"Dear Dan" Letters

October 2005

Dear Dan, This is a thank you letter for your song,"Leader of the Band."  My incredible father died this week and we have sung your song to him for the last time.  The first time I heard "Leader of the Band," I was driving on an L.A. freeway and I had to pull over because I was crying so hard.  My father is the most wonderful man I've ever known.  He also was a musician most of his life, teaching music at a school for missionary kids in the Philippines for about 15 years.  Our family of five children sang together for all of our childhood years and several went into music as a profession.  The powerful influence Dad had on the lives of his students, friends, family, and children is legendary and evident from the letters we are receiving from around the world at the news of his death. After your song came out, I bought the music, went to visit dad in the Philippines, and 3 of us children sang your song to him.  We changed a few of the words a little to apply directly to him, but it didn't need much changing. He cried through the whole song, and it has been HIS song ever since.  At key occasions in his life, we have sung the song again to him, although it has become more difficult to sing it without crying.

At his funeral tomorrow, we are playing the video of one of those time that we sang this song to him.  It will be the last time.  We would sing it live except that we know we would never make it all the way through.  My family would like you to know what a powerful impact this one song of yours has had on our lives.  We are forever grateful.   "His blood runs through my instrument, and his song is in my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man.  I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band." ~ LuAnne Cadd

Wow what a thrill to get our computer up and running again and the first thing I checked was to see how you were doing and it is good news I let out a big yes and woke my little one.  I have loved your music from the get go and it gave me such strength through a very difficult time when I first heard all your songs and you have truly inspired now I have six children and they have come to know your music as well so you see how something as small as a mouth and some ears can change a life .  We love you and wish you well. Love ~   Deanna and Family in Langley, B.C. Canada

Several years ago, I was visiting a friend of mine who happened to live in Augusta, Georgia.  I supported him financially all through high school and most of his years in college. He never seemed to have any money. My friend is now a well accomplished eye surgeon in Augusta. He has always mentioned that I will never have to pay for golf when I visit. His appreciation for my years of sacrifice and support were blessed upon me one particular day while I was visiting. We had played golf and were heading home when he asked what I wanted to do that evening. Being from a small midwest town, the night life is very limited. He pulled out his cell phone and started making calls. To my disbelief, he mentioned that he could get tickets for a Dan Fogelberg concert that evening. He got the tickets, his treat, and took all of us to one the most life changing experiences I have ever encountered. The concert hall was small and we had great seats. Mr. Fogelberg was alone on the stage. No band, only his guitars and a reel to reel tape machine. The music he played touched me deeply. The songs so familiar. The lyrics were flowing through the audience, we all knew the words. We sang along, some of us better than others, but all feeling the emotion of the moment. We would look at each other and smile as the words flowed from our souls into that night. I always loved his music, but to see him in person, singing to us all, and only to me,  the life experience was beyond common words.

I pray Dan's health improves. We would be lessened without him with us. I pray he will play a concert again someday. I would love to take my children, so they could feel the way I felt, when listening to his songs. Dan's music moves me so. I hope to have the honor of seeing him again. Sincerely and with great respect and admiration ~ Brian Chapman

Dan, When I hear your music, it takes me right back to U-Mass Amherst when I was in college. I had the most heavenly view out my apartment window in South Hadley that overlooked the Holyoke Mountain Range. I would put on Home Free and play "To the Morning". This would make me feel that heaven and earth met right there at that spot! There were so many exquisitely beautiful places to experience there, and the soundtrack to it all was your music.  There were tons of us at U-Mass you loved your music and artistry. I'm so glad you're feeling better! Love ~ Fran Guerra

What a joy to read on your good news.  You and your wife have been in our prayers.  Your music has touched me since the day 30 years ago when my older brother let me hear your LP..  May the journey along the road  keep you getting better, staying safe, and the love between you and your wife keep growing strong as each day comes and goes. God Bless ~ Andrew Rios

Dear Dan,    Am thinking of you and your family again today and adding my prayers to those thousands whose lives you have touched with your music.  It seems as if you are turning the corner, and I am truly grateful. You have painted many pictures and created many memories for me with your music and lyrics--a true gift.  God bless you. ~ Sylvia Bower

I was fifteen the first time I heard Dan's voice & song, on Home Free.  He was little known then, yet his song(s) had become available to the Denver market. That was thirty-five years ago.  His song & guitar strike a chord  that elevates the soul, it did then, it still does. I've lost myself in Dan's  music, sometimes releasing all of the emotion within me.  In my  younger years emotions were so bent up and I did not know how to express, or release.  Sometimes a thousand tears, as I took the needle on the old 33  and replayed, again & again a song that provoked emotions that needed to be  vented. Other times were pure joy ... Red Rocks concerts, candles or singing at the top of my voice at a sing along. Gosh Dan, no wonder you have such a huge following & fans. Spirit gave you a voice and talent that has reached into the depths of our hearts and souls. I truly thank you for your enrichment of my life.  Special  blessings for you and your recovery.~ Lora

Dan ~ I am so thankful to read your letter explaining the good news regarding your recovery..  Your music has touched my life more than you will ever know.  Last week, my husband of 21 years received a suspicious pathology report with the threat of Malignant Lymphoma.  I know the fear you describe and as a result, he is getting a complete health profile including the PSA test you mentioned in your sermon.  "Longer" was the song of choice at our wedding with my brother-in-law (who is a tenor and has a great voice and also has your complete collection) playing acoustic and singing it.  I hope to be able to report to you our love will last "Longer" than the first 21 years due to healing. My prayers are with you for continued healing. With deepest thanks for touching my life with your gift ~ Rachel Hill

Dear Dan, I haven't been to your website for quite some time, and when I read about your diagnosis I was saddened, but pleased to hear the treatments are going well.  I've been a fan of yours since the beginning, and have attended many of your concerts over the years.  One of my favorite concerts was an outdoor venue on the Boston waterfront a number of years ago, when it was just you, a guitar and a piano; a truly memorable experience. Stay strong and good luck, Dan.  I hope you are able to continue making music for many more years to come. ~ Jim L.

I just want to say the personal letter that DF has posted on his Website is very encouraging news - so glad to hear he is upbeat and encouraged in his fight against this disease. One of my favorite Bible verses is Romans 8:28 which says "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."  It does not say that all "good" things work together, but that "all things" - which I believe includes "the good, the bad, and the ugly". DF is in my prayers - and I still look forward to seeing him back in the recording studio or stage very soon. In Jesus Christ ~ John Dougherty, Springfield, MO

Dear Dan the Man, I just had some tests done for the "c" I have (had),  and I had a dream the night before.  In the dream I wake up and think,  what do I have to do to save my life today, go here, go there?  and the  answer I got  was: nothing, you have been cured.  Who do you think said that? And that link to light the candles, I do all the time. I hope you are happy & take real good care of yourself, as your music is waiting  for you:) MY thoughts are filled with  visions of my wellness.  My heart feels the freedom that healing brings to  me & my body feels the tingle of perfect health, AND THAT I WISH FOR YOU,  MORE THAN ANYTHING! Love & Gratitude ~ Adrienne

Dear Dan, I remember a very cold evening a few years back in Minnesota.  I waited and waited outside for you to emerge from the theatre you just played in to meet you, to tell you what a joy your music has been in my life. Of course, when you stood in front of me, I could not find the right words to say.  You just looked at me with the most striking green eyes I have ever seen, shook my gloved hand, and graciously signed my ticket as I murmured something unintelligible.

I have since moved to England to live with a wonderful man and every now and then, pull out a cd of your music and remember a country I once lived in, a time when I was younger and carefree.  Your music brings it all flooding back; what a gift you have given me. I read your biography tonight on the web, don't even know why I looked it up.  And as I was about to leave the site, read about your cancer.  I do not know what to say except to tell you that you are an incredibly talented man, and although I will never have the pleasure of knowing you I feel such a remarkable closeness.  I too am an artist, a painter.  My children from my first marriage lived in Peoria.  And nothing, nothing can compare to nature and the ultimate beauty of it.   I wish you the best, I wish you peace and serenity, and most of all, I wish you total recovery. Thank you for your beauty and fellow artistry. ~ Jeanne Warren

My wife and I are elated to hear of your great progress. Like any life threatening illness, the respect of privacy is of course understood and I would like to thank you for taking time to send an update to your many fans. My father-in-law is currently dealing prostate problems and is in the process of diagnosis.

I had the privilege of seeing you in concert back in the late 90's when you did an acoustic show in Tampa, FL. I am in my late thirties and was a late bloomer to your music. My wife was already a big fan and I credit her with my exposure to many great artists, especially from the seventies and early eighties. Her favorite song is "To The Morning". It takes an artist of immense talent to carry a show without any accompaniment. I of course would love to have the opportunity to see you again if we are blessed. If not, all the best to you and your wife as you enjoy life outside of the music spotlight. In the mean time and for many years to come, we have your legacy of music to enjoy. God Bless ~ GL

Very glad to hear from you Dan.  We'll keep the good thoughts, prayers, etc. coming! ~ GSZ

I'm sitting here listening to your beautiful CD, thinking I would like to know more about you. I pulled up your website, read your bio and learned you were diagnosed with prostate cancer. I wish you the very best, and know that your music is truly a blessing. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Hi Dan! I hope this letter finds you well! I keep you in my prayers for continued good health and healing. It is at this time of the year that I find myself thinking of you most. I find myself always singing, "Old Tennessee." I lived in Nashville at the time you were first starting out there,(early 70's). I saw you perform at Belmont College auditorium,(I am pretty sure that was where you played, just you and another person on guitar). By the way you were great and I remember to this day how people around me were commenting on how good you were! I have always loved that song and when fall rolls around that song always come to mind and the words pass through my lips. I am always singing it!  Anyway, I just wanted to share that with you. Stay well and keep us informed on your progress!! Sincerely ~ Rita Marie

Dear Dan, I am very happy to hear that my favorite singer/songwriter is well on the way to recovery!  Thanks for updating us on your health.  You are without a doubt my all time favorite.  As a teen in the 70's, your albums were on my stereo and in my head all the time.  I think what I love the best, is when I am driving and one of your songs comes on and I am taken right back to that time and place in my life.  It's such a wonderful feeling.  Your music has touched my soul!  May you continue to recover and keep believing in the power of prayer.  All the best, Your 'Illinois Girl' ~ Deb Kirk, Crestwood, IL

Dan, I have been a big fan of you since I saw you perform with the Eagles in Springfield, Ill at the Armory. I have enjoyed you music all these 30+ years. I was so sorry to here about your ailment. I think of you often and pray that you will recover fully. I look forward to hearing from you musically in the future. Best of luck to you and your family. Sincerely ~ Tom Vitale, A good old boy from Illinois transplanted in Colorado since 1976

I have been a fan since Nether Lands. I wish you the best as you're a brilliant light in an otherwise dark world. Your lyrics and musicianship have long been an inspiration to me. Recover quickly and well my friend. ~ Matthew W. Huffman

Dan, You are one of my favorite singer/songwriters. I have been listening to you for years. One of my favorite albums is The Innocent Age. I just wanted to wish you well in your recovery. I hope you recover completely and return to your music. Best wishes ~ Tim Brasile

Hi Dan, I've been checking your website every once in a while the last year for word on how you were doing.  Thanks for the update.  I'm so glad to read that you're doing better.  I've been praying for you this last year.  Keep getting better.  I really love your music  and look forward to someday hearing you in concert again in Detroit. ~ Linda, Plymouth, Michigan

Hello Dan:   It was truly heartwarming to read your recent letter with the good news of your positive progress.  I've definitely had you in my thoughts and prayers, especially each time I'd hear one of your songs on the radio or on my CD player.  Your songs have always represented everything that's both positive and fulfilling to me about music and song, and I'm so grateful that the good Lord still has some plans for your life here with us.  I sure look forward to continued good news and, when the time is right, more of your wonderful music.  Thanks for giving all of us "a gift we never can repay".  Take care and God bless ~ Chris Boehmer, Orlando, Florida

I have been such a fan of yours ever since.....well.......the beginning! I am so glad to hear that you are doing well! May you continue to be blessed! From a loyal fan ~ Anita Middleton

Dan, Many prayers are being answered with your treatment success.  I can't tell you how much your music has added to my life.  It saw me through a painful divorce and helped me recognize true love.  I walked down the aisle to "To the Morning" and back up the aisle to "Ever On".  I never miss you when you come to Columbus Ohio.  I'm sure that you know that your talent as a songwriter is just as powerful as your talent as a musician and performer and I have no doubt that your creative juices are still flowing strong.  Perhaps a book of prose might be in the future? Always do whatever you need to keep yourself healthy and happy but continued updates to your fans would be greatly appreciated.  The world needs more outlooks like yours.  God's continued blessings and healing to you and your family. ~ Sheri M.

