"Dear Dan" Letters

Dan, I don't know of any artist that has touched so many peoples' lives the way you have. As I read comments from the other fans who admire you so much, it's like they are writing for me, too. It seems as though we all feel the same. What memories you have brought to our lives. What a blessing you have been. Your music will live in our hearts as long as we live, and hopefully, our generation of today will come to know and understand why you've been such an inspiration. Times change, people change, and music changes, but you never see me without your projects in my car stereo. I love all of your new music, but the old songs that related to my younger years and experiences are the ones that gives me comfort in all phases of my life. Remember one thing. It's not just how much you love, but how much you are loved by others, and that shows that you love, too. You are the greatest, and God is going to take good care of you, because He will protect the ones He loves. God bless you, Dan. ~ Allen Duncan

 

 I followed Dan from coffeehouse to concerts starting when I was in college in 1976. I remember his music blaring from my dorm room. I'm now 47 and it's still blaring in my house. His talent is definitely my touchstone. No musician has ever had the impact on me that he has. I can't tell you how much my thoughts and prayers are with you, Dan, and your family. ~ Janet Argo

 Dan, I bought your 'Full Circle' CD today and drove around sunny Charleston, SC wondering how you are. I'm so sorry about the news about the cancer yet I know that with much prayer and much medical attention you will get beyond this and I look forward to seeing you in concerts in 2005 or 2006. I have never been blessed enough to see you in concert yet I remember listening to your music over 30 years ago and being blessed by it. "Nether Lands" has been interpreted for me in my walk with Christ as a clear choice, one road will bring me to Him and the other will not.  Dear Dan, My name is Loriann Ringgold. I live in Elko, Nevada. I am living proof that no matter how bad the cancer, you can get to a place where you can be in remission and stop it from progressing. I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma January 7, 1999. It was a particularly bad form. There is still no cure. I am still here. The fight has been long and hard. I have had family and friends with me all of the way. I also have Type 1 Diabetes. My faith in God has sustained me as well...I want you to know that I have always loved your music. Listening to your music helped me to get through the hell of cancer treatment. I have loved your music for many years. You are in my prayers for a full and lasting remission!  Since I was a 17 yr.old girl in Colorado I have followed and lived with Dan's music.I am now 47 years old and his music lives in my soul. I have every piece of music he has ever made. His music moved me more than any other. I was crushed tonight when I found out he was ill. My prayers are with him and his family. You can beat this!!  Dan, In December 1982 I was given a ticket to attend "an acoustic evening w/Dan Fogelberg" in Hartford(CT) and went thinking I'd be bored by your music, but left that evening a real fan of yours. Funny thing is, the people I was listening to before that show haven't exactly stood the test of time(insert your own -men at work- joke!) but your music is timeless. In all seriousness Dan, I know that your music isn't the only thing that will stand the test of time-you will as well.  Dan ....I feel sillly writing this really, but when I was a senior in high school I had this silly little secret crush on you. I played your albums over and over and eventually found my love yet not my true true love...is there such a thing??? Now I am in my forties and have raised my kids, one a marine..and I find myself a new hobby and that is collecting vinyls. Just today I bought eight of yours and not even knowing of your illness. I played them over and over and they brought me such solace and comfort still after these many years. Do you see how you can touch people forever? Amazing.....all my energy to you in hoping you will get strong and continue with this journey.  Dear Dan: It was 1976 that I first discovered your music. To say I discovered it is actually a misstatement, an older brother introduced me. I was 16. Captured Angel was the "album" that first drew me to your style. "Old Tennessee", "Next Time", "The Last Nail"...I was captivated. As the years passed I continued to listen. Nether Lands, Phoenix, Twin Sons of Different Mothers (I have a good friend who is often mistaken as my brother. We tell people we are "twin sons of different mothers"). And then, of course, The Innocent Age. Just last year I gave that CD as a gift and wrote in a card, "this is the greatest collection of music ever composed. " I find on that CD, as in much of your work, it is the songs that were other than commercially popular that mean so much to me. Songs like "Only the Heart May Know", "The Sand and the Foam", and on it goes. I have enjoyed the creativity and mix of musical genres in all the CD's that followed The Innocent Age through your most recent production, Full Circle. I first saw you in concert at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, I believe it was December 1983. What an electric night!There have been many concerts through the years, mostly in Kansas City. What a ride it has been. To say that I have been enriched by your lyrics, music, and vocals would be a gross understatement. When my wife and I were married in 1985 we played Along the Road in our wedding. As a gesture ofappreciation for all the "moments of rest and glimpses of laughter" you have provided through the years, I send this note of thankfulness with my very best wishes. ~ Your fan in KC...

