 Dan, I am so sorry to hear of your illness. I discovered the news when I found your site looking for some history behind the song "Leader of the Band". I had always assumed you wrote it about your own father. You see, the song holds special meaning to me as well. My own father just passed away at age 83 from colorectal and lung cancer. He had retired as a public school band director after teaching for almost 50 years. It seems as though you knew my dad, too. He joined the Army in World War II, but he didn't let that stop the music as he played all during the war in the bands that existed at the bases in which he was stationed. He gave me, and everyone else he touched, the gift of music. My two sisters took different paths (much like the brothers in your song), but I continued my father's legacy and am still playing today...in my own big band, nearly 40 years after he taught me to play the trumpet. And I also like the words about earning "his love through discipline and a thundering velvet hand". That's MY dad! It's uncanny how similar the lyrics are to my relationship to my father. It's as if you wrote it about him as well. I've always thought of him every time I hear it and now it will have even more meaning. I will be reciting excerpts of the lyrics during my eulogy and then his step-daughter will sing it. It just fits. Anyway, I'm really sorry to hear of your health problems.  Dan, I have been a fan of yours since your first album came out. We have been to every one of your concerts in Nashville, Tn. I was so sorry to hear about your prostate cancer. My Dad had the same advanced cancer you have, and he had surgery 12 years ago and is still cancer free. I have him taking a nutrional supplement from the company Mannatech.  Dan, I sit back and think to the days as a struggling musician how I would destroy the vinyl LP's I had of your music in effort to learn to play your songs note for note to be able to entertain others in the years I worked the bar/restaurant circuit in New York. I have been a fan for 25 years and have always been in awe with the talent you possess not only with your song writing but of the many instruments you play in your recordings. If you asked me which one of your songs was my favorite, without hesitation I would say "Leader of the Band".

Like your Father, my Dad had a love for music, and as a young man he played the 4 string tenor guitar and he never did anything with the gift for music that he had. He passed the gift of musical ability to 2 of his 4 sons, myself being one of them. We see this gift 3 generations later. My relationship with my Dad was not close when I was young until the day I had started playing local taverns and restaurants and we sat at dinner one night talking, and I told him I needed a new guitar and an amplifier. After dinner he said let's go down to the music store and see what they have. We got there and I pick out a Guild solid body electric and a Fender deluxe twin reverb amp .He put a deposit on it for me and the following day he took money from his savings (which wasn't much) and paid for my equipment in cash. After that he and I became very close. He came to see me at every gig I went out on. And for the 1st time in my life, he was proud of what I was doing with my life. My Dad was taken from us with lung cancer in 1981. A few months after his passing, you released "Leader of the Band". I played it for my Mother and brothers and we all cried that night. So I want to thank you for that song and though it was written for your own Father, it brings back fond memories of the years I spent with mine and the memories of seeing him listening to and enjoying the great names in music he listened to such as Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey, and the later greats, Chet Atkins, Tony Matolla, Perry Como,etc.

