your outlook on life will certainly help you along the path to better health. I was introduced to your music when I was living in London (circa 1978) and the only tape that we had in our flat was Nether Lands (which was owned by a flatmate) so I guess you could say that we were indoctrinated, but boy what a way to go. Then after my return to Melbourne I found "Leader of the Band" and also "Same Old Lang Syne" (which is extremely memorable) and since then I have managed to get my hands on all albums that are available. In case you haven't realized I just LOVE you works they truly are words from the HEART. May you continue to fight this insidious disease and live a long, happy life and continue to make beautiful music. Regards and love ~ Margo French
Dear Dan and Jean, You are both in my prayers in beating this illness. Dan, you are still THE most beautiful man that I have ever laid eyes on and you have always had a truly gifted voice. I wish you the very best in your future and I pray with all I am that you will one day return to your music. I thank you for being such an awesome man inside and out. ~ Juliana Hamrick
Dan, When my wife and I were married twenty- five years ago, the song we selected to celebrate our wedding was "Longer". We have always loved that song and all of your music; we cherish the memory of that day and that you were a part of it. We are soon renewing our vows at our twenty-fifth anniversary celebration, and plan to play your song again at our service. For us it never grows old, and we enjoy it now more than ever. We are deeply saddened by the news of your illness, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Thanks for all that you have done and for your wonderful musical legacy that we all share. ~ Jim and Holly Harris
Dear Dan, First of all, my heart and prayers go out to you on the loss of your friend, Mike Botts. I have been wanting to write you a note for several months now, especially since hearing the wonderful news of your cancer recovery. My family and I vacationed on an island in Maine this past summer, and I thought of you and prayed for you so much while we were there. Truly beautiful country - unlike anywhere else in the states. I received your good news shortly after our vacation and felt my prayers for you over the past year had been answered, and I'm so thankful! I'm sure you are celebrating Christmas especially well this year. Blessings to you, your wife, and all you love at this special time of year. Thank you for touching my life as you have through your music these past 25 years. God Bless You ~ Marie Saenger - Westfield, Indiana
I have to share one more thing with you. Just this morning, my 8-year-old son told me, "We need to play that "ship" song". What he is referring to is your version of "I Saw Three Ships" from your Christmas album which is his all-time favorite song. He has loved that song since I purchased that CD when it first came out. He loves to play it over and over again. And he hums it and sings it long after Christmas has past. Thought you might get a kick out of knowing that your music even touches little boys! Merry Christmas! God Bless You ~ Marie Saenger - Westfield, Indiana
A belated but nonetheless a heartfelt wish for continued recovery. Many years ago, your music moved me and I think had a hand in giving me my wife. We fell more deeply in love at one of your concerts. We really hope you do decide to write and record again, but if not, your musical treasury will always be on our playlist. ~ Jim and Nancy Quinn
Dear Dan, I have loved your music since your first album in the early 70s. Thank you for the joy you have given so many! I am so glad your health is improving. Many wonderful holiday wishes for you and Jean. Warmly ~ Patt Jamieson, Newcastle, WA
Hello Dan, Glad you are feeling better. I played "Same Old Lang Syne" like I do every year on new year's. I may not cry at weddings or funerals but that song ... It always gets me, every time. Happy New Year to you and yours. ~ John Seguin
Dan, you and Jean look terrific! Thank you for the holiday message and right back at you! I've not visited your website since your birthday and as I sit here on New Year's Eve I'm reflecting on the blessings in my life. Your music is definitely on that list. Continued good health and happiness to you both! ~ The Pylant Family, Newnan, Georgia.