 I have been reading the good thoughts and can't really think of anything more to add, but I'll try. I'm a fairly recent fan, always knew the tunes (as many people do), but for some reason I just started to really get into Dan and his inspiring music within the last five years. Collected all I could get, took time off work and drove to see his concerts, thus deepening my love, appreciation, and total enjoyment from his music and performances. Seriously saddened about his illness - when I got the call about the tour being canceled I was just stunned. All my thoughts and prayers to DF and his family for a speedy recovery. There are many new cancer drugs in research now targeted therapies that are less toxic than chemo. When my husband was first diagnosed, we listened to your music often to help get through some of the scary times. I wish there was something we could give back to you at this time in your life. You and your family are in our thought and prayers. I hope you can draw strength from the millions of people all over the world who have been touched by your music.  I have just been looking through my music collection, doing a bit of a tidy up! Going through my collection I found a tape that saw me through my late teen years, the break up of relationship with both boyfriends and parents. It was Dan's Greatest Hits. I put it on and was transported back many years. I still knew all the words, but that didn't surprise me, his music is timeless. I have come to this website for the first time and was shocked to hear the news of Dan's illness. Thank you Dan for getting me through my rough times.  Dan, like everyone else that’s posted here I’d like to thank you for the wonderful gift you’ve given us over the years. I still remember asking the friend of mine who worked in a head shop/music store what she recommended. Home Free it was and you’ve been a part of my life since. You and I sang “Stars” to my wife on our first date in a parking lot. So many of your songs have hit home and mark periods in my past it would take pages to describe and I’ll spare everyone that. That January for my birthday my boyfriend (who is now my husband) drove through a snowstorm to visit, and gave me all your albums (that were out at the time)! And of course I have continued to add all subsequent albums to my collection through all these years. We have seen many of your concerts and truly love your music. I always meant to write and tell you how much I love your Christmas album, and I never did, so I'm saying it here!  Dan -How quickly can life change? Not long ago, I heard of your cancer, and I wrote some well-wishes.You'll never know how prophetic those were for me. I recall writing something about listening to your own music and lyrics, and garnering strength from the beauty you've created. And also adding that you should feed from the love around you and not be afraid to ask for help. Well, I'm sorry to say the same has just happened to me. Six days after my 41st birthday, I got diagnosed with cancer. Thank GOD it's in an early stage. Scary, yes, but I'm taking the advice I "gave" you and am trying to be strong. The whole point of this message? Well, to say that I am finding even more strength thru your lyrics. They are so hopefull ("Icarus Ascending") that it brings me to tears more often than not. They are good tears, cathartic tears, and I want to say Thank You again. I hope you are doing well. I want you to know you are helping me thru this even though you may not know it. I KNOW that you are looking at each day differently now, and in that, I hope that you are staying positive and strong. GOD BLESS you my friend.  Dan,  Over the many years that you've shared your soul to all that would listen, there are countless souls that I personally know wouldn't be with us today,  if it hadn't have been for your words of inspiration through your music, words that have lifted up the souls of many, including myself and helped free them from their despair. You have truly helped people more than you'll ever begin to know. Working in a drug and suicide crisis house as a counselor many, many years ago, it was your music and the music of the Moody Blues that we played for folks in serious drug and suicide crisis situations to help bring their sometimes twisted minds back to a good place. I personally think that this helped more than anything else that was ever tried or done for them. Many of these people described it as visual music where not only did the  words and the music gently strum their heartstrings, releasing them from whatever was tormenting them,  but it also opened their eyes to a vision of themselves in a much more beautiful place where there was love and hope again.