It was with great relief that I read how much better you're doing!  (Oh so glad!) A dear friend told me last year about your diagnosis and I, along with a million others, have been concerned and hoping for a rapid recovery to you.  Like all of the other wonderful folks whose letters I have been reading on your site, I, too, have been a fan for more than half my life now and just had to write and add my grateful thanks to the long list.  You have been an amazing influence on so many people- -reflecting back to us the majesty of the human spirit in your beautiful music.  You have been such a light to so many people, it is with great delight that so many of us now have the opportunity to give back our heartfelt thanks with prayers and positive thoughts to lighten your load and show the strength in the power of uniting together.  Thank you so much, Dan, for being an inspiration to so many. Godspeed to you and Jean both. Live long and prosper. Best Wishes always. ~ Lee Burns, NH native, ME transplant

Dear Dan, My family loves and appreciates you and your music.  We were startled when we learned of your health issue, but relieved when we read the letter you posted on your website.  Our thoughts and prayers will be with you from this day forward on your path to recovery.  We hope the future finds you well and blesses us with new music. God Bless You ~ Eusebio, Laura and Jessica Perez

Brother Dan, After months and months of daily praying, I am RELIEVED to hear the WONDERFUL news of your path towards healing!!  Amen!!  God does answer prayers!!  Wish I could give you a huge congratulatory hug right now!!  The thing I feel the most, as a fellow musician, is love and gratitude to you for your music and the positive spirit that flows forth from your vocals and instrumentation.  You are a very gifted man and I look forward to seeing you perform again someday.  I will continue to pray for continued blessings of health and happiness for you and Jean.  What else do we need, right? :) With love and thanks always... ~ Rob Beltz  :)

You are an amazing talent and an amazing legacy to the music and song writing world. I have seen you in concert on three occasions and each one is etched in my memory. Tales have resulted to my loved ones and family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time in your life. I hope and pray to hear from you again soon. Keep the creative juices and your obvious love for the music going. God speed and best wishes. Still in very hot summer land. ~ Mike Roberts, Birmingham, Al.

Louisiana was recently described as a phoenix coming up from the ashes of devastation.  Naturally, having been a fan of yours since Home Free, I thought of you and your music.  Your progress in battling cancer seems to have some parallel to the phoenix as well.  I have watched for news throughout the year of your status and am glad for the good report.  I live in Baton Rouge where Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have impacted our city some, our state greatly.  "Sweet Magnolia (and the Traveling Salesman)" has drifted through my mind during the ordeal. As I drove between Louisiana and Mississippi helping family members impacted by the storms, familiar tunes from your early albums were my traveling music.  They were chosen and packed for me by my daughters who also know the words to every song on the albums.  I pray that God will touch your life with His special comfort, strength, and continued healing.  Thank you for sharing your gift with us all. ~ Tricia Bauer

I am happy to hear that you and your family are doing well. Your music has been such a huge part of my life, some painful, some joyful, some thoughtful, all meaningful, that I couldn't bear to think it would ever be different. How selfish of me! Your music will be a part of my life as long as I live, and as long as there is anyone on the planet who listens to beautiful music. Please take care of yourself, as I know you will, and take the opportunity to love those around you-as I know you will. You and your family are in my thoughts. I will miss the idea of new music from you, but will cherish the great musical legacy you have given us all. Take care. I love you.

Dan, first I want to say that your music has touched my heart and soul for more years than I care to remember and I try not to miss a chance to experience your live shows.Your heartfelt advice on getting tested regularly is so important in halting this disease .I hope and pray that your battle will be won and that the music world will once again benefit from your amazing talents. ~  Gary, Denver Colo.

Hi Dan! I was devastated to hear of your diagnosis on the radio this am; and overjoyed when I read the letter on the web. I am a research nurse for the SELECT Clinical Trial with Vit E and Selenium in the US and Canada. I appreciate the sermon; men must be checked  by DRE and PSA monitored at minimal once a year, any rise in PSA greater than .75 should be followed up by a Urologist. Your continued recovery will be my prayer and that you and your wife may have peace knowing healing is taking place.

I have been a long time fan since the tender age of 15 ("Home Free"), now 47, I have weathered many storms with the comfort of your voice, lyrics and music. My greatest loss being of my Dad Jan. 21, 2005 and then my Mom Sept. 13, 2005. I cannot express to you the powerful memories associated with your music and the peace it continues to bring to me on a daily basis.  I have copies of everything you have ever released, my sister and I visit memory lane quite often.  The albums are worn, but still in great shape and I have replaced as many as possible with CD now. My prayer for you and your family: May God encase you in his divine light, protection, healing, and prosperity in each and every aspect of your life and living. With prayer and love ~ Tammy

I'm not much of a writer, but I just want to let you know that I am thrilled to hear you are doing well. Although I will miss looking forward to your next music compilation, I'm happy just knowing that you are keeping your options open. Take care. Love ~ Patty from New Hampshire

Hi Dan - I'm sure you've heard it before, but, I've been a life long fan. I'm writing to let you know that now, with the knowledge that you are doing well. When I was in college in the mid 70's I became a devoted fan and have been ever since. You and your music have had a big impact in my life. I've always thought of you as a friend. I spent several years in Montana, pursuing the dream of a mountain life style that I developed with the experience of your music. Although now back in my home of Ohio, the flame of freedom and love of life that you instilled in me all of those years ago still burns bright. The example of your life and your music has brought so many things to my life - how to love well, be open to life and not to be afraid of sentiment. I cannot express to you enough how much I wish for you a future of health, strength and happiness. You are such a gifted person - having made such a mark in so many people's lives - I promise you my prayers and positive thoughts. Thanks for the music - your friend ~ Matt.

Dear Dan- I just wanted to take a moment to wish you and your family the blessing of continued good health. Your Greatest Hits cd has been in perpetual rotation in my jeep as I travel back and forth to work, amazing how "Same Old Lang Syne" still makes me cry.....every single time!! Your music is beautiful and makes this working mom's world a more peaceful place.  Thank you. ~ Lynda McDowell

Dan, I cannot tell you how nice it was to see your letter posted to the website letting us know how you are doing.  My husband and I recently traveled to Maine for vacation and I kept hoping I would see you somewhere there on the street or in a shop and I knew exactly what I would say to you. I would have very quietly said to you "It's Maine and it's Autumn"....and you would know I knew who you were without saying anything else and that you would know how touching your lyrics are to so many.  Keep the spirit and keep getting well.  We miss you.  ~ Lori, Tampa, FL

A note to an "old friend " -- I have been praying for you throughout the past year and am glad for the progress you have made. As an RN , familiar with cancer treatment, I know it has not been without great personal sacrifice and cost to you and those who love you . I hope that music has helped your healing as much as your music has helped many of us through the years dealing with simple  growing  up/maturity issues progressing to the big stuff !  I was turned  on to your music in 1974/75 from my best friend with " Home Free" and we grew up "together" from that point .  Every album has touched me in some way as I (hopefully) matured from a simple school girl  crush to a true appreciation for what you do . I have had the pleasure of seeing you in person twice in my lifetime and your music is such an incredible gift to all who have the opportunity to hear it. I pray that your life is full and happy and your pains are small and short lived . I have also sent you  REIKI , a type of energy for healing as you go through your  treatment . May all men learn the value of early assessment for their health . Take care of you and yours. Peace ~ Karen H.Boyd

Great news!!! You and your family have been in our thoughts and prayers since we heard of your health challenges a while back.  As with countless  others, your music has touched our lives in such a wholesome, positive  way.  We reminisce often while listening to your music; it's timeless and  touching. Keep the faith; God continues to work miracles by the minute. Fondly ~ Carla Dowd

Dan and Jean, Thank heaven for your healing and for the unimaginable  flow of insight  yet to come. Your greatest and most important music has yet to be written believe it or not. Experiences like this have a way of focusing our soul on things that matter most - beyond the length of our natural sight as you know so well. Remember too my friend, that at those times when we feel God may be letting us down, He is actually lifting us higher than we can imagine. While cancer is  a terrible disease it may be the  best teacher you ever meet, if you are listening closely to the lessons. As your spirit aligns with the divinity within you, music will flow from you unlike anything you have ever written and I love your work  as much as anyone on the planet - and always will. You have a gift possessed by very very few. This  painful, terrifying experience has the power to focus that gift in ways you have never  thought possible. I pray you will  rise early with the sun and write out the thoughts of your soul. Let it  flow from your fingers like water and I suspect  the heavens will open unto you and bless us all through new music. I have always thought that one or two things would have to happen for your music to move to the next level. Either having a child, the most sacred experience you'll ever know or this kind of trial of  body and soul. This is your Phoenix experience my  friend. Never let it pass unheeded. Blessings unmeasured await you my friend. Rise up and receive  them. Pure divine intelligence is on the other side of this  experience if you have eyes to see and ears to hear. This I know for I am blind  and have come to see with new eyes in recent years, in part  through your reflections and beautiful music for which I will always be grateful. Press on my friend and may the road rise up to meet you and may your heart rejoice in song. You are never too old nor is it ever too late to receive these sacred gifts. Your friend always ~ Randy J. Gibbs

Hi, Dan & Jean.  Have always loved your music and was quite shocked when we heard of your prostate cancer.  My husband was diagnosed with Stage II prostate cancer in January of 2004. We opted for external beam radiation and partial Brakeytherapy seed implant which was done at the end of May, 2004.  So far his PSA is below 0!  He will be tested again in November. Our thoughts have always been with you; I asked my husband this morning if he had heard anything about your current condition - he hadn't but found your website and your news letter. It's great that you are doing so well!  Good luck to you; we will keep you in our thoughts. Fondly ~ Jeri & Marilyn Wert, Van Nuys, CA

Dear Dan, Time seems to rush by anymore.  So much of your music over the years has left such an indelible mark on significant events in my life.  It is easy to take for granted those people who express for us our hopes, dreams and wishes as life goes screaming by.  You crossed my mind today and I looked for you on the internet only to find that the last almost 16 months for you have been riddled with a battle of the most insidious. It breaks my heart.  I am happy to read that you are doing well and progressing with each passing day.  I caught an acoustic show in South Bend, IN a few years ago and came away with even more respect for you and your music.  I have been a fan for more years than I can seem to actually contemplate.  Another of my musical influences has been gone now 8 years in that terrible plane crash in Monterey Bay. John Denver and you seemed to be of like mind, incredible talent and wonderful heart.  Best wishes to you and yours.  I look forward to seeing you soon as I hope that going on tour is in your future again.  Good health, Dan, and a good life.~ Rik Burgoyne

Dear Dan...You have had a significant influence on me as I have grown up loving your music and spending great amounts of time seeing the world through your thoughts and words which you have so generously shared over the years.  It is still a joy to sit back and listen to The Innocent Age...beginning to end...and journey through the 'life cycle' so incredibly portrayed there...as well as remember where I was when I first heard so many of those songs.  I am excited and grateful to hear that you are doing so well in your fight against prostate cancer.  I will continue to pray.  May God continually be with you through this, and all, time. Sincerely ~ Clark

Hello, my name is Jon-Michael and I'm a huge fan of yours! I'm 30 years old. I write songs, poems and I paint! I adore your music. Trust God, your music brings everyone through hard times! Peace, and very best wishes! Love ~ Jon