Hi Dan, thank you for the prose and poetry that is your music. It is encouraging to know that you are now feeling better. My favorite song is "Leader of the Band" which indicates your love and respect for your father as I do mine. From some of your pictures I sense a reverence for Native people and nature. So here's from one Navajo wishing you and Jean all the best.~ Peggy
Dan, I read about your illness in Parade. I went to Woodruff and graduated in 1966. I just wanted you to know I am thinking of you and will include you in my prayers. I have enjoyed your music since you played in pep rallies at Woodruff. ~ Linda Dieckmann
Dear Dan and Jean, Best wishes for a Healthy and Blessed New Year! All of us out here were so relieved and heartened to read your encouraging message on your birthday. You continue to be in my prayers and remembered during the Divine Liturgy in my church on a regular basis. And Dan, you continue to be a huge musical inspiration and mentor to me (albeit from a distance!). I keep wondering when your lyrical and melodic influence on me will begin to wane, but it never does! In today's pop music landscape dominated by Hip Hop and mechanized rhythms, the songs that stand out continue to be those with beautiful melodies. Your works are truly inspiring in that regard, especially as they are coupled with such deep, heartfelt and enduring lyrics that continue to speak to new generations of listeners. But you probably read a lot of such paeans these days! :-) All this to say, God Bless You Always for the gift of your music! With love and prayers ~ Hunt Sidway, Cincinnati OH
Dear Dan, Wow! You are feeling a LOT of love from all of us! What a great time of year to listen to, and remember, with much fondness, "Same Old Lang Syne". Unable to get it off my mind, I got out my collection of your vinyl LPs, turned on the turntable, and gave it a listen, tears in my eyes. Your songs take me right back to when I was 18...when we were all so much younger then. Anyway, I've been a big fan of yours for these many years, and continue to be so. My prayers are with you. So glad to hear of your improvement. I hope, by the grace of God, that I will someday get my miracle of getting my music out there. All good wishes to you and Jean and your family. Most Sincerely ~ Susan Coleman Small, singer, composer, pianist, and kindergarten/music teacher, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
I have been a loyal fan since the early 1970's. I have the great pleasure of seeing Dan in concert many times. When I learned he had prostate cancer I started to pray for him in my daily prayers for my family. I have always wanted you to know just how much your music has meant to me. It has gotten me through the darkest of days. I know that miracles exist and that prayer works. Your music is always playing in my head and prayers for you have always been in my heart. Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year with much to celebrate!!
Dan, I was a student at Pekin High School from 1961-65 when your father was the Leader of the Band, so I have a special appreciation for and connection with your family's musical legacy. I still remember dancing to "Georgia" at high school dances. What an incredible memory. I too live in Colorado, and have since 1970. I wish you all the best, and hope and pray for your complete recovery.~ Sue Sundstrom
Happy New Year Dan and Jean! As I'm typing this, "Same Old Lang Syne" is playing over my stereo. Perfect timing...perfect music...and a perfect way to end this year and start the new year on a positive note. Knowing that you are doing well in your recovery is such a relief! What a great cause for celebration! I wish you both continued good health and happiness over the next year and for many years to come. Best wishes ~ Pam in Louisiana
Dear Dan and Jean, May the New Year bring you both promise, strength, and love. First to Jean, I'm sure your love is truly a beacon in the darkness for Dan and a first light of dawn. Dan, you have been a stalwart friend for many years. You have brought words to the echoes in my heart. You have made me feel I am not alone in times of heartbreak, joy, confusion, and elation. You were there for my mistakes and for my triumphs. For what it is worth, please know, I am here for you now. My prayers are with you and Jean, and my thanks that cannot begin to be spoken for words pale in meaning. May you both be blessed ~ Jonathan Kraft, Villa Park, IL
My thoughts & prayers are with you both, from a friend in Ireland. ~ Mary O'Donnell
You two are gorgeous together!! What a beautiful couple!! Happy New Year to you both. So happy that you are better, Dan. So glad that I spent time on my knees praying...it feels as though I've done something to thank you for all of the beautiful music that you shared with me and with the world! Love, Peace and Light Always! ~ Carole Dowhan, Hunterdon County, NJ
Happy New Year Dan and I will forever continue to listen to your music "Ever On" ~ Susan, Bonanza, OR
Mr. Fogelberg... Like so many, your words and music touch the deepest parts of my soul. I have been blessed to see you in concert many times and privileged to actually meet you after one of your concerts in New Orleans, more years ago than either I or you probably care to remember! I look forward to that opportunity again.....you remain in my prayers and may God give you the same peace that you bestow in your music as you continue to heal. All my love ~ Cheryl Mize, Jackson, Mississippi
It's good to hear things are going well. Shirley and I have life long fans from way back. Your song "Longer" was played at our wedding and will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Best wishes and continued good health. ~ Mike and Shirley
Dear Dan, I have been a fan of your since the 70's, 80's, 90's and forever. You and your music were such a part of my life. In my twenties, thirties and forties (46 now) you were there through the good times and bad times. You just seemed to make whatever the situation easier to deal with. When I was much younger and haven't had all of the knowledge and wisdom that I do now. It would be Panama Red and you, and I would close my eyes and dream that I was high!!! (no pun intended) In the mountains over looking a beautiful valley in a cabin, with a crackling fire in the fireplace and you singing to me. Hey, don't laugh, it was my dream!! And what a dream that was. Anyway, I thank you for that. I saw the clip in the Parade Magazine and was totally taken back. The only time that I could finally get a letter to you, and the circumstances are not what I would have wanted ( I'm sure you feel the same way) .I wish you and Jean all the best and I know everything will be just fine. And I look forward to hearing more good news to come. ~ Maggie - North Carolina.