 

 I didn't write this to embarrass you or to stroke your ego either.  I just feel that the situation you are presently in someday will be the basis for so many more songs of hope and beauty for you to share with the world. Dan, I've always been one of your biggest fans and you've always been one of my best friends.  I've played your music on my guitar for as long as I can remember wishing they were my own, and when someone asked about them I would always say that you wrote the songs I was supposed to write but couldn't. This is probably not a cake walk for you but I think that nothing worth learning and someday sharing is. My mom told me you wrote it for your dad and I thought it was nice. At school we prayed for people that need help and when I found out that you were sick, I prayed for you. I also like animals and nature and when I grow up I want to be a veterinarian. I have a hamster named Bijou. My mom and dad like your music too, especially my mom, she plays your music none stop.  Dan, From a young girl working in a general store in Hillside Colorado, to a grown woman with two children living in Colorado Springs, I have always been touched and haunted by your music. As I worked at the store one day listening to this music and looking out the window at my beloved Sangre De Cristo Mountains and I just knew whoever was singing knew what the mountains did to your soul. I had to eventually asked the owner of the store to tell me who was singing this unbelievable music. It was you. I've gone to see you at Red Rocks, Denver, Pueblo, and Colorado Springs as often as I've heard you're around. I continue to be touched by your music although I've listened to it for so many years. What a true poet you are to touch such a small life as mine sitting in the middle of nowhere, looking up at my beautiful mountains just as I'd done all of my life and connecting to a nearly angelic voice and feel like I'd finally found music that I truly touched my soul. I was just diagnosed with colorectal cancer and will be starting radiation/chemo therapy next week. I also just found out that 2 friends have cancer; one prostate, and the other has multiple sites. I am blown away by this. I am hoping that we all have good outcomes and wanted you to know you are not alone in this difficult battle. You have been an inspiration to me, musically, since the 70's and now I hope that we can support one another for full recovery from this terrible disease.  Hi Dan, just let me tell you a little story: My son David is 9 years old and is playing the guitar. Yesterday I drove with him to the city of Salzburg and played a CD with your music. When he heard "Magic every moment" I had to repeat it many times, he was fixed on this song for nearly one hour. Than he talked to me: "Papa, when I am growing up, I will be a musician (and a soccer-player) and I will sing this song all the time! I love this song so much!!!" I told him a little bit about you and he was listening very serious. I think, it's great, that our children get their music-inspiration not only from the (mostly) stupid Radio-stations.  It is 1976, and I am a working student at a riding school near Honolulu, Hawaii. You are in town for a concert, and turn up at the stables - you and your dark-haired lady friend with the pirate smile - for a trail ride before the show. I was adjusting the stirrup on your Western saddle, and looked up to see your intense green eyes smiling back in to mine. My still-awkward 19 year-old heart froze in my chest, and the image was branded onto the cells of my visual cortex. You couldn't have known that song "To the Morning" had made my very rocky emergence from my teen years survive-able. Later that night, when the floor of the Neil Blaisdell Arena became a swaying sea of match- and butane-lighter flames, I was there adding my voice to the swelling chorus celebrating a gambler's place in the world... Let it shine, oh let it shine... I have never recovered from falling in love with you. I see that this illness offers us all a chance to tell you what you mean to us. Did you know before now how much your gifts mean to so many? Would we have contacted you to tell you if not for this? (Or maybe this is just how I make sense of the arbitrary nature of cancer.)  Dearest Dan, It is impossible to put into words just how much your music has meant to me over these past 30 years. You have been in my life with your beautiful music,since I first discovered 'Home Free' in the early 70s! I was fortunate,and extremely thrilled, to be able to see you perform at U of M,(Miami,Fl) very early in your career. Although a mother in my 30s at that time, and not connected with the college at all, I managed to get on campus! I sat among the students, completely entranced! Your music was like a glimpse of heaven to me! Your voice, that of an angel!