Dan: My older brother left home for the 2nd time when I was 16 years old. (I'm now 43) He left behind all of his albums. I picked up Home Free one day and put it on the turn table. I have been a fan ever since. I have traveled many a time  to see you perform in Nashville and in Knoxville, Tennessee. Your music has  touched my life so profoundly. Thank you for your music!  My oldest son is named Daniel after you. I am so pleased to hear that you are feeling better. I wish for you continued good health for many years to come. I was looking at all of my old concert t-shirts and the Friends of  Fogelberg fan club newsletters the other day. (I'll never get rid of them). My  friend and I always dreamed of coming to Colorado and finding you, but at one of your concerts you said to keep your head low if anyone came on your property. So we decided that wasn't a good idea after all. Ha. Love you Dan. Take care.~ Melanie Palmer, Oak Ridge, TN

Dear Dan, First of all, our prayers are for your recovery.  Secondly, your music is as much a part of our lives as the blood that flows through our veins.  We've been married 22 years and "Longer" was played by a friend on acoustic guitar at our wedding. Anytime we hear your music, it's as if we're reliving some of our most precious moments. Though we've never met, you are a part of us. We thank God for your gift of music and lyrics and hope that you're soon on the mend. P.S.  One snowy day in the late 70's...your plane got delayed at Lubbock International.  My husband remembers you spent an hour or so at Texas Tech playing your songs just passing the time inside the university center court yard.  It's a fun memory. ~ Shannon and Veronica Young, Lubbock, TX

Hi Dan, What wonderful news!  It's an answer to our prayers.  I keep your CD's (and ONLY your CD's!) in my car, as a daily reminder to pray for you and Jean.  Thank you for sharing your news.and please keep us informed. Keep smiling, and know that you are loved by thousands of people who have been touched by your special gift of music. ~ Mary Foree, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin

I had not been aware of your struggle in the past few years, until a few days ago. You, your wife and your loved ones have since been in my thoughts and prayers. I too, desire to express to you Dan, my gratitude for your generous gifts to those fortunate to be exposed to your music and lyrics and wisdom. You have desired to make a difference with the great gifts you possess.  I'm so grateful that you have been given the opportunities to do just that.  What a beautiful mind and spirit shines through your musical work. You will continue to be in my thoughts and my prayers. ~ Colette Merrill

Hi Dan, I was just checking in again to see if there was any update on your health and I was so happy to see the great news that you recently posted. Growing up in Lincoln Nebraska in the 70's and not sure what or where my future might be headed, I listened to your albums (all of them up to that point, especially Nether Lands). and your beautiful and thoughtful lyrics (as did all my friends) and made decisions back then to take chances to change my life and surroundings not knowing which path would lead me where.  What I have discovered along the way is that life is a journey, not a destination and I am so happy that your music helped to show me the beginning of that road map..  I thank-you so sincerely for sharing your talent with the world, it meant so much to me when I was 19 and beyond..I wish you continued strength and encouragement in your fight against this cancer, I feel very strongly we'll be hearing from you again on a future CD, but for now enjoy your health victories and the love and warmth of your family and friends.. ~ Cyndi / Temecula, CA

Dan, Thank you for bravely sharing the update on your health with all of us who care for you so much.  Talk about the power of love!  All our best to you in your continuing battle with cancer.  You humbly remind us that every day is a gift to be treasured. ~ Lori in Oregon

Hey Dan, Where do I start?  Congratulations on your encouraging news.  I first heard about your illness last fall when there was a "Tribute to Dan Fogelberg" to benefit the American Cancer Society held in our town. After I read about the benefit, I immediately found your website and read about your prognosis.  I was devastated by the news, but when I read your statement saying that your prognosis had been greatly exaggerated, I knew you had the mindset to beat it - and look where you are now!   I have been a fan since 1974 when my husband was going to the University of Illinois in Champaign and he bought me a copy of your Home Free album. I was immediately hooked. I love "Wysteria" and many others from that album and all of the others.   I think the only albums I don't have are your live ones.  I am ordering the Christmas CD now.  I have to tell you, I bought your Full Circle CD about a month or so ago (after searching for 6 months to find it) and I think I have played it in my car every day since.  It reminds me so much of your early work, that's not to say I don't like your later albums - I love them all. They all seemed to speak to me with what was going on in my life at the time.  Don't know how you did it, but you did!   You said in your statement on your birthday, that you have no plans in the near future for songwriting or concerts, I can only hope that your Muse (again) takes you by the hand and leads you on a long journey of songwriting and that you possibly decide to record some of them for us, your faithful fans.  Perhaps there is or will be yet another song like "Drawing Pictures" that is yelling at you "hey, don't forget about me" and you'll have to release a CD just to get it to leave you alone. (HA! Hope you're laughing).  As a selfish fan who has never had the opportunity to see you in concert, I hope you decide to returning to touring. (You have to at least do a "Farewell Concert", or 2) Was that the Eagles that did that? Two Farewell tours?  (Your home town of Peoria would be good, or at the top of the State, say Rockford, would be a good choice.) Again, as a selfish fan, I hope you decide to continue to write songs, record and tour, but as a compassionate person, I understand and respect your decision to possibly not return to either.  I wish you a long, happy and healthy life surrounded by all of the people you love and cherish. I will keep you in my prayers for a full recovery.  Thank you for all of the wonderful music over all of these years. Gods Blessings to you. Happy Sailing!  Love ~ Nancy, Belvidere, Illinois.

I'm thanking the Universe that you, a most marvelous singer and touching songwriter, are with us still. I wish only good things for you and hope you will still continue to amaze us with your music.  Thank you Dan. ~ LuLu

Dear Dan & Jean, Thank you.  As a therapist working with clients struggling with emotional, and physical health issues, your sharing and your music have been very therapeutic.  In my personal life I have been supporting my sister through cancer.  She is doing better.  I finally took a weekend with my best friend of 26 years, who introduced me to your music in 1980.  We drove the Oregon coastline stopping at the lighthouses, listening to your music all along the way.  The one in Florence made me cry and release...so old and beautiful.   We sent you and your loved ones a prayer from there...  Lighthouses have become symbolic to me of being protected from crashing on the rocks of life, and letting me know where I am...  Lifehouses are what they truly are. May your lifehouse give you comfort with every drop of light. ~ Evonne, Eureka, CA

Dan, I am sending you more good wishes for a continued healing and a successful fight.  It has been a month and a half since your much awaited letter of success. I thank you for that.  It sure made all your fans happy. You have so many fans coming forth with good wishes and there are so many more who aren't online to do it, but I know they are all  still praying for you, just as we on here are doing daily. I have been a fan for so many years, I don't think I have missed many days of hearing a Dan song over the last 25 or so years.  I have played your music always with the hope that my children and now my grandchildren would always have it playing deep in their thoughts, so even though they went through the Rap and other musical styles, they would always revert back to the beauty of words and music intelligently done and beautifully sang. I believe my plan has worked perfectly, my granddaughter, (age 8) when asked who was her favorite musician, replied "Dan Fogelberg".

She was amazed the other children didn't recognize the name, and felt sad they were missing out, her favorite Dan song is "Wandering Shepherd". My 2 year old granddaughter rocks to "Down the Road/Mountain Pass". She never fails to request I play it for her, then she has to hear "Wake Up Mama"  ('Statesboro Blues')  LOL.   I have to thank you Dan for all these years of wonderful music, I have enjoyed your music in so many ways and now it is so special to be able to watch my grandchildren really loving and appreciating your amazing gifts. God Bless ~ Carol

Dan, I pray that your health continues to improve.  I keep you in my prayers.  I play music daily for comfort as I battle my illness. Your music is like a  trusted friend that gives me peace and joy.  From your first album to your  latest, the music is equally beautiful.  I just printed these lines and  hung them up in my home office to give me inspiration:  There's magic every moment, There's miracles each day.   You have given so much, I'm thankful that your recovery is well on the way. Love to you and your family ~ Dani Janich, Las Vegas, NV

Hi Dan - Glad to hear that you are doing better. I started having the exam a year ago & thankfully got a clean bill of health. I just wanted to let you know how much your music has meant to me over the years. Phoenix & The Innocent Age really got me interested in playing acoustic guitar as well as getting me through some rough times. I can still pop in any number of your cds & be transported to a particular place & time in my life. My prayers & best wishes go out to you & Jean. Thanks again for all you've given me ~ Arthur Warlick

Just wanted to wish you well and to let you know I've been a fan of your music since 1973. ~ Rick Wenzler

I'm very happy that Dan's health is getting better. I'm a fan from Mexico and I'll pray continuously hoping that Dan is in the record studio again and as we says down here "viviendo la vida de nuevo". Take Care. ~ Luis, Queretaro, Mexico.

Dear Dan:  I hope this greeting finds you feeling well today.  I can only offer you my thoughts and prayers and try to express how much the world needs you and your music.  I am thankful I am able to write to you after chemo and radiation for breast cancer in 2003/2004.  Blessings to you and your family. Happiness is morning and evening, daytime and night time too.  For happiness is anyone and anything at all that's loved by you. ~  Linda K. St. Louis, MO

I just read about your illness this evening. I was glad to here you are doing better. I have enjoyed your music since the 70's and was fortunate to be able to include your songs daily on my playlist ,when I worked in radio during the 80's. Best wishes for a full recovery and God bless.

Dear Mr Fogelberg, I have listened to your music and words for 30 years.  I am still moved and inspired.  As a teacher and a father, I try to share some of the inspiration you have given me over the years with my students and my children.  If you never tour again, your legacy is one which will live on as long people can hear and appreciate your music. Live long. ~ Jim Moore

Dan, My wife and I are very happy and relieved at your progress.  Thank God!  It would be "Hard To Say " good bye as your music has been an integral part of our lies for 30+ years.  We can only believe that your recovery is "Part Of The Plan" for inspiration in your songwriting.  As you travel "The Long Way " in your recovery, don't forget to "Run For The Roses " under the "Morning Sky" and always "Reach" for "The Power of God" (OK...so I took a little license on those last 2). Hope you can bring a concert to Tucson, AZ in the future!  Although it's a little small to handle the throngs that would come see you, the Tucson Music Hall ( would be a GREAT venue for your acoustic concerts). ~ Kelly & Sandy Galvin, Green Valley, AZ

I'm glad that your prognosis seems good.  Like you, my father is battling advanced prostate cancer so I can understand all the ups and downs that you must be facing.  Keep the faith and my thoughts and prayers are with you always.  Your music has touched my life in so many ways...I can't begin to tell you what you have meant to me over the years.  Good luck and God bless you.~ Robin Williams

Dan: I've spent most of this afternoon going through old music, and old memories. Among my treasures are your first three albums...they are the soundtrack to important and "big" times in my life. Going to college, falling in love, breaking up, second chances and new life...all to the words and music you poured out and crafted so skillfully and artfully. Thank you for that music that my memories are anchored to. I am also grateful for the way you reinvented yourself and your music. "The Reach" is an example of that, and a very powerful song for me. I'm grateful that you have good news; that's answered prayer. We've enjoyed your live concerts, videos, and albums. We'll treasure them, and you, for many years to come. God Bless. ~ Randy Gerdes - Tucson

Get well soon Dan, the music world needs your ballads ..

Hello Dan. I was so pleased and happy to read your note about the encouraging news on your condition. Ironically, I just received the results of my PSA yesterday and everything was normal. I keep praying for you and your family that you get well and can enjoy the rest of your blessed life regardless if you ever return to the stage. Godspeed Dan. ~ Gregory L. DeMaio, Lt Col, USAFR

Dan - I was relieved to read that you're doing better and hope it won't be too long before you can record again. Your "Innocent Age" album continues to inspire me after all these years. God bless you ~ Phil

Dan, I grew up on your music. There was no other music that had as much an effect on my life. I started playing the guitar when I was 5 and at 16 started buying every album of yours I could find. I started playing along, buying the song books and learning every song I could learn. I would pause and rewind tapes for hours just to learn the acoustic parts so I could play the songs I truly loved to listen to. I found out about your illness about 4 months ago while trying to find concert dates and was to say the least shocked. I would have never dreamed this would happen to you and can only imagine the shock that was sent through your world. I am now 42 and still to this day play your songs before any other and have even attempted writing songs due to a lot of inspiration from your style and sound. I truly hope that you can beat this completely and once again be able to make the music that so many of us love and live on. Best wishes to you and your family in this fight. ~ James L. Burt - Riverside, Ca.