DF, My best wishes for you and your wife. I wish you well to enjoy the road ahead. Since the early 1960's, I found out that when times of struggle appeared daunting, I would trek through the woods, across the creek to my favorite majestic oak tree. I'd nestle down at the base and listen to the chick-a-dees and warblers. Such a sense of peace and freedom from all outside forces. My belief of what heaven on earth really is! If you have a chance, find that big ol' oak and those song birds. They are what we are searching for. Enjoy! Fondly ~ LeeAnn
Dan and family: Glad to hear you are fighting the good fight! It's like anything else in life, we wake up each day with absolutely no guarantee of success or failure, no expectation of living one more day or 100 years, and no control over anything. Our only choice is how we live our lives, and the choices we make! I have been listening to your songs since early 1970's when I was in Colorado and dating a girl from Tennessee. She encouraged me to see you play at Red Rocks, a beautiful place by itself, but what a place to hear you for first time! I am very active with American Cancer Society, have been Chairperson for our Waterbury CT Relay for life for many years, and we have gone from raising $35,000 first year, to now around $250-300,000 / yr. More important than the money (to me), we have every school agressively competing and raising money, coming to the Relay. We work real hard to focus our Relay on Survivorship and I take great pride and cherish each year the small but important ways we touch and impact people's lives!!!! It is so important for people to know they are not alone, whether a patient, a caregiver, or family member. I thank you for sharing your experience on your website, your experiences can help others find courage to seek treatment. I will take your advice, as I am now 54, and go for my PSA test again. God Bless! ~ Ray Komorowski
Dan, I hope you are feeling better. My brother-in-law, Robert Edwards, in Chicago has some great pictures of you guys way back in the early days. He turned me on to a lot of your music when I was at the University of Illinois-Champaign. We always play a variety of your stuff when Bob, Yola, my sister, get together. Again, we hope you are doing well and I can't wait until you come back to St. Louis.~ Chris.