 

Over the years I saw you perform nearly a dozen times, in Miami and throughout Florida. Once even getting backstage and meeting you briefly. One of the highlights of these past decades has been my photo which I got that nightstanding beside 'Dan Fogelberg!' However inane that may sound ,truth is, there have been few days of which I haven't done just that! Your music got me through some hard times -some sad times! I would put on 2 or 3 LPs and just be soothed and healed...made happy and whole again!

 

My last time seeing you in concert was last year in Atlanta,Ga. -a wonderful show! I was looking forward to seeing you again, on tour this fall ,in Fl. ...The wait will be longer, but I WILL see you perform again! Over the years I have introduced your music to so many people! Usually it takes one 'listen' and most are just as taken as I was ,back in the 70s! I am teased by my friends. They say I must be on your payroll, because of my constant promoting of your music! I'm known as the world's #1DanFan ,with those who know me! ...And I have to say-your Christmas CD (The First Christmas Morning) is THE MOST beautiful and unique music! So special! I have given gifts of your music to so many people,especially this Christmas CD !  Dear Dan, I have been a fan for years and would like to thank you for the beautiful music you have brought into my life. I am quite familiar with the challenge you are facing. In 1994 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1999 I received my second primary breast cancer diagnosis (Stage 3). Losing my breasts was tough and the chemo was tougher. Last year my brother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He is doing well and so am I. You can fight this battle and win. Allow yourself  to feel the range of emotions this diagnosis brings on but focus on the positive. Hold on to your sense of humor. Take heart from the fact that so many advances have been made in cancer treatment. I have several friends diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer who are doing great. One has been stage 4 for more than 10 years, another for almost 3 years...She is currently on vacation in the Mediterranean! Be your own advocate. Question the docs and fire them if they don't respect your participation in your cure. Now more than ever you will be aware of the little miracles that each day brings.  Dan, this morning on my way to work, I stopped to take a picture of a breathtaking sunrise. As I stood amid the glory of the sun's rays, on an autumn morning in New England, a song came into my head. This is but one example of how different life events and memories align with your music. I am 49 and have enjoyed your music since I was in college. I have seen you twice in concert and only wish that my guitar playing could come close to yours. I read about your illness in the local newspaper and I was saddened that you are going through this. I have encountered many folks who have fought cancer and who have won. It seems that one's attitude can be as effective as any treatment.  Dear Dan, I was so sorry to hear of your untoward visit from the "big c", so to speak. When I heard on the radio that your tour was cancelled and that your illness was the reason why, I spent the rest of the day pondering the eternal question of why bad things happen to good poeple. I remember hearing your songs on the radio when I was a child growing up in Boulder,Colo. That was a wonderful time in my life, and I re-discovered your music in the early 1990's when I bought your greatest hits on cassette. Your smooth, mellow harmonies melted my heart and it was like time traveling back to Boulder again. I could almost see the mountains and smell the Colorado spring turning to summer as I listened to "Hard to Say", "Heart Hotels", and the other great songs on that compilation. From then on, I've been hooked. I now have all your works on CD (My favorite is "Phoenix"; any chance of a tour with a live band again?) and everyone who hears me play them loves the music and says I have great taste.  Dan, I am surrounded by family and friends both having to undergo treatment and beating prostate cancer. They did great throughout the experience due largely to the Cleveland Clinic, their positive spirit and the support of all of us. Current treatments for prostate cancer are phenomenal! I recently watched your PBS special and being a former dancer, always thought that it would be wonderful for a national dance company to take the Nether Lands album in its entirety and choreograph it as a complete ballet stage performance.  Went to itunes to download music to help me through my personal journey thru dementia with my mother's recent diagnosis of Alzheimers and went to Dan Fogelberg, who helped me through my youth with music I still sing to my two teenage sons who had no clue as to who you are. I was so sad to see the news about the cancellation of the tour due to illness and have you and your family in my prayers. Tuned my boys into Warren Zevon as a source of strength and comfort when my mom developed colon cancer, and just this past week when she was diagnosed with Altzheimers, I searched the internet for comfort in the music that gave me comfort in the 70's 80's and 90's, only to see that I needed to pray for my sources of strength also. All love and prayers to the higher powers for my sources of strength and please know, there is real power in the prayer. Thank you for all the beauty you gave us in your music and poetry. All will be well, I know, as you will never know how much strength and love you have given to millions ( especially me) through your music and poetry during our critical years. You will pull thru, if only to give a poetic voice to us who have none. Love to you and you family. Thank you forever.