Dear Dan, Your music and artistic impression has been a huge part of my life in the various phases of it (through good times and bad times).  I can honestly say that your music has saved my life, given me hope, inspired me, and consoled me.  In some of the lowest moments in my life and the hard physical (health) challenges that I have faced, you have given me hope when I was in a spiral of hopelessness.  You have also been a great part of my life during my happy periods as well.  Your music, your attitude, and your compassion have inspired me and touched my life in ways that you cannot comprehend.  You have blessed my life, and the lives of my family (wife & 4 kids) in ways that are difficult to explain here.  Thank you so much for being a shining example of things that are good in this world.  I wish there were some way that I could thank you or re-pay you for the blessings you have given me in my life, but I fear that any attempts would fall short of what you deserve.  Enjoy the simple pleasures in life, "make" the time to smell the roses and search for the positive in all things and hold on tight.  Please know that if there is anything that my family and I can do for you we will gladly do it.  In the meantime you have our prayers, support, and love. ~ Layne Robinette, Layton, Utah

Dear Dan: I have been listening to your music for over 25 years.  I can't express to you how much your music has touched my life over the years.  Your words have spoken to my heart in all kinds of ways.  Since I have a great love of the ocean, some of my favorite songs are "Sand and the Foam", and "The Reach."  There isn't a song that you have written and/or performed that I don't love.  I've seen you in concert in Indianapolis a few times - the most recent being at the Murat Theatre.  Your music has encouraged me during my darkest hours. My encouragement to you - I truly believe that God gives us challenges to test our faith, build our character, and give us an opportunity to pour our love to him.  I pray that this test has proven your belief in his mighty power and that your suffering has been eased by knowing that He is in control always. (Romans 8:28)

You have a strong inner spirit and passion that has long been illustrated in your music.  My hope and prayer for you is that you will receive God's blessings and that the song in your heart will be as inspirational as the songs you have placed in the hearts of others.  And, if you don't choose to make any more music, those of us who love you will listen to the years of music you have given us - and know that those songs came directly from your soul. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. May the road rise up to meet you. ~ Susie McConnell

Dear Dan (and family)... My sincerest prayers and thoughts are with you while you go through this current challenge you are facing.  You and your music have been on my mind lately for many reasons - which brought me to your site - to just today discover you have been sick.  I just felt compelled to contact you and let you know how much you and your music has meant to me and my family through the years.  Growing up it was my brother who introduced me to your music when I was probably when I was 12-13 (somewhere around 1981).  Been a fan since then...went backwards and stayed forward with your catalog over the years.  For me many of your songs are a part of the soundtrack of my life....just hearing certain songs bring me back to certain times. Whether it was"Part of the Plan" where I remember me and my brother sitting around together listing to the Casey Casem - American Top 40's together on Sunday mornings, or forward to "Lonely In Love" - where I old enough to be dealing with a (one sided) relationship at the time....(which worked out that I married her in the end!) :).

When I was in college, my brother was in a very serious car accident running between jobs, in which we almost lost him, he had to be airlifted out and was in a coma for 3 weeks.  Those weeks and years it took him to rehab - I can't tell you how much we listened to your music plus discovered during that time how much "To The Morning" meant to him as we were trying to get him out of the cloud his head was in from the accident.  From that point on, that song holds special meaning to me. I happen to work in this wacky "music business" been doing it for over 12 years now.  During that time I have had the fortune of meeting a few artists that have meant a lot to me over the years...you were one of them at one of your shows at Westbury Music Fair on Long Island.  You couldn't have been any nicer to me and my wife...it was brief and outside after the show (I know you signed my "Greetings From the West" album)...so it was around that time.

I was crushed to see the news of your illness, but also happy to read your post about how you are doing currently.  I know you don't know me, but to me it feels like a friend is sick...and I felt compelled to let you know that you are being thought of while you are on the road to recovery!  Marc Cohn once said to me - "Love the art, not the artist - and you will never be disappointed".  Meaning that as a fan of music, keep your expectations of some artists in check.  Obviously I have met some of those artists over the years who you wouldn't believe acted like they did.  Well meeting you was a treat, you were genuine and appreciative of your fans.  Makes you appreciate that what you do, you enjoy - and the music therefore speaks volumes. Thank you for that - thank you for the music.  Take care of yourself - and hopefully we will see you back at Westbury very soon! Sincerely ~ Chris W., Long Island, NY

Hey Dan & Jean, I just read about your illness. I'm late to hear, but we all hope the best for you Dan. After all...you have Jean. You're in WONDERFUL HANDS!!! Take care you two. ~ Steve Howaniec, Newark, Delaware.

Dan, I can't really express to you the importance that your music has had in my life.  I was listening to you way back in the Nether Lands days, BTW I still think that may be your finest song of all.  I proposed to my wife of 22 years now while at one of your concerts in Irvine Meadows.  We drove all the way up from San Diego, about 125 miles to see you.  It was worth every mile.  Since then my wife and I have seen you in concert 11 times and every one has been better than the previous, except that 1st when I proposed to my wife.

Eight years ago I developed a fatal disease and I was told that I had less than a few years to live.  They did 26 different surgeries on me but nothing has worked.  You were there with me during every single one of them.   I had my portable CD player with me and your CDs every time. Your music has always spoken very deeply to  me.  I've always told my wife that if I ever had been a rock musician I would have wanted to be you.  Your music is real poetry. I've also always told my wife that I thought of you as a friend.  Please, consider me a friend and get well, I know that I wish that I could. Your friend ~ Jim Yeatts

Dan, You are forever in our family's thoughts and prayers.....Life is a day to day journey that we all share. Your music is the bonus our hearts and souls receive. ~ Doris, Michael, Stuart & Happy (our dog)

Dear Dan, I was so relieved to see on your website that you've made such  progress! I've been listening to your music for almost 30 years now  and my sister and I attend your shows whenever you make it to Tampa  or Orlando, FL. While we'll miss going to the shows, I wish you  continued success in your health. May you live a long, healthy and  happy life. I can't thank you enough for the music! ~ Sandi Patiño

Dan, I met you in person for the first time in Indianapolis in June/July of 1997. I had just been released from the cancer surgery I had to have that February and spent almost 2 months in a hospital from it and the recurring post op staph infections. I was lucky enough to have you autograph my guitar and a few of my cd's after the show. Your music has touched my life in more ways than one. I grew up around the Peoria area as my Dad worked for Caterpillar. So being from Central Illinois and even knowing a couple of people that went to school w/ you, I have always felt a very distant connection. When I heard the news of your illness, I was very concerned about the possible loss of one who is a very major influence to several musicians and people from around the world. I was so lucky to see you and the band play in Peoria for your 30th anniversary tour and was able to have you autograph the poster you were selling. It is now framed and hanging in my living room proudly. My musical tastes have been heavily influenced by you, Harry Chapin, Nanci Griffith, the Eagles along w/ the 6 degrees of separation of the Southern California singers and songwriters that you were with or had influence upon. May your health be strong and soon the desire to record will return I hope. Be well.

This is to express gratitude to Dan and Jean.  It's my 51st birthday.  I am so delighted to be celebrating. Ten years ago when my birthday came 'round, my life was much darker and felt hopeless.  The most powerful thing that helped me pull myself back to delight with life has been Dan's music, lyrics, performances, and the life choices any fan would be aware of.  I am grateful that Dan and Jean are in the world, living their lives, giving of themselves that which the rest of us can revel in.  With deep gratitude, I celebrate! And I send love and light for the highest possible good in their lives and in mine.  Many blessings ~ Deann in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Dear Dan & family, I am an old and new fan from ITALY...I was a little girl when my older brother would listen to "Leader of the Band" and a couple of weeks ago, while watching TV, the notes of the song came to me like a storm...memories of my childhood in Pennsylvania came bursting in and the words of such a poetic song crossed my mind as if time and never passed. I searched all over and found your Very Best album and while listening to the songs I realized I have been a fan of yours since I was a child. Wanting to know more about your music and career I read about your health problems. I am happy to hear you are fighting against it with all your heart & soul, just the way your songs express your deepest feelings.... I am also happy to know that you are winning this battle. I wish you and your family all the love and support such as  your music has given to thousands and thousands of people all over the world. Good luck and Wonderful wishes. ~ Nancy Di Salvo, Palermo, Italy

I am so happy to hear your good news. I was almost afraid to visit your web site because it had been several months. In 1981, I began college at Emory University in Atlanta, and forged a friendship with a fraternity brother who remains my best friend to  this day. We spent many a night listening to your music and pondering  life's potential and travails. Listening to your music began my appreciation of singer songwriters,  which has gone on to include so many incredible artists, many of whom  I've had the pleasure of meeting. All this to say: thank you, thank you, thank you for setting me on  such a wonderful path as a listener. You've changed my life, and I  wish you nothing but health and joy through the rest of yours. ~ Stephen Curry, Birmingham, AL

I challenge anyone here to cite another popular artist who inspires the same level of loyalty and love that Dan does in his fans. It is so heartening for me to tune in here each week and see the good wishes and interesting stories pour in. In its eloquent simplicity, the site has kept hope for Dan alive, and continued the wonderful Fogelberg legacy. Thank you. Best wishes once again to Dan and Jean. I hope that this site has brought you comfort and solace during this time in your lives. ~ Angela from Pennsylvania

Dan:  I heard an old song on the radio yesterday and visited this site for the first time in a few months.  I am so happy to hear the news of your progress in fighting this disease.  I am a LONG time fan and miss your concert presence. Your Christmas album is already in my CD player. As always, thanks so much for your music and all the work you have put into it.  My best wishes to you and your family.  Please continue to get well.  I will be here pulling for you. ~ Shelly

Dan, I realize that many of your fans are sending you warm wishes and I realize that you are overwhelmed but you have been such an inspiration to me for over 30 years, I needed to send my warm wishes as well. I seem to not be fulfilled with the day unless I listen to at least one of your songs. My wife, who equally is a huge fan, sometimes reminds me of all the other incredible artists out there. I smile and continue to listen to your  music, throwing on a few other folks from time to time. The funny thing is that her Aunt went to HS with you back in Illinois, when she told me that 16 years ago I knew that I had found my soul mate. In all seriousness I am truly saddened to hear of your battle with  what seems to be an epidemic for many people today. The positive is that  medicine has come so far and so many more people are surviving cancer, my Mom has been cancer free for over 7 years now. I am glad to hear that you are  doing well and we will continue to send positive thoughts and prayers to our creator for your continued recovery. Thank you again for years of beautiful music, music that has been such a  vital part of our daily lives. Well, at least mine. Loved your concert when you came to Bend a few years back. ~ Sage; Bend, Oregon

Dear Dan & Jean, I just happened to check your website tonight & read your letter & the sermon. I am happy to hear your good news & I will continue to keep you both in my prayers for continued strength & healing. My husband & soulmate of 28 years turned 51 this summer (another Leo like yourself) & I will nag him to no end this week until he makes a doctor's appointment for a check up since it's been over a year since his last. I have been a fan since Home Free & will remain one always. Blessed be ~ Louanne Navoy

Hi Dan & Family, I have gone on this website many times since I heard of your diagnosis. I was slack for a while and didn't check in. Today I touched base and am so glad to see your letter from August ( yes, it's been a while since I looked last but you were always in my thoughts ). How happy you & your family must be to have come this far and had such success!  I am happy for you as well as  all of us who have been hoping for the best. Keep gettin' stronger dude! P.S. You look great in the recent photo!! ~ Pamela Hunter- Charlotte, NC

Dear Dan and Jean, I was so very happy to read your letter telling of the progress in treating your illness.  I know from personal experience that it's a hard road to follow, but one can never give up.  I believe that when it's time for us "to leave this mortal by" we will have already reached across that veil many  times.  Kinda like being afraid to ski down that vertical slope for the first time, but once you've seen how it works you get stoked.  You just take a leap of faith....