Dan, I am a Pastor of a small church in Lula, Georgia. I have been praying for you since 1985. I ask that God heal you and that you would give Him the glory. You are my favorite songwrtter. I love your Christmas Songs and I pray that you are a believer in Jesus Christ. My prayers are with you and if I can ever do anything for you, let me know. In Christ ~ Michael Smith
Thanks for all your wonderful music through the years. I've listened to your music since college and it really influenced what I do with music nowadays. Glad to hear you're doing better with the Prostate Cancer. And I'm glad you put a little sermon on your news page about guys getting a regular PSA. I got my first one two years ago at age 50, the numbers were high, and they took it out. Early detection is the key, guys. Thanks for being an advocate and providing links to American Cancer Society and the PC Foundation. the LiveStrong Foundation is another good resource. ~ Paul Colvin, Portland, OR
Dear Dan, So happy to hear that you are doing well - keep up the fight. My kids grew up on your music - it is a part of our lives. I will be visiting my daughter in Denver in a few weeks. We will take our usual trek up to Nederland and have chili in the cafe at the table beneath your painting. Take care, best to you and yours for the New Year. ~ Donald Goodstein, Miami Beach, Fl
I saw your Sound Stage Concert on PBS last night and when telling my friend how good it was that you were still touring she informed me of your cancer. I wish you and Jean a very healthy 2006 and onward. Your songs have helped me through many emotionally trying and learning times in my life. Last night when I heard "Part of the Plan," it brought me back to myself--a place I haven't been able to find for awhile. When I first heard that song when I was 15 years old, it helped me to be who I am. I found the courage to follow my heart to Colorado, a place I know you love as well. Last night, I realized that this where I need to go back to -- that place and that place in my heart. After 20 plus years I'd forgotten... Thanks, Dan! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Health and happiness to you and yours. ~ Julie (lost in Albuquerque)
I've been wondering how you were doing since first hearing the news of your diagnosis. I checked the website this week, and was happy to hear such encouraging news. May you continue to do so well. I posted a comment on this site when I first heard of your illness. At that time, I said your music provided the soundtrack for my life. Just how long that has been true was underscored today while I was listening to the "Greetings from the West" CD in my car and heard you tell an audience that you had not sung "There's a Place in the World for a Gambler" for 10 years. I checked the copyright on the CD and noted it was 1991. I've heard you sing that song in concert, obviously a long time ago. Most recently, I saw you at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford, Connecticut, maybe three, four years ago. You were as good as I remember from the concerts I attended in the 70's and 80's. In closing, you and your wife remain in my thoughts and prayers. God bless. ~ J. Ainsworth, Guilford, CT
Dear Dan, My wife and I fell in love in Peoria thirty years ago to the music and lyrics you wrote, especially "Wysteria". Your work has always held great meaning for us. Be strong and fight through this. All the best. ~ Hal Kearney, St. Joseph, Michigan
Was sitting at my computer today and found out my brother in law, an appeals judge in Baton Rouge La, was diagnosed with prostate problems-pre cancerous. Went to your website and explored it quite a bit. I have always been a fan, but never purchased any of the cds. Well, today I got your Greatest Hits and was just stunned as to how good the mix and sounds are. I guess I was too much of a Southern Rocker. I cannot play a lick, but your music inspires me, as did your pleas for testing. A sincere thank you for your music and inspiration. This is such a beautiful music and I was listening to "Leader of the Band" and it just kicked in some memories that are just so real and solid. ~ Bill Skains
I just got done watching a video of one of your concerts. It was terrific! I too was diagnosed with cancer last March and have completed my treatments. It's so good to be done. Hopefully everything will turn out well. May God bless you. ~ Jan
Dan & Jean, Happy Holidays! What terrific news to hear of your remission! Your music is the soundtrack for the best and most meaningful times of my life. Thank you for every note. Be well! ~ Patti, Chicago
Dear Dan, My wife and I are so relieved of the news of your success in treating your prostate cancer. We have been praying for you that you would be successful in beating this terrible disease and we will continue to pray for strength and encouragement for, your wife and family. Your music has had such a huge impact on our lives. The first date my wife and I had was to your concert at what was then known as Irvine Meadows in Orange County CA and your music was part of our wedding ceremony. I used to escape the rat race in the Los Angeles area to our second home in Running Springs near Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino mountains and looked forward to putting on your music (vinyl at the time) High Country Snows, Windows and Walls, Greatest Hits etc. and listen to them over and over, your music was a therapeutic as the mountains and pines in renewing and refreshing my soul. When I put on your "The First Christmas Morning" CD as we were decorating our tree this year my 8 year old son said "Oh that is my favorite Christmas song" referring to the song "At Christmas Time". Christmas would not be the same at the Engeln household without your Christmas CD, thank you for such a wonderful work. In my Christmas stocking my wife put your Portrait CD collection and I enjoyed reading the history about your music career and life, needless to say I am enjoying listening to the Cd's also. Thank you for the many ways you have touched our lives and even now our boys' lives as they are beginning to appreciate what a special and talented artist you are. May God richly bless you ~ Paul, Michelle, Joshua and Nicholas Engeln