I currently have everything you've ever recorded. I've seen you 14 times in concert throughout my life. You have taught me so much. Through your music, you have been a constant source of courage, love, wisdom, and inspiration, and although I don't know you personally, you have been one of the most important people in my life. My life has changed dramatically since then. However, every time I hear your songs on the radio, I am taken back to that time in my life that is very special to me. I guess, in a way, the music that touches each of us is like refreshment for the soul, as water is refreshment for the body. You see my daughter Katie Mae was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 14 she fought a good fight, the most courageous little sh*t I'd ever seen. She's 23 today and expecting her first child in Feb of 05. She is a cancer survivor. My wife Roxi was diagnosed with breast cancer in Jan of 04 and she fought and is still fighting this monster they call cancer, but is doing very well.  Dear Dan: Home Free has remained my favorite album of yours since 1972. A friend brought it from New Orleans to Atlanta and we listened to it over and over. I remember calling the radio stations to request 'To the Morning" and they'd say, "Who?" I also remember being very indignant but secretly happy knowing that I'd "met" you first! My parents would not let me drive through downtown ATL to go to the Great Southeast Music Hall to see you as I was only barely 16, so my Dad took me and I arrived at least an hour early (Dad stayed outside). I browsed the gift shop there and discovered "Souvenirs". The cashier there GAVE me the album. I sat cross legged right up front while you strummed your guitar. It was as if you were playing just for me!! Don't you remember me? I passed you in the hallway on the way to the ladies room!!??? I was a single mom, two great kids, no money, no time, lots of worries. I escaped some of the worries and soothed my soul with your music. My stereo was on almost continuously.  Dan, long before the advent of the internet as a way to share, I met someone in New Jersey because of a phone business connection, back in about 1979. The relationship with him did not persevere, but he gave me an Easter gift which was your "Captured Angel" album...yes, before the days of CD's. I had never heard of you before, but at that point my relationship with you and your music has never ended. It has touched my heart and soul and is one of the bonds I have with my sister. I have seen you in concert in Omaha and Minneapolis and will never forget the show where we were in the 2nd row at the Orpheum. What an experience and I am sure you know the joy you bring. Having grown up with the Beatles I had naturally assumed otherwise. It suddenly dawned on me that when I pick up my Martin guitar more than half of what I regularly play is one of yours (Make Love Stay, Snowfall, Leader, Believe, These Days, Last Nail, Once in Love, etc). I've spent the last 30 years trying to duplicate your style and sound. I bought my first stereo speakers based on how the Souvenirs album sounded.  Dear Dan, I was looking on the internet today and found your website. Not being very familiar with your music I was looking for information about CDs, etc. I have only one of your CDs, "The Very Best of Dan Fogelberg" which I bought in April for the song, "Leader of the Band". My brother died suddenly and unexpectedly this April. In addition to his day job he played in a band. When we were making the funeral arrangements, and trying to decide what music to include in the service, the singer from his band said he'd like to sing "Leader of the Band" because my brother was the leader of their band. I must admit it wasn't a song I was familiar with but it is a song now that instantly brings my brother to mind. Some days I can listen to it and other days it's too painful but it is a song that will always stay in my heart.  Dear Dan, For many years I have put you in my past. Too painful were my memories of my youth. I had your songs in my first wedding. "Looking For A Lady" and "There's A Place In The World For A Gambler".My family thought I was nuts for these two songs, but I guess we all gamble on our future.My marriage lasted six years and like the marriage I put my past behind. I have been married 11 years now to a wonderful man from Athens Greece, but I still remember my best friend "Possum", playing all your wonderful songs in the corn field, as we drank wine and looked at the stars.I have a form of Lupus, recently discovered and am on Coumadin and lucky to be here and I must have known beforehand, because I started listening to my old favorites and trying to get in touch with everyone in my past to say I was sorry for anything I had done.I just wanted to say I hope you are well soon and thank you for being a part of my youth that youths today will never know.  