Music is the language of the universe - it touches all who experience it.  You have given us words to live by with all those lovely little tunes.  I, for one, feel that you've provided a score for the telling of my own tale here.  Things come to us that we least expect, I know.  There is magic in your music which you've given freely to all who would listen.  Take strength from the magic of prayer from those who love you and what you have shared.  I hope you will be well for years yet to come.  ~ Lindy Downs

Dear Dan.....I have been praying so hard, thanks so much for your letter letting all who love you and your music know that you are doing better. I will continue to pray and looking forward to when you will be well enough to record and maybe tour again. And yes you have touched many lives with your gift of music. Me being one of them. You got me through many a tough time in my life. It is because your music is real and comes from the heart. That is why it touches the heart of so many. God bless you Dan, and know that I will continue to pray for your health. Love ~ Annette F.

Dan - Every so often, I continue to re-visit this website and offer best wishes and thoughts to you and your  lovely wife. There is not much more to add even now, except for the notion that each time I visit this website, I come away from it - quite simply - in awe. It is amazing how many wonderful people from all corners of the world have been touched so deeply over the years by your music.  I can think of only a few contemporary artists who have had such a deep, emotional and  positive influence. Now it seems perfectly appropriate that you receive the emotion, feeling and love in return.   Whether you realize it or not, you gave the world just that over the years, even if not by design. "The love you take, is equal to the love you make" (McCartney; of course) rings true. You should be proud. God bless you, my friend. ~ GP

I was having a sleepless night and surfing the net when I discovered the Dan Fogelberg website and found out about your news.  I am so grateful that you are doing better, and my prayers will continue to be with you and your wife from now on.  Life is too short not to say thank you to those who have blessed you.....so, Dan, from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the way your music has been woven into the fabric of my life.  You will never know how much I treasure the hours I have spent listening to your beautiful voice and your powerful words.  God brought you into my life when I flipped on an obscure radio station in Fresno, CA, and heard "Nether Lands" for the first time.  That song took me away from a sad and scary home into a place where I could feel hope again.  Your music has been with me through first loves, marriage, heartbreak and healing.  I will be forever grateful, and I thank God for your gift to me.  Blessings upon you and prayers for your continued improvement. ~ Lisa Marie Crist

Dear Dan, I could never be so eloquent as some of the other writers here, but I want to let you know that I am elated after reading your letter. I have felt such a bond with you through your music that, when I heard of your illness, it was as if one of my own family members had fallen ill. I live in the high country of Arizona and it seems that, when the first snow flies, I always find myself singing"High Country Snows" to my wife as we watch the flakes fall outside our window. We tend to take for granted the simple pleasures in our lives until some earth-shattering event forces us to remember them and, sometimes, long for them. For what it's worth, one of my simple pleasures are the times when a line or verse from one of your incredible songs pops into my head at just the right moment and I am able to think to myself "so this is what Dan was singing about" .I wish you peace, my friend. You have given me a gift  ".. I never can repay". ~ Gary Phillip Holdcroft

I am pleased to hear that Dan's treatment is going so well and pray he will continue to improve.  I hope to see him perform if he starts touring again. One impact of a song could be when people remember lyrics of it.   I had enjoyed "Leader of the Band" when it came out, but hadn't thought about the song for some time.  Shortly after marrying his mother in 2004, I visited the apartment of my stepson and saw a picture of his great grandfather posing with the band he conducted in the early 20th century.  With my stepson being a music major, the lines, His blood runs thru my instrument, his song is in my soul instantly came to mind even though the young man had never met his great granddad.

About a year later, James Dobson quoted from that song, He earned his love thru discipline, a thundering velvet hand and also mentioned the stories of the road.  Dobson commented that visits by the singer to his aging father must have been joyous events.  After that, I had to look up the full lyrics and buy my own copy of the song. I wonder how many churches have used "Leader of the Band" on Father's Day.  It would work well. I hope people will continue to be touched by Dan's music for years to come. ~ Warren

Dan,  My wife and I are glad to hear that your are doing better, and wish you continued health. We have been big fans for thirty years now. Thanks for all the great memories. We choose "Only The Heart May Know" as our wedding song and everybody loved it. I have been getting a DRE test when I visit the doctor and so far I have a clean bill of health, but I realize the importance of getting it checked. Best wishes to you and your wife. ~ Dave in Colorado

Dear Dan, Just wanted you to be aware of our continued love and prayers for you and your family. Your gift of reassurance and direction to us was awesome. Please keep the faith and take comfort in knowing that you've touched so many lives throughout the years and continue to do so with your words/heart. Please keep us informed from time to time-- you're "family". Much Love ~ The Coscarelli Family

From one caregiver to another, Jean. While our loved ones need us, and we're important to their well being, their medical care and in part, responsible for their treatment and success in it, take regular time out for you. My father was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (blood plasma cancer) and the timing of his diagnosis and treatments have all paralleled Dan's diagnosis and treatment.  While there is no cure for MM, the current treatments he's on, has arrested the advancement of this horrible disease and he has gained weight and feels better daily.  The doctors tell me that it's possible that something like the flu or pneumonia, will kill him and not the cancer, as it effects his immune system. Dad lives with me.  My support system in this, is a cousin who is caring for her mom, (dad's sister) and we regularly catch breakfast or go with our husbands for dinner.  This is tremendously helpful. While I've adored and admired Dan and his talent for many years, (seen him in concert twice), my heart goes out to you at this time.  Hang in there and know there are many of us out here who are with you in this. My thoughts and prayers are with you both at this time.

I grew up on your music, Dan (thanks to my parents).  I remember always having a Dan Fogelberg record or tape in the house!  Years later (I am now 27), I picked up a "Greatest Hits" CD and started listening to you again. Your song "Longer" will most definitely be played at my future wedding (not planned, yet!).  Your lyrics are beautiful; your voice, hypnotic.  May God bless a great poet. Love ~ Emily E. Wenzel   Minneapolis, MN

I am so thrilled to hear of your great and uplifting news! I continue to pray for your health and as always, continue to listen to your incredible music as I have been since 1976. You can't imagine how much your music has touched me and been a part of my life for these past many years. Also, I thank you for sending out your message to everyone reminding us all of the importance of those tests which have saved so many lives. Best of life and health to you and your family ~ Kathy Yost, Pont Vedra Beach,Fl

Dear Mr. Fogelberg, We were so grateful to find this place where we could send you a personal note.  We heard a few months ago about your illness and we have been checking your website frequently for updates.  You are in our prayers and we hope you continue your progress in your fight for health. We have been fans of yours for many, many years and your songs have been important companions to us during good times and bad.  When we listen to your albums, we hear the soundtrack to our lives.  We look forward to your being well again and sharing more of your gifts with us.  All we can give you is the gift of gratitude. With love and prayers ~ Kathy and Tim Champagne, Holyoke, MA

Dan: Just a quick "best wishes" from a long-time fan.....Surprise, we share the same birthday, which I didn't know until I found your website today. Anyway, from deep in the Heart of South Texas, a sincere wish for your continued recovery and best to your family and close friends, for their hearts carry the most tender and personal weight of your struggle. Your music has always had a special place in my life.  Music to feel and words to think about. Thanks so much for those gifts. As I find myself, "changing horses in the middle of a stream", leaving a marriage behind and moving to Canada soon to continue the "good fight", in trying to keep those who would harm our country and people out (I'm an officer with US Customs and Border Protection)..hope that doesn't sound too corny...but it's a very real world out there these days....I'll remember to include you in my prayers. Again, Best Wishes and a Big Abraso (a big hug en espanol) from a friend down on the Border ~ Sean

It is somewhat ironic that I fall across your illness when trying to find something so positive! We have a National radio show where you the listener can e-mail their 20-30 choices of songs to them and they play if you are lucky with your selection. I have been searching the good old internet trying to find the Dan F song that I remembered from years ago. I found them -- "Leader of the Band" (of course) and "Longer." I do wish you and your family the best. I have not played one of your records for probably over a decade but am sitting here with all of you. I knew which song I wanted for my selection for the radio show and 'Longer' was the one I chose.  That somehow now fits! Good luck and if you're ever in England, well you know.....~ Chris Hartley

Dan, for many years you have brought great beautiful joy into my life with your music. Thank you. May God bless you with his love throughout your life. ~  Janet Aubut, Vermont

Back in the 70's and 80's, I was growing up in an extremely abusive home.  There was very little comfort for me.  One of the few comforts I did have was my Dan Fogelberg albums.  I played them over and over.  Even today, I can play certain songs and feel like I did back then, but the negativity goes away quickly and is replaced by the true pleasure I felt from listening to Dan and his creative gifts.  Thank you, Dan, for helping a hope-deprived teenager survive to be the middle-aged person I am now.  Fifteen years ago, my husband and I had "Longer" sung at our wedding, and now our two children are fans of your music, too.  I owe you many happy thoughts, and I've prayed for your continued recovery.  I know it sounds funny to say I love you to someone I've never met, but I do love what you've done for me and countless others over the years.  All good wishes to you.  ~ Just a fan in the South

Hi Dan, As I packed this morning in preparation for moving from Colorado Springs to Littleton and watched the snow fall outside, I was listening to the first disk of your Portrait boxed set and got to thinking about you. Your music has been with me since I was 11 years old, living in Salt Lake City, and listening to "Same Old Lang Syne" on the radio.  I managed to catch you at Red Rocks for your "Exiles" tour as well. Boy, I wish I had a recording of that show.  Fantastic! Thank you for your music.  It must be an unbelievable feeling knowing you've touched so many people.  Your more rockin' songs have lifted me up and improved my days and your more solemn stuff has consoled me.  Music is certainly a language all its own that can touch everyone.

I was also shocked to hear a while back that you have prostate cancer and am glad to hear that it's slowed down quite a bit.  We, your fans, are always here for you, with moral support or whatever, whether you return to the stage/studio or not.  You've already touched so many lives. Thanks again for sharing and may your fight against cancer go well. ~ Craig Maxwell

Dan, As so many others, I have enjoyed your music for decades.  I met my husband listening to "Leader of the Band".  Your inspiring lyrics and creative tunes speak from the heart, and your talents are a true gift to us all.  Being a nurse, I have had the fortune to spend time with others who have demonstrated courageous spirit in the face of adversity.  May your journey to good health be swift and your blessings plentiful. Thoughts of strength and love to you and your adorable wife ~ Marcia Reynolds

Dearest  Dan, It was so wonderful to hear  from you on your birthday. I had a feeling you would do that. I am so happy that  "things" are at a stand still now. That is good!!!!! My prayers and thoughts of  you and Jean are not at a stand still. I hold you very close in my heart  and I continue to pray for you daily. When you pop into my mind, I  know it is then that you need a prayer.  I really do miss you and my heart  is aching to hear and see you again. Let's shoot For Red Rocks 2006! All things  are possible through GOD! Much Love and Hope to you! ~ Laura Boughner Va.

Daniel, Thank you for the decades of singing my life.  Godspeed in your recovery.  Dad died of this cancer in 2002, a month before the "baby" my wife was carrying was identified as identical twins, and I think Dad had something to do with that!  I've battled prostate difficulties for years, so I can feel a little of what you are going through.  I've also played almost every one of your songs (really) in clubs from Maine to Virginia to North Carolina and Florida, and my voice has mistakenly been identified as yours more than once.  I'm nearly 50, I've been through divorce, a father's death, and have experienced the grace and forgiveness of God in my life, almost every day!  You have meant so much to me, and I truly thank you, and pray for your health and heart.  ~ Wendell Thorne,  Bradenton, Florida

Hello, and a belated happy birthday to you, Dan!!!!  I enjoyed reading your update and I'm SO glad to hear the good news for you.  I've been a huge fan of yours since 1974;  my 22-year-old son just recently discovered your music, too, and he also enjoys it immensely.  I told him that you were the first performer he ever heard in concert, since I was pregnant with him when I saw your acoustic concert at Moby Gym at CSU in 1982, and he just smiled.  I'm listening to your "Full Circle" CD as I type this, and it sounds just as good as any other album you ever did (and I have all of those, too).  I send you continued good wishes and healing white light...keep hanging in there and keep getting better and better.  Take care, and be well! Love ~ PJ in Fort Collins

Dan, May God bless that gift of joining us all in our tributes to you. May God bless you in your gift to us, your gift of words and music. I´ve been reading some of the most beautiful and profound letters, on this brilliant web site, over the past year and it´s amazing how you have touched so many. I was truly delighted when I read about the "positive news" on you condition and I sincerely believe your best is yet to come, even do I know you want to take a "time out" from recording, writing and performing. You take your "time out" mister as you have truly earned it. We will always be about.