Dearest Dan & Jean - Thank you so much for the holiday wishes and for sharing your beautiful photo! The sparkle in your eyes and the smiles on your faces best express the sentiment ... Happy New Year! With much love always ~ June / Norwalk, CT
Dear Dan and Jean, Like so many others, I am grateful for your music and the encouragement it has given me over the years. I was saddened to hear of the challenges you face from the cancer but encouraged that the treatment is going well. I do pray for your health and trust this year will be your best ever. Warmly ~ Joe Brand
Dan, I wish you the best. I just read that things appear to be improving and that makes me smile. Thanks for your wonderful music, particularly the lyrics. My prayers are with you. ~ Ross
I just encountered your website yesterday when my youngest daughter (age 19) was searching for the lyrics to "Same Old Lang Syne", getting the yearly holiday boost in airplay. I had spelled your name for her and was surprised to see the result. I am sorry to hear of the illness and will ask God's blessings for recovery. I have shamefully lost touch with how much your music affected me - so much so that I even forgot I owned "Phoenix" as well as "Nether Lands" as a young married man in the 70's. With the changing technology I stopped listening years ago to the LP's I owned and have been slowly replacing the old albums with CDs. I am excited to see the "Portrait" box set available and am heading to Amazon right now to obtain a copy. I'd like to say that your songs always reached my heart, and the messages in them related to the experiences I had as a contemporary of the time you grew up in. I always shed a tear when "Leader of the Band" plays on the radio and reminds me of my own father's passing. I also dreamed of being a musician, but sadly didn't possess the talent or determination you had. Best wishes to you, Dan, and your wife, and thank you for the beautiful lifetime of music. Sincerely ~ Dave Krajcik
I'm so glad to hear Dan Fogelberg's recovery and progress. I love his music and hope to hear new music from him in the coming year. Best wishes in the new year ~ Sergio Chavarro- Colombia, South America
Dan and Jean Fogelberg, I would like to wish the both of you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, joyful and blessed new year. Dan, I would also like to express my appreciation to you for the cd The First Christmas Morning. This cd has helped me to regain the Christmas spirit. The songs are absolutely beautiful and I listen to the instrumentals year round. I also really like the emphasis of the songs on the Christ child himself and his mother Mary. Thanks also for all your other works. You are my favorite artist and I wish you health and a return to the studio if it is God's will for you. God bless you. ~ Michael Marascalco
God Bless you! What good news to hear of the remission of your cancer. I am so very glad to hear that, but at the same time sad to know you won't be doing any concerts or new recordings. God Bless you and Jean as you enjoy your life.
Dan, just a note to let you know that I wish for the the best that life can give. I have been a fan for "ages" and can only wish these words could convey what your music has meant in my life. I have played "Leader of the Band" on piano, while my family sang for my father who is dying of copd. He cried, we cried..it was great. I could go on and on and probably bore you but know that your music has transcended commercialism and will stand the test of time. Thank you. ~ Karen
Dear Dan-not so very long ago, in the great scheme of things--your music was a very dear and special part of my life. It literally was the "glue" that held my sanity together at times and many were the nights when I sat alone on the floor and lost myself in your lyrics and melodies to shut out the empty world around me. Pretty pathetic huh? But I don't say that to take anything away from you--I just want you to know that as much as your music meant to me--and believe me when I tell you that at one time in my life, it seemed like all I had--God has set me free from the sadness and self-torture that I allowed my life to become, and offered me so much more grace and mercy through His Son, Jesus Christ. His payment for sin on the cross and the promise and hope of His resurrection is the "glue" now for me- a much more certain stronghold. But I want to thank you for your music and I recommend Christ to you now--he can help you face any dark days that may come as a result of your illness, but he offers even more as he grants us peace with God. Bless you and your family at this season, and I pray God offers you hope in your heart as the New Year unfolds. Sincerely ~ a true fan.
Hi Dan, I was fortunate enough to catch your acoustic show at Baltimore's Mechanic Theatre in 2003, and a more memorable and entertaining show I have never enjoyed. Thank you for the music. Your Christmas cd is a staple in our home during the holidays. I'd just like to say, I have lost my mother to brain cancer at the age of 53, and I saw the toll the treatment took on her body as well as her spirit.... all of which proved futile in the end. If they'd only caught it sooner.