Dear Dan, Your music for about twenty years has brought so much pleasure, and at times comfort, to me. Fogelberg music is my favorite and I have tried to make one of your concerts a yearly event. I was heart broken when I learned of your illness. For several weeks I could not even listen to my CD's because it made me so sad. Your music being silenced for even a a short time was unthinkable. I hated you were having to deal with cancer and uncertainty and I was angry at the disease for robbing me of the joy your music had always given me. It was like a grieving process. I came to realized I was robbing myself of that joy and that it was not a very good way to honor the man whose music had meant so much to me. I was helpless to do anything about your situation, but I felt something positive had to happen as a result of it. So, I started waging my own little war against prostate cancer. I wrote to all my family, friends, and acquaintances about the importance of early detection, PSA testing, and early treatment. I wrote letters to the editors of several area newspapers with this information and passed out information to coworkers and church members. My Sunday School class sponsors a food festival each year that raises several thousand dollars for The American Caner Society. Next week I will be one of the food vendors at this event and sponsoring my booth in honor of you. A good friend who had prostate cancer last year (it was detected early and he is doing great now) and I will also have an information table about cancer with a focus on prostate cancer. We will also have an information table next May at the Relay For Life event I am in hopes that at least one life can be saved or one man can avoid a more radical course of treatment because of these efforts. Anyone reading this is a fan of yours and I hope he or she will join me in promoting prostate cancer awareness. There are a lot of us and together we can make a difference.  Dan, So many have said it better than I will, but please know that your soul, your words and your velvet hands on the keyboard and neck of the guitar have inspired and buoyed me for 10s of years. It's no surprise that I play just 2 instruments: guitar and piano. Over the years I have had great difficulty obtaining your music in England and my life's ambition has been to see you in concert. When I was twelve, My sister and her friends asked me if I would like to go see Dan Fogelberg at the Providence Civic Center. I'd been listening to you because "Twin sons..." and the song "Part Of The Plan", these had already caught my ear. So, I thought OK, I'll go hear some mellow acoustic music, this will be nice. I'll never forget you came out with a Les Paul and you guys tore into "Face The Fire". Holy Cow! I was floored. I couldn't beleive it, it was like seeing "Zeppelin" or something, man. So, after that, my little cover band used to open up with "Face The Fire" for the next year. You had Kunkel on drums and I think Joe Vitale was on the Prophet 5. Was Waddy Wachtel with you then? Anyway, That was in 1979 I beleive, my sister is still following your career closely. I'm scoring the NBC sitcom "Joey" now after many years of making records and touring. People like you are an inspiration to me. I appreciate the graceful ones, it doesn't have to be a negative experience this Rock n' Roll thing we do.  Dear Dan, It took having a dream about you last night till I could figure out just what to say. The dream was that I was visiting you at your home in Maine. I walked into a shop you have set up and there you were, working on an old boat. In a corner of the shop was a refrigerator that had a bunch of beer taps on the front of it! You stopped sanding a part of the boat that you were working on, we grabbed a couple of beers and went outside and admired the Maine coast. Then we picked up a couple of Martins and played some old bluegrass tunes. That was it. I woke up with alot of hope for you. My job as a mountain guide has taken me to all corners of the earth and the highest peaks on the planet. Your music has always been there and brought me a piece of comfort and home when expeditions became difficult. I thank you for that. My wish for you is that life will soon return to normal and that you will be able to enjoy the day to day moments of your life without the burden you now bear.  Dan, Several months ago during one of my late night "everybody's in bed and I should work but what the hell, I'll surf the net" escapades I went looking for your CDs on ebay.  Hi Dan - Like millions of others, I also have listened to your music since Souvenirs. I am 47 yrs old and still get that wonderful feeling when I hear your songs. I am simply writing to tell you that I am so glad that you have chosen music for a career. Your words are in many of your songs are poetry unequaled in hundreds of years. I have never met anyone that did not like or love your music. You are a very gifted man that brings joy to my spirit/soul.  