I´ve been a fan since ´ 81 and and I´ve so many favorites but I go for the one that introduced me to your gift and that was "The Leader Of The Band". That was your international hit as I was then a kid living in Cork, Ireland. I now live in Seville, Spain and "Full Circle" is a throw back to the "Home Free" days, "To The Morning" is for me a brilliant way to start off my day.My girlfriend/partner, of nine years, Mo, comes from here (in Seville) and she too is touched by your music. "Longer" for us is our favorite and "A Cry In A Forest" is Mo´s favourite.

Last week we were down in the Algarve, south Portugal (for anyone who is not familiar with the geography of southern Europe, that´s about 240km from Seville) for Mo´s 35th birthday and we had, beach, palm trees, wine, love and your music. Dan, it´s truly amazing how such a humbled artist who doesn´t seek publicity has a made a massive impact internationally. I come from a country (Ireland) and now live in a country (Spain) where music is appreciated. My favorite artists are U2, Christy Moore, Paul Brady,Enya,The Chieftans,Paco De Lucia and Carlos Nuñuz but every day doesn´t go by without a Fogelberg CD being played. You are truely "The Leader Of The Band".You are my favorite, without doubt. Keep your health and let´s hope it will not be too long before we hear another classic from you. Let it shine again one day. From a humbled fan ~ Johnny "B" Good in Seville, Spain.

For some reason, autumn in Utah makes me nostalgic and throws me into a Dan Fogelberg mood. I've been playing your music all week and am currently watching your video "Greetings from the West." I decided to do an internet search to see if there was more in the way of music videos. (You had an MTV one of "Power of Gold" and one from the "High Country Snows" album.) Anyway, I was horrified to find out that you were diagnosed with this horrible condition. You are my favorite male singer/songwriter--have been since my first love introduced me to your music clear back when "Longer" was at the top of the charts. Your lyrics are incredible--I wish more people wrote like you! There's something about you and your work that can't be put into words. You are truly talented and just all around incredible! Please conquer this disease so you can continue to give us the music that makes us glad we're alive. (How's that for selfish!) ~ Shellie Lott

Dear Dan and family, I am a huge fan of yours and have been for the past 25 years. (In fact my 8 yr-old daughter asked me the other day who my favorite musician was and your name was the top of my list.) Your music has been such a huge part of my life and brings such joy. I was so pleased to read your posting that you are feeling better and your prognosis is positive. Blessings to you and your family as you continue on your journey. Sending wishes for continued good health. Thanks for all your music.~ Stephanie Teig, Plymouth, MN

Dan, Back in high school in the 70's, I was a fan of  John Denver... my drum teacher told me that Dan Fogelberg was the John Denver  for GROWN UPS.  Well, he was right, and you had me from the first song I heard, "Illinois."  To speak in music of your deepest thoughts and feelings  with the beauty that you have brought to them over the years has never failed to amaze me. I began writing when i was a teenager, and although I've never tried to go anywhere with it, I know that music healed my deepest wounds, whether it was  writing my own or listening to that of others.  You have my deepest  gratitude for all that you've given me with yours, and my thoughts and prayers  will be with you and Jean as you continue this journey to complete recovery from  this disease.  Again, thanks so very much for just being. ~ Cat

Dan, So glad to hear of your much improved health. Prayer and positive energy does work. How fitting that your latest work should be called "Full Circle", after all you have given to us we can now give back to you. I volunteer regularly for the ACS and have worked with many survivors, as much as an influence someone like Lance Armstrong is, I feel that someone stricken with cancer who gets up every morning and goes to work or school or their daily business is just as much of a hero to me -as you are also -to me and countless others.

Dan, I was soo saddened to find out about your illness, but I am glad you are in such good spirits and things are going well. You have touched my life so much with your music over the years and that my prayers and love are with you and your family at this time. You are such a blessing to this world thru you heart and your beautiful words and music. I wish you all the best and am praying for you daily. Love ~ Jacque Thomas, New York

Almost a quarter of a century ago, I heard "The Reach" for the very first time. Having to live a wee bit far from the sea, the song has always been my way of re-connecting with the ocean. All I need do, is put that track on the CD player, close my eyes and I can feel the motion of a ship under me, smell the sea and the ocean air and it is like being home. For that, Dan Fogelberg, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. My best wishes and prayers from myself and my wife here in Scotland for your continued recovery from your illness, to you and your family. I do not know to which God you pray, but may he answer you and keep you safe in the palm of his hand. In our thoughts. ~ Mark and Ally Entwistle, Stichill, Kelso, Scotland.

Dan and family - my father has been living with prostate cancer for many years now - and he's 87 years old. The one thing he said to me (and I don't really know how true this is) which has really stuck with me is "You don't die FROM prostate cancer, you die WITH it."  He's a living testament to that and he's hardly slowed down at all. You have a long career ahead of you yet and I know that there are thousands of folks anxiously awaiting your return to music. In the meantime, enjoy your family, enjoy your friends, enjoy Life.  Bill Quinlan - Producing Director, Harvest Theatre of Toledo - Toledo, Ohio

Hi Dan,  I was so blown away when I heard you were going to be treated for PC! Just wanted to keep you in my thoughts and prayers, Still will turn up your songs when they come on the Radio, and sing along :O) God Bless you in your recovery, and know too your music still gets me through the hard times, I hope it will for you in your recovery. ~ Cindi W

Dan - I don't remember the day I first heard your amazing voice, but it was early in my childhood (early 80's). My step-dad introduced me to your music, as he taught me all about the GOOD music. Your voice, your music has carried me through many a hardship, and has played through many tears. There is something about you that rings so true and I know that you feel and believe everything you sing. As I listened to "Leader of the Band" (3 times in a row...) on my ipod this morning, tears streaked down my face as I remembered a simpler time in my life and more importantly, the world. I moved to Colorado 6 years ago to make a better life and the line "And I'm in Colorado, when I'm not in some hotel..." always makes me smile.

You are a Living legacy. Your music, your life - you shine for so many. I am sorry that you got sick and I know that through your strength and faith you will get better. I want to thank you for sharing your gift. I know for a fact I would have never made it through my first heart break in college, had I not had your greatest hits. You are an amazing human being. All my love and best wishes ~ Robin

Dan and Jean   - While running with my iPod today, so many of your songs came up. It was curious, so I checked your Web site to make sure you were accepting/receiving/sucking in/pulling all positive energy that's been sent your way. I was thrilled to read that treatment is working. I might have written this before, but my advice to those moving through cancer is, first and foremost, to decide that you'll make it through. (Six year ovarian cancer survivor here) And obviously you are embracing that visual. Hooray!!! Seeing the life and seeing the breath and receiving the life and believing the breath and drawing everything good and wonderful into you that is being sent your way by all of your angels and all of ours...well, you'll be here a very long time. In love and faith to you both ~ Karen Meyer, Denver

To Dan and his family, God Bless you all! My sister and I have been fans of your music for years. You and your music have been there for marriages, births, divorces, and now we are sharing your music with the next generation. When my sister was going through a divorce, she did not want to get out of bed and was taking it so hard, when perusing through D.F. tunes, I came across "Morning Sky" Needless to say, she rousted out of the divorce bed and tuned back into life! I can only pray for your full recovery and a total healing for you and your family. Selfishly, I am also praying for another concert tour so that I may share that experience with my three sons and my three nephews. Thank you for all that you have given. ~ Clan Hulihan

Every Sunday I look through the Los  Angeles Times...when's the next concert. But I know health and medical stuff all come first as I am also at that age.  Still love all of  your music and your sense of life.  You are one awesome guy. God Bless you and Jean.

Dear Dan, I am so happy and relieved to read that you are in a positive direction regarding your battle.  I have been your number one fan (as millions of others have been!) since the early 70s. Your music means more to me than any other musician and I have followed you faithfully.  I saw you at Red Rocks many times while I resided in Colorado.  I used to yell to the canyons to hear my voice echoing...are you out there Dan Fogelberg?!?...ha   Anyway, now I am on the east coast and believe you have been around here too.  I pray you are through the toughest part and continue to get better and stronger. You are a wonderful soul and  your words of all your songs tell that.  I wish you and yours the best and hope to see/hear you with new stuff when the time is right. Love ~ Annie

My thoughts and prayers go to you and your family.  After the update at your web site, I will now schedule that exam I have been dreading.  Thanks for the great advice, your music and words fill our home .  Take care. Stay strong!

Dan, From the Netherlands, I am pleased to hear that you are doing better. It's also good to know that so many people have thought or prayed for you. God is good, don't forget that, even though we don't always understand His Ways. In the meantime I keep enjoying your music and play it myself. ~ Ruud Coolen, the Hague, the Netherlands

Dear Mr. Fogelberg: I have been a fan of yours since I was a kid, growing up in El Salvador.  My father was born in the U.S. and listened to American music, most of it being yours.  When I listen to your music, I think of my father, who died in a car accident, and I think of all the wonderful memories of my happy childhood in Central America, which had touches of my "gringo" side of the family.  It's a great feeling to close my eyes and listen to you and be transported back to such a happy time. I am thrilled to hear your cancer treatment is going well.  And I'm glad you've posted a "sermon" to other men about getting medical checkups.  You are not only a joy to listen to, but an inspiration to follow.  I wish you and your family all the best.  I'm glad you're taking time off for yourself and your loved ones.  Maybe one day you'll go back on tour, but if you don't, I'm grateful for the music you've provided us and I'm happy that you will take time off for yourself. All my best to you and be well. ~ Melanie Wagner (now in Florida)

Dan,  Thank you for the music, and now for your courage.  I have been, and will continue to pray for you and Jean.  Your music has brought me many moments of enjoyment and reflection.  I hope my prays bring you healing, peace, and the fullness of God's goodness and grace.  Listening, Thinking & Learning ~ Keith Ringwood, IL

Dear Dan: I am so relieved to finally hear news about your health, and GOOD news at that!!  I have loved your music since I first heard you in 1974.  I am so happy you are doing well and will continue to pray for you, your wife and family.  I am a nurse and see the toll this can take on families.  Once again, I am thrilled and relieved to hear you are doing  well. ~ Angel

Dear Dan, My prayers and thoughts of complete and total healing are with you and your family today-please know that you will get through this and be stronger from it! My father did and you will too! Hope to see you at Bass Hall in Ft Worth again soon! God bless you today and everyday ~ Dani Morriss

Dear Dan, I have always loved your music... In 1994, I walked down the aisle to the song "Longer", my husband and I saw you in 1991 in Buffalo NY and again in 2003 in Raleigh NC. I was very inspired to write you when I read your current letter. My husband is a twice Prostate Ca survivor, in 2000 he had a check up and his PSA was 3.2, along with an exam the Dr. did a biopsy, it was cancer ... his gleason score wasn't bad but we decided for the total prostatectomy, during surgery the Dr. had determined the cancer had already spread to the urethra and had more extensive surgery than first thought. In 2003 his PSA went back up so he needed chemo and radiation... his PSA is never at 0 still but they are monitoring it, every three months gets very stressful in our house. We know what you and Jean are experiencing and feel very strongly that things will progress in a positive note, it sounds like they have gotten a good handle on the disease for you and that is such a blessing. When you are faced with a life threatening illness it gives you such a different perspective on life. We treasure the time we have together. We will keep you both in our prayers and thoughts and may some day our paths shall cross. You are a very talented writer and performer and it will be very enlightening experience if we could meet you some day. It is encouraging to see that Prostate Cancer treatment has come a long way and hopefully they will get even further with its cure. With much encouraging words, a fan for life...~ Pat Cox

Dear Dan, I have just read your letter of August 13th and am pleased to hear your positive news.  I only discovered recently of your illness when it was mentioned on Radio 2 here in the UK. I just wanted to thank you for the many years and hours of enjoyment your music has given me.  I first discovered you in the Summer of 1980 when "Longer" made the UK charts. I loved that song so much that when I saw your Home Free album I had to buy it.  I loved every track of Home Free and have over the years acquired all your albums, my favourite being Nether Lands.  You and I sound great singing along together, wherever, in the car, in the bath and in the kitchen!  My husband and children (age 11 and 14) are also fans and can join in most songs.  One or other of your CD's is always in my car and we often sing along as a family.  One of my ambitions for many years has been to see you in concert so please, please hurry up and get well.  Good Luck and I'm thinking about you and hoping to hear more positive news in the near future. Fondest regards ~ Topsy Stedman  - Worthing, West Sussex. England.