Glad to hear your feeling better. Stay off the stage and out of the studio as long as you need to beat this horrid desease. We'll be waiting when you're ready. Write a song about it and may it be a happy tune. ~ Robert Ahrens, Baltimore, Maryland
Dear Ones, Best wishes to you from another Daniel for the coming new year! Best wishes, Dan, for a speedy recovery! Maybe you are writing new songs, a book of poetry, a novel, your life story? Let us know. A poet from Brittany ~ DAN AR WERN.
The Holiday Season always seems to bring everyone's emotions to a height. I love the season, even though I live in the Valley of the Sun, thoughts of snow covered evergreens, and the San Juans always crowd my brain. I lived in Durango for a short time, and know that that part of the southwest is most majestic. I wish you and Jean a wonderful New Year. It sounds like all of our prayers and good thoughts are reaching the right ears. I cannot imagine my life without your music and poetry. My friends know the only music I ever put on to listen to is yours, and that I most often cry or feel extreme exaltation while listening. God bless you and Jean....I am so thankful to the universe for blessing you with Jean, and Us with you, your music and your love of this planet. Hope you someday will record again. I know you are overwhelmed but I just have a feeling that you have a lot more to teach us in song. Thank you for the Lecture!!! Unfortunately not everyone listens. A dear friend is going through his personal trial with PCa now. I have been trying to convince my husband that he needs to be proactive... perhaps your story will help. With most sincere thanks, always a friend. ~ Debbie
"Love when you can, cry when you have to, be who you must, it's a part of the plan".... Dear Dan- I married in 1974, your music blessed us both with peace and contentment for the 2 years we spent together. We divorced in 1976, remaining friends, but hurting so much. Then, I moved on to live in New York, and your music got me through so much. Your first albums were so inspirational, your haunting lyrics, so much that seemed as though it was written for me and the times I was passing through. "Dancing Shoes", "Wysteria", so many, so wonderful, so beautiful. From the mind of a magic man, a muse, you are a man who has shaped me, and I am sure so many others. In 1981 I decided to change my whole life, go and find who I was, learn and teach SCUBA all over the world, "Part of the Plan" was my anthem, my support through the hard times of leaving a family business, family, and the life I grown so comfortable with. I have all your albums, and have made so many mixes that I have shared with those who mean so much to me. When I heard of your illness, it brought tears to my eyes, (and I am a grown man!). I listen to your music to this day, and every time I hear the early albums, and the mystical creations you allowed us to share, I thank goodness that you were put on this earth in the times that I was here to enjoy all you created. "Well aware of the consequences should the dream fall through", I tried something new, and have continued to do so my whole life.
At 55 now, I only wanted to express my gratitude, and love to you for all you have given me for the past 30 years, and all you will continue to give to me, and all that come after us, who will be able to share in the wonder and beauty that only you could put into words. May God, and the Universe, bless you, and support you through these hard times, and may you again be "born on the first warm winds" again, to give us more of the music and words that have guided, and inspired me for so many years. Best always to you, Dan, and.... the knowledge gained, is worth the price of the pain.... Warmest regards ~ Rob Ross- Las Vegas, Nevada
Dear Jean and Dan, Thinking of you both and wishing you a very happy and blessed Christmas and holiday season. Like for so many others, your Christmas CD is our favorite and plays throughout the Christmas season. Thank you for your Christmas greeting. What a nice surprise to hear from you. The two of you make a beautiful couple and the love and happiness that you share radiates from you. How wonderful that you have been blessed with each other; there is no greater gift than love!! We continue our prayers for God's healing hand to rest upon you. Also, please accept our sympathy for the loss of your friend and fellow musician, Michael Botts. Our thoughts are with his family as well. Much love and continued healing to you in the New Year and always. "Merry Christmas" to all who hold you dear. ~ Lisa and John Andursky, Connellsville PA

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Truly, all of your songs have meant so much to me and my life has been enriched because of them. May you continue to be blessed with good health so that you may do what you enjoy each and every day. ~ Dianne, Peoria County