I am sad to say, I have never had the privilege and the opportunity to come hear you live. Today I was sitting here at home listening to one of your recordings while I was on the PC and it struck me to do a search on the net to see if you had a website in hopes of finding some info on your next tour. So here I am at thelivinglegacy.net to discover your latest tour has been cancelled due to an illness you have been in treatment for.  Dear Mr. Fogelberg: I was a fan of yours before I even knew it. When I was in high school in Arkansas, I dated a young man who used to "spin the records" for the high school dances. During the warm-up sessions prior to the dances, he would always play this one record that I loved upon first hearing but foolishly never thought to ask who it was. A few years later while in college at the University of Denver, I heard the same song coming from my neighbor's dorm room, and raced over to her door, knocked until she answered, and asked like a mad woman, "Who IS that?" She responded, thankfully, rather than slamming the door, saying, "That's Dan Fogelberg and the song is Nether Lands." Since that time and over the years, your music has been a constant in my life, and throughout my travels and different careers and stages in my life, I managed to make my way to your concerts in Denver (to support Gary Hart--yes, way back when), Memphis, and now in Seattle--at both the Woodland Park Zoo and at the Pier. I've gone from having your music on records and cassette tapes to toting it around on my Ipod. Your music inspired me in my recovery from some serious health issues of my own way back when, and I hope that my good wishes and those of all your fans will see you through this difficult time and into a rapid and continued recovery.  Dear Dan, I want to let you know that you are in my prayers as you battle cancer. I truly wish you only the best... I had the chance to speak with you in the Quad Cities about 11 years ago. You were such a kind, down-to-earth person; I remember thinking, "Wow, here's a guy who followed his dreams and is doing what he loves." It inspired me to do the same and I returned to school to become a teacher. In fact I wrote a paper for a course and called it "A Reach to Teach." Corny, huh?  Dan, I have been a fan since the 70's. I remember the first concert at the Auditiorium theater (Chicago) - just you, a grand piano and a bunch of 6 & 12 string guitars..amazing talent!  Hi Dan, I hope whomever receives this will forward it to you. As you are aware, your music has meant much to many. I only saw you in live performance once. That was at the Boutwell Auditorium, in Birmingham, Alabama. That must of been somewhere in the mid-70's. You played solo for the first part of the program, and then were joined by your backup band "Fools Gold" a smashing band in their own right. To say least, I and my wife, were both enthralled. In mortality, I don't see how a performance like that one could have been improved upon. We still esteem it as the best concert ever attended.  I was unaware of your diagnosis. You have given my family and myself such an unbelievable connection that I wanted to offer our thoughts, prayers and best wishes as a family to you for a complete recovery. Here is a little history. In 1989 my wife and I wed and chose "Longer" as our wedding song. In the last part of 1993 we had the opportunity to attend your concert at the Valley Forge Music Fair while my wife was carrying our first child (who was born in April 1994). It was a boy. I would always sing to my son before bedtime. My father passed in the end of 1995. I always chose "Leader of the Band" as the bedtime song after that point. I guess it had a message in it for me as well that I wanted to pass on. My second son was born in May of 1998. To date he sings it with me before bedtime. He even requests it. He is six now. Unrelated, back in December of 2004, we had an opportunity to see a band called the Rick Recht Band. Even though it was his own music, his style was pleasantly reminiscent to me of yours. After the concert I expressed my pleasure of listening to him and asked him who was his inspiration, he mentioned he loved the music of Dan Fogelberg. I was not surprised at the answer as I knew from his performance. In summary, your talent & inspiration is spread a long way and I want to thank you. It wasn't only the songs I mentioned above but "Magic Every Moment" is another my children enjoy hearing. You see you inspire not only the classic age group but your legacy lives on in my children.  My sincerest wishes for a full recovery. I found this website while I was searching the internet to see if you were back on tour yet. Two years ago, my husband and I, along with two of our friends attended your concert as well as James Taylor's concert at Chastain Park in Atlanta Georgia. To me this is the biggest compliment I can give your music- your concert outdid J.T.'s by a mile. I thought he hung the moon before I saw you in concert. So much life and emotion went into your show. I had tickets ordered for your show again last fall but then I was notified that you had fallen ill and wouldn't be able to perform. Needless to say, I was disappointed and I greatly missed not having that opportunity to hear and see you again but I realize how tough the battle with cancer can be on a person's body and soul. Hang in there and keep your spirits up. I don't think God is done with you on Earth yet (even though I think you would be an excellent addition to his Heavenly choir). Once again, I'm looking forward to getting my J.T. tickets- but I sure wish you were ready to come back and sing to ME and everybody else again. Get well SOON!  Dear Dan, You are in our thoughts and prayers for a healthy recovery and a cancer free future. You helped me more than you know quite a few years ago. I'm 48 years old now with a husband and two beautiful daughters, but I have been a fan of yours since my teen years. In my late twenties and early thirties, I developed panic attacks as a result of a traumatic experience. Over the years it became very difficult for me, facing my fears every day. I remember every time you would come to St. Louis, I would wish so badly that I could see you in concert, but I couldn't deal with the crowds. Finally, I decided to take back my life for myself and the sake of my husband and children. I thought I could find my ticket stubs, but I think the year was 1992 or '93, you were appearing at our outdoor theater, Riverport. I had been seeing a wonderful therapist and this was a test for me. I wanted to see you in concert after so many years of being a fan and not being able to see you in person. My dear husband bought the tickets and under no pressure. I took baby steps to that concert. It was wonderful and so were you! It was one of the most freeing experiences of my life. It was a major life change for me. I knew if I could face a crowd like the one at your concert, I could start taking control of my life once more. I will never forget that night - hot August night with a sky full of stars and a warm breeze. I always feel empowered by your music..and I needed that concert so badly. I will always have a place in my heart for you. You were like an old friend, calling me to come out of the fog I was in..remembering my stronger, younger, fearless days.

You are part of our family. I still tear up when I hear "Leader of the Band" reminding me of my own dear father. And I remember explaining to my own daughters just what "Run for the Roses" meant. I started with your albums and now I listen to you on my MP3 player while I exercise. Times change, don't they? Your music still empowers me and reminds me of younger days. So please, Dan, know that we are praying for you and your dear wife, knowing that you two will have many happy years ahead of you. We all need you to keep making that sweet music. Thank you so much.