Dear Dan - Thank you for sharing your gift and talent with us through the years.  You are so blessed to be able to create such beautiful music and lyrics that express your feelings and thoughts.  We are so blessed because you chose to share it with the world. I hope one day to share some time with you. Good luck. God Bless. ~ Jeff D. - Cleveland, OH

Dear Mr. Fogelberg; I am writing to you from Middletown, Ohio. I just wanted to tell you that I have had a personal connection with your "Run For The Roses" song all my life. I never knew why I would cry when I heard it but as of late I found out. You see, I have been recovering from a rear-end car crash. I was hit from behind while I was sitting still, he was traveling over 50 mph. I had extensive head, neck and back injuries. This happened February 10, 2003. Your music reaches a place in my heart that no other can. I was a small girl of only 6 years old when I first heard your music. My mother used to listen to you all the time. I am 37 years old now, and with the  45 record of "Run For The Roses playing in the background as I write this to you, my "Run for the Roses is at hand "It's high time I joined in the dance." I just want to tell you that you give me inspiration and strength to fight the battles I thought I would never have to. You give me the encouragement to be creative and most importantly live with a purpose. You truly are incredible. Thank you for being you and making music that even as a child I connected with and will continue to enjoy. Sincerely ~ Julie Rae Davidson

My Dearest Dan, I cannot tell you how much you and your music have meant to me over the years. My sister and I discovered you in a pile of albums a friend gave us from radio play. We liked the look of the self portrait and when we listened to to lyrics and melodies...we have been constant, loyal fans through the years. I can't tell you how many days started with "To The Morning". We actually grew up with you. I am now 53 and just lost both parents but I still have you. I am glad that you have completed the 14 months of treatment with love in your life and faith in your heart . Please know that many thoughts and prayers are with you and how very much you are loved.....particularly by this minstrel. All the best ~ Nancy Billings

Hey Dan, Today I was made aware for the first time of your illness and was deeply saddened. Then, given the link to your website I read your letter and was encouraged to learn of your progress and will include you in my prayers along with others I know who are currently undergoing cancer treatment as well. As you now know from experience, the road to wellness is not an easy one. May God bless you with His love, comfort and strength in this journey. My life has been enriched by the artistry of your music since my days back in high school in the early 70's. I remember hearing your music being played in the background of a coffee house and after finding out who this new artist was, I went into the record store down the street and came out with the debut album "Home Free" and became a fan. I too am an Illinois native and attended many a concert here when your tours brought you to Chicago. Your performance at the Chicago Auditorium Theater when "Nether Lands" was your latest release, will always be the best remembered. Your music has remained in the background of both my husband's life and mine and some songs were lullabies to our 2 children (lots of years ago now!) when they were babies. Stay strong in your journey Dan! ~ Susan Gage, Wheaton, IL.

Dan, Cancer - such a devastating disease and more of us every day are diagnosed and so many do not make it through the fight.  I lost my dad, a nonsmoker, to lung cancer 5 years ago and just 4 months after his death I too was diagnosed with cancer.  It is only now that I realize how miraculous it really is to survive cancer.  I am so glad you too are winning the battle and appreciate the true miracle it is to get this second chance on life. My prayers and good thoughts are with you and your family and hopes for a clean bill of health. ~ Ann Lehner

Dear Dan, I was very relieved to hear the encouraging news that you have sent to me and every other loyal and loving fan of yours! I hope this news continues to only get better for you and yours. You are not just a recording artist to me but a very large part of my life and have been since I first saw and heard you too many years ago on a PBS show which I believe was Soundstage. "Longer" was my wife and my wedding song 25 years ago. I have also dedicated "Ever On" and "Don't Lose Heart" to my daughters for their sweet sixteen parties. As every one else has constantly told you your words and music are all connected to us in our lives somehow. To me there has never been a better lyricist. I have seen you many times in person and every show was a standout, whether solo acoustical or with your wonderful band of top musicians. (Bread is my favorite group of all time so it was always great to see Mike Botts). I will continue listening to your music forever because there is nothing like it. I am going to get a little selfish now but I do hope I get to see you in concert again in the not-so-distant future but if I don't I it will be a small sacrifice to pay to just know that you are well because that is what is most important. My best wishes to  you once again and I will check the websites frequently to check up on you. Whatever happens to any of us in our journey through time happens because it is all just "Part of the Plan". Good Luck, Best Wishes, Stay Well. Yours Truly, Friend and Fan ~ Lenny, N.Y.

Good evening, Dan from Birmingham, AL...I'm 45 years old and have followed your career since the '70s...I had the incredible honor of seeing your tour over 20 years ago in Huntsville, AL...you were fresh off the "Windows and Walls" lp and were on an "acoustical" tour, just you, a guitar and piano...I have to say it was one of the most memorable nights of my life!  Your music has meant so much to me over the years, I couldn't begin to repay...but I can make it a point to lift you and your family in my prayers.  I read your August 2005 letter and praise the Lord at the great news!  I can't imagine how relieved you must feel, though it's tempered I'm sure.  Please know you have a huge fan here in the Deep South that will pray for you, that God's will be done in your life.  Hopefully it won't be too long before we get to hear some new Fogelberg tunes, heck even the old ones would be fantastic! Take care and may God continue to bless you and Jean! ~ Howard Green

Dan and Jean, It was wonderful to read the news of your progress in combating cancer! Your music has meant so much to me over the years, it's not only enjoyable and creative, but therapeutic. Just last Friday, I shared "Reach Haven Post Card" with my high school English classes. It was a beautiful fall morning in Southwest Virginia, and the literary elements you include made for a great start to the lessons. Today, we listened to the first line of "Whispers in the Wind." The students are reading excerpts from Dante, and when they got to the word "wraith," they were not sure what it was. We listened to your song, and understood how "wraith" is a synonym of "ghost." Your music has made lessons about literary elements come alive for my students, and I thank you for that, too. I wish you continued progress and health! Sincerely ~ Bonnie Sumner, Christiansburg, VA

Dan, I've just taken a look at all the letters written to you from fans all over the world. I will add my name to the thousands of well wishers, praying for your continued recovery. I don't have the words to adequately convey my feelings toward your music. Your lyrics and melodies have inspired me and helped me through some dark times. You've heard that a lot lately, but you should know the power of your gift to heal people. Thanks for helping us all. ~ Barry

Dan, so many of us love you and your music. We share your sentiments and tears. Thank you for the beauty through the years. ~ AC Knoblock,Clarksville, TN

Prayers and Best Wishes ~ Debbie

Dear Dan:  As some other people have said they have just found out about your illness, I too have just found out about your struggle.  My wife and I would like to add our best wishes and sincere hopes that you will be around a great deal longer to enjoy the experience of life.  In many of your songs over the years you have sung about your father and brothers and how you love them, well for many of us that also is how we feel about you and your music. Your music has provided insight into what at times are remote and sometimes unknown feelings.  Thank you very much!  It is now time for us to repay this gift, with our own thoughts and feelings to buoy your progress to a complete remittance of your cancer.  Get Well! ~ Jeff & Stacey Maher, Northridge CA

Dear Dan [and family], I was very relieved to read your website posting. Congratulations on your progress. I wish you the very best of everything.  Dear Dan, Thank you for your message.  I started learning to play guitar last year because of you.  I've been a fan of yours since the 70's and no other music has made such an impact through out my life.  Thank you for the inspiration!  I pray you get stronger every day.  I pray for Jean and your family too. ~ Terena in Ft. Worth, Texas

Dan, Hang in there... you are in my thoughts and prayers... thank you for your courage. Sincerely ~ Dan

Good morning Dan, Happpy Halloween! I am dropping you a note to share good news and support your encouragement to the men to have an annual PSA and DRE. I did as you advise and my own test results have come back positive. No question, no mystery, and as you know; not a major test or inconvenience. I suppose if anyone asked "what are you going to be for Halloween?" I 'd reply; "smiling," don't neglect to keep us all updated with yours! Love, Ken Harris YNP

Dear Dan, I have written you a few times because my husband also has advanced prostate cancer.  After a year of lupron/casodex treatment at M.D. Anderson, we also got good news.  The tumors along his spine have gone away and we are looking at reducing our visits to M.D. Anderson from going every three months to every six months.   It sounds like he will also get to reduce the amount of lupron he is taking. We were totally surprised!  We didn't think we would get good news. This is the first time since February 20, 2004 we have been able to relax and feel hopeful again. Thank you so much for posting a letter.  I check back every few months and I was thrilled to hear how you are doing. Best wishes to you and your family!

"The end of October, the sleepy brown woods seem to nod down their heads to the winter..."  Dear Dan, my thoughts and prayers remain with you and your family.  I am hoping that you are still writing and that you will be able to share the pain, the hope and the triumph of your experiences with us in your music once again.  My dream for years has been to see you in concert, and am hoping that it will come true when you are feeling strong again.  Keep fighting, keep hoping and keep living. Your fan ~ Amber in Montana

Dear Dan, Your music had a life-changing effect back when I was a teenager.  I have enjoyed every phase of your music.  When I listen to your albums, I feel as though I've invited a dear old friend into my home.  Wonderful news about your progress and my prayers are with you and your family.  God Bless.

Your friends here in Durango have wondered how you are, and are thinking of you and praying for you. Wishing you God's best!!  ~ Jim Eich

Dan...I have been praying for you and your family since I heard about your PC. You and your music have been with me since I was in high school...in the 70's. I first saw you perform in Pensacola, Fla. at the Bay Front Auditorium. It was wonderful. My sister and I drove to Biloxi, Miss. a few years ago for a concert at The Beau Rivage. You just take care of yourself and enjoy life...you will always be in our hearts! Godspeed ~ Trisha

Hi Dan, I wanted to send thoughts and prayers to you while you're going through treatment.  I have been a fan of yours since seeing you in Bloomington, IN as you were on the Nether Lands tour (few years ago!), and have seen you many times since.  Just wanted to pass on this note to thank you for the numerous hours of enjoyment I've had listening to your music, and look forward to seeing you tour in the future.  Take care ~ Mary Ajamie

Dear Dan:  You and I were diagnosed at the  same time last year...me with aggressive breast cancer at 44.  Having been so preoccupied with my own struggles, I was unaware of yours until an old  boyfriend reappeared in my life just recently after a 20 year absence.  It was he who introduced me to your music many years ago, and it was he who told me  of your cancer and this website.  I felt compelled to write to tell you how  much your songs have moved and inspired me, and how envious I am that I cannot  express myself so beautifully.  I felt so damaged after my surgeries and  chemo, simply gutted both physically and emotionally...I was a stranger to everyone, including myself. That old boyfriend I mentioned?  I'm  convinced heaven sent him.  I pray that your gifts from above are as  impactful and beneficial to your health as he has been to mine.  I shall  always link both him and your music in my mind, for both have truly lifted  me.  All my best wishes Dan. ~  Donna Hewa

Dear Dan, Greetings from one of your Kansas City fans!  I have continued to think a lot about you, and have often stopped and made a point of sending positive energy your way.  I hadn't checked your web site for a few months so was DELIGHTED to read your update.  You have spread so much beauty and joy through your art, I am happy to hear this has been responded to with love and well wishes from your fans all over the world.  Hopefully you have been able to feel and hold on to this while going through this incredible time. My husband and I have been listening to your music for over 30 years.  We are the richer for it.  I want him around for another 30 years, so will take your cue and insist he get the PSA test Thanks. So, wherever you are, stop for a moment and open yourself to the positive energy that continues to come your way from Kansas City. From a caring fan ~ Lyn

Dan and Jean, You both have been in my thoughts during this time of year of Harvest Moon and giving thanks for all that we have.  You can believe I am giving thanks for your progress and know that the prayers are still heading your way. Autumn is such a lovely time of year for me, my favorite.  I pray that you and Jean can enjoy this most special time of year and that you are feeling stronger and better each day.  And I will pray that if it be your choice and the Lord's, I will finally see you in concert.  But you are never far away, I have all your music to comfort me and to relax me on these cool fall evenings.  Nothing better than Dan on the player and a hot Latte in hand. Keep on healing my friend.  I think of the following Robert Frost poem this time of year especially and I find it comforting.  I hope you do also. Happy Fall, Thanksgiving Blessing and before that, Happy Halloween.  ~ Susan K Nash

The woods are lovely, dark and deep

But I have promises to keep.