My sympathy for the loss of Michael Botts. Love to his family. Thank you for the beautiful photo of Dan and Jean. I pray that he is as healthy as he looks. What a nice-looking couple! The best to both of you and to your families. ~ Lettie Fisher, Oklahoma
Happy Holidays DF and JF - Wishing you both much happiness and joy through this holiday season. Peace and God Bless you both. Take Care. Peace. ~ William, Northern Vermont
May the Mother Goddess shine her light of healing on you, from the heart of one songwriter to another. Blessings to you and your beautiful wife, now and in the year to come. ~ Lenora and Dan Skillen, California
What a thrill to see the beautiful picture of Dan and Jean looking so healthy and happy. Such a gorgeous couple. That's the perfect Christmas gift. Thank you Dan and Jean. ~ Carol
Merry Christmas Dan! My husband and I listened to your Christmas CD this morning when opening presents. Your music continues to be one of the greatest gifts in my life. My husband and I have been listening to you since we got together in 1972- it has enhanced our relationship throughout those 30+ years as it's given us something beautiful to share and experience together. I thank you for that. How wonderful you're managing your health challenges- surely the love that is felt for you all over the world is a powerful ally. My best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday season and for the coming new year. ~ Lyn, Kansas City
I have been meaning to write to Dan Fogelberg for quite a while, being a fan since I'm 17 (32 years ago, amazingly enough). Dan Fogelberg's music has taken me through the toughest and most wondrous of times, and I always find I fall back to his songs when I look for something to express what I'm feeling. This Christmas I didn't have my daughter due to a divorce, and she was far away with her father. I listened to the "Same Old Lang Syne" on the radio, and felt at peace. Thank you, Dan Fogelberg, for bringing so much excellent music to my life. I'd also like to say that I am very happy to hear of the improvement and progress you have experienced, and I wish you and your family great health, love and happiness. ~ Sharon
Merry Christmas! I have visited your site often since I first heard of your illness earlier this year and have read many of the posted letters. I have hesitated to add mine, wondering what I could possibly say that hasn't been said by so many others, and more eloquently I'm sure. However, after visiting today and seeing the beautiful picture of you and Jean together, I am compelled to write. Like so many of your well-wishers, I have followed your music faithfully since the early '70's when I was just a teenager, and, as is often the case when you are so young, your music was ( and is) an important part of my life. Funny how music touches you differently and lastingly when you are young. I vividly remember seeing you play in Central Park; must have been '75 or '76. Your music continues to bring me happiness and memories every time I play one of your CD's (or albums if I'm feeling particularly nostalgic and want to hear the scratches too!), or one of your songs comes on the radio. I was very happy to read your message letting us know of your progress and visit often in hopes of reading an update. I wish you and Jean love, happiness, and strength in 2006 and beyond. Thank you for your beautiful legacy of music. ~ Karen, Fort Lauderdale, FL
Dear Dan, I hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday season and a brighter future in the coming year. Your music has been a big part of my life and has meant so much to me in the past 2 years since my divorce. It was tough to process the pain I felt at my daughter being molested by her own father and the fact she was too scared to tell me until the age of 23. But your music helped me ease some of the pain and anger I felt. Again, best wishes and hoping for a recovery. ~ Laura Wiltsie
Dear Dan, God bless you, your family and may the road to a complete recovery be obtained as quickly as possible. I have grown up listening to your music and even though you are not much older than me, I have measured my life experiences through your songs and their release times. From graduating high school in the mid 1970s, college in Buffalo,New York, work for the NYPD starting in the late 1980s, my getting married in the late 1990s and the birth of my daughter, I have always returned to your music to help explain the many different emotions associated with the journey of life. I, as do many, have every album you have ever released, and your song "To The Morning" remains the favorite of mine. I have seen you in concert from the late 1970 in Buffalo all the way to the early 2000s at Westbury Music Fair and only hope that I can introduce my 7 year old daughter to your music from the concert stage. Again God Bless You, your family and may the coming year be filled with joy, happiness and of course health. ~ Walter Lapinski