Dan, You have been an inspiration to me since the early 70's. Recently my husband and I recorded the special you had on AETN. That was the reason I searched your website today, to see if you had any concerts scheduled in the vicinity. I want you to know that I am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed in the fall of 1994 --- about a week before attending your concert in Memphis. I underwent chemotherapy and have continued with extensive follow-up since that time. Listening to your music always helped me when I was down. You are definitely in my thoughts and prayers. A positive attitude and prayer make a powerful combination. I also want you to know that my husband and I never go to any mountains, (Ozarks, Smokies, or Rockies) without listening to High Country Snows & Nether Lands repeatedly.  I have been a fan of DF since I was 10 years old (I am 39 now). I have seen you in concert 9 times. I have gotten so much pleasure from your music and inspiration in my own career as a singer and songwriter. I wish the VERY BEST to DF and his family during this difficult time. So many times people take health for granted until they are touched by something like this and then the realization is that health has an effect on happiness. I found this out when my daughter at 3 was diagnosed with a severe illness and had to undergo 3 major operations and months in the hospital. She is now 12 years old and doing wonderfully!!  Dan, My siblings and I have been fans of yours for many, many years, as well as our mother who lost her battle with lymphoma cancer this past year in May. She was 81 years young. She tried any new treatment they could give her until her last 2 weeks. She loved your music, especially "Longer"...We'd all get together for the holidays and sing all of your songs. My younger brother took me to see you for my birthday about 4-5 years ago here in Minneapolis and it was so great. When Mom passed away, I just wanted silence for some time, but now am enjoying hearing music again. And yours is the one I turned to first. It's so beautiful. I love playing Nether Lands this time of year. Good and bad days come and go, but it will be that way. I think about you so often and pray for your complete healing through this. I'm amazed at how many stories sound just like mine through the postings of those who care about you. I heard your song "Stars" on an Allison Kraus CD and thought what a blessing that your music can be sung by you and others, and it's still incredibly beautiful.  I grew up in Wisconsin and Oak Park, Ill.. It's peculiar but the heartland seems to inspire a certain imaginative peculiarity in its artists. I became a poet because of those fields in Wisconsin, and leaves frozen beneath the lake glass in winter. I am a visual, pyrotechnic, sound poet, who loves this earth dearly. I tell you this only to fit the communique, but I endured an abusive childhood, oddly it once included hanging literally in the basement. I first heard your music at work, when I was youthful, and the song, I will never forget, was "Scarecrow's Dream." I had found a kindred spirit. I have over time come to place you even above the Beatles, and that is near impossible, for they also have been great company along life's journey. I was reading your liner notes for Portrait, and noticed you mentioned you did not know what "Scarecrow's Dream" meant, but you loved the song in any case. I have always wondered how in the world you wrote my song; then again God can do that, and did through you, for me. You may protest the idea freely, but I believe I am the scarecrow that once hung in a basement as a child. I have written many poems, but cannot write that one. You took care of that hellish time for me. I wish I could write some verse of similar healing for you. Over the years your music has become deeply rooted in me, Dan. Maybe God will listen to the humble prayers of the scarecrow you touched, and return the healing and the blessing back to you. I believe in his vast love, God will restore you.  Hello Dan - Last night I watched your performance on Soundstage here in Anchorage Alaska. I have waited 30 years to see you in a live performance and the anticipation was realized in that magical hour. I was introduced to your music while I was being courted by my first husband in college back in 1976. He was a musician from Natchez Mississippi and the Alaska pipeline had brough him a long way from home to Fairbanks Alaska. Songs like "Looking for a Lady" he would play for me and it started a love affair with you and your music that has never waned. Your music has put so much poetry and meaning to so many things and I was so proud of your green album "The Wild Places". Your grace and clarity of thought has buffered me in those musical moments and made more solid my own convictions within a harmony of the soul. I thank you for this and I pray for you every day.