And miles to go before I sleep.

And miles to go before I sleep.

~ Robert Frost

Hi Dan, I'm delighted to hear the news that your treatments are progressing well and the cancer is taking a back seat.  I'm not good at this, because I don't do the fan thing, but I'm somehow compelled to write and send my best wishes to you.  Your music has been a part of my life since the seventies, a backdrop to so many ups and downs. I'm a novelist and write with headphones, always.  The play list is wide and varied, from symphony, to jazz, to old Lovin' Spoonful, to the Goo Goo Dolls.  But always, mixed in the list, is every Fogelberg CD I own - which is all of them.  I've written so many scenes with your voice in my ear, your music drawing on the emotions I need to breathe life into the words on the page.  I'm so appreciative of your gift, I mentioned you in the acknowledgments of my first book.  Thank you for sharing your enormous talent with the world.  I hope and pray you'll continue toward the best of health and kick the cancer into the next century.  Give 'em hell, Dan! Sincerely ~ Stephanie Feagan

Dear Dan, It is so wonderful to hear the news.  Since hearing of your illness, having checked your website of news, I am so glad that you are improving.  Your music has been a blessing to me over the years, having followed your path for so many years.  I was so privilege to hear you sing 3 times in my lifetime.   Once in Beaver Creek where you performed for 500 of us in Berkeley, Ca. and at Wente winery in the Livermore, Ca. valley.  Your music and your presence has always been so deeply felt and I have been so moved my them.  I am especially glad to hear that you are recovering.  I have checked your web site periodically and tonight I'd thought I'd just try again to see if there was any news of your health.  I sit hear humming one of your songs, with a smile on my face. The best to you and your family, you are in my prayers and thoughts.  Your music lives on. Warmest regards ~ Sharon Hiles

Dear Dan, I have seen you perform about a half dozen times over the past 25 years.  Remember Ryder College in NJ?  Or some gym at Princeton U.?  I remember it.  I was there.  Then we moved on to the Continental Arena and the Garden State Arts Center.  I was there.  I was there. I had tickets to the State Theatre in New Brunswick when you had to cancel due to your health.  I was so upset.  I am an oncology nurse at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey.  I know what it means.  I know how scary it is.  I know how serious the treatments are.  I hope that every nurse and doctor that you have dealt with has made a difference for you.  I aspire to be the type of nurse that never tires of helping people when they are down.  When I walk in to my patient's room, I know the value of a big warm smile and a hand holding "hello".  I know this can take their day from dark to bright.  Anyway, I am sorry that you have no plans to perform or record but you must do what is best for you.  To thine own self be true.  Just get better.  Enjoy your family, your friends, the fresh air, your life.  Know how many people love you.  I will never forget your music.  I have an unusual favorite Dan Fogelberg song, wanna hear?  "Be On Your Way."  How funny is that?  Some people have never even heard of it.  But you and I know how lovely it is. God Bless you.  God Bless Jean.  Your fans miss you terribly.

Dan Fogelberg's music has gotten us through a tough time of our lives. My 3 year old watches the Greetings From The West video and knows all the words. Thanks so much for all the years of creativity. You are in our prayers ,  Dan.  ~ Marina and Jeff Bater

Dear Dan- I was checking the 'Net to see if you were touring in my area-regrettably I missed your performances in Fort Worth last year. I'm so sorry I just found out  about your ongoing battle with cancer. Though I'm so glad to hear you are improving. I just want to wish you and your wife the very best and let you know  you both are in my prayers.  I have been a fan for many years and your  music has always been positively enriching especially through tough times  in my life. I wish you continued blessings. Take care. Sincerely ~ Don Naegele, McKinney, TX

I didn't realize it had been so long since I visited this site.  What a fantastic gift to read your update, Dan and what a wonderful blessing that you are sharing your story.  I have been a very loyal fan since 1976....my friend Tina had "Home Free" and we played it over and over and over (and over !) that year in the dorm.  Tina had no idea she was starting me on this amazing journey with your powerful music.  She and I lost touch with each other several years ago, but this "relationship" goes on...and it will continue!  The memories I have include concerts, one surreal back stage meeting (Columbus), and endless hours of home/car listening.  I saw you at Blossom (Cleveland) when I was pregnant and I am sure that is why my daughter also enjoys your music so much.  When she was 3, one of her favorites was "She Don't Look Back" and I can still see her dancing and singing her little heart out.  A number of years later, I took her to see you at the Murat (Indpls)....what a

fabulous way to come full circle with her.  (no pun intended).

I have been praying for you and will continue to do so; may you feel the love of God as well as that of your friends/fans surrounding you.  Thank you for the many words, life experiences and feelings you have shared through your music and your willingness. May you be doubly blessed for all the blessings you have shared on the planet.

Dan - My wife and I just finished watching the "Greetings from the West" DVD and we got to wondering how you were doing, so we checked the website.  Glad to hear a positive report.  Our prayers and best wishes are with you and your wife. We had the wonderful experience of attending your concert in Toledo, OH quite a few years ago.  It remains a musical highpoint in our lives to this day.  "Longer" was played at our wedding 25 years ago (bet you haven't heard that before).  Anyway, keep up the fight as your fans keep you in their hearts and thanks for all the joy you've brought to us all through the years. Friends in Ohio ~ Don & Joyce Dauer

Dear Mr. Fogelberg, I am sitting in my sewing room, where I am making a quilt for my daughter and listening to your remarkable composition of songs on "The Innocent Age".  I was compelled to see if I could find any information on your progress and to my surprise found a personal update. What a wonderful surprise to read that you are doing so well. I cannot tell you how much pleasure your music has given me over the years and I just wanted you to know that you and Jean are in my prayers. Best wishes to you for continued recovery and to you both for the strength to fight as you continue on. Love and many thanks ~ Donna Catron

Dear Dan, I am so thrilled to hear that you are healthier and happier today - what great news!  Prayers and love for the road ahead.  You have inspired so many, I'm glad that some from us have helped you along the way.  Your music has been very dear to me for many years, and helped express many joys throughout my life.  I thank you for all you have brought to me and my family.  My daughters have been raised  with your music, too, and both are budding musicians. I still hope to hear the music that comes from this time in your life, and can't imagine you not continuing to write and play. Much love,  Emily, Caribou (Nederland), Colorado

I am sitting here in Trondheim, Norway just reflecting upon how much your music has meant to me over the last 30 years. As a student in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the seventies I heard your music for the first time and  since then it has meant a lot to me. It is something in the music and the lyrics that is very special even to someone living in such a cold far away place. I hope that my brief words can give you comfort. You are loved even here! All the best. ~ Magne Lyngmo.

Dan- In the mid-70's, you did a concert in New Orleans that was a special treat because you sang your way through a bout with the flu. Your courage and dedication to your fans made me an even bigger fan myself.  You've been in my thoughts and prayers since I found out about your cancer, and I rejoice in the good news that you share now. I'm going to turn the tables and ask you for prayers for your New Orleans fans. Our area has been all but obliterated by Hurricane Katrina, and New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are not the beautiful places you knew when you played here. As we heal and re-build, it is my prayer that if you decide to go on the road again, that you'll include our area on your tour and we can all celebrate new beginnings together. ~ Rick Lightfoot

Dan - Your music is my favorite.  It has taken me through college days to now. My favorite memories will be sitting out under the stars at Red Rocks listening to you in what seemed your "own backyard."  My prayers are with you in your recovery and I will be looking for more new music that is both enjoyable and inspiring. Your friend in Tomball Texas ~ Rick Brown

Dan, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, and I am thrilled to hear you are making progress medically. I wanted to thank you for the years of music that you have provided. Your words and music have been an inspiration for me for over 30 years. I've seen you perform from Biloxi, MS to Birmingham AL, to St. Louis MO and other points in between.  Every time I listen to your albums (yes, I am that old), CDs (yes, they do have less pops and crackles) and you live in concert, I am awed by your musical talent. You have a true gift and I am thankful that you have shared it across the world over the years. I will keep my fingers crossed should you ever decide to resume touring. I hope to see you down the road. I wish you Godspeed and a long, healthy, and happy life. ~ Keith Ridgway

Dear Dan, I didn't know until just now that you were diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. I want to extend my thoughts, prayers, and best wishes for the best and most thorough recovery! I watched a concert of yours on PBS while I was sick with the flu about a year ago, and I had no idea you'd been ill. You've been an enormous influence and inspiration to me, and I "cut some of my teeth" on classical guitar by learning your solos and progressions on " Wysteria", "Give Me Some Time", and "Guitar Etude No. 3." Your music has been a part of me for over 25 years, and as I continue to play, I can't help but think of certain tunes of yours when I land on certain chords. Best Wishes ~ Brent (B.G.) McPike

Hi Dan, Just read the good news about your improving health on your website.  Continuing to keep you in my prayers and, yes, my husband goes for his tests every year.  Thanks for reminding men of its importance!! Blessings ~ Pam Cipriano, Islip Terrace, NY

Dan, Back in 2004 I heard that you were diagnosed with prostate cancer and thought to myself No-that can't be! Not cancer.  He's my favorite musical artist. I silently wished you well at that moment and went about my busy life. This morning as I was jogging on the treadmill with your songs playing through the headset, I realized that your music brings out a warm spiritual glow like no other music  I've ever listened to (and that's a lot). Your insightful lyrics and soft  melodies have touched my soul since my freshman year of college in 1976. My personal experience with this dreaded disease happened in  March 1996 when my father died of lung cancer - a short eight  months after the diagnosis. It was the worst of times. He was sick (and  tried not to show it) and it was sad. I didn't want him to go yet I knew he couldn't stay. I thought of him as I heard about you and hoped your fate  would be different. I am not an avid web surfer, but thought I would take the  time today to look up your website. I was happy to read that you are doing  better 14 months after the diagnosis. Stay strong and live well.

Best wishes ~ Susan Dissmore, Federal Way, WA

Dear Dan Fogelberg, I am a longtime fan who has been listening to your  music for over 26 years.  Your lyrics are my favorite poems and sometimes I like to just break them apart and try to find all the deep meaning that is so eloquently hidden in them.  I probably quote a Fogelberg line at least once a day.  I got to see you in concert when I was in college at Auburn University in Alabama.  It was incredible.  I have you posted on my  MySpace page as the person I would like to meet most.  It was there that  someone told me about your cancer.  I must tell you that your music has  touched me, shaped me, changed me, encouraged me, and educated me.  Your  music has worded thoughts, feelings and passions of my life.  Sometimes when someone was broken or hurt, I have shared your lyrics with them so that  they could know how to express what they felt.  That is your gift. Giving those of us who don't have your gift the ability to express ourselves in  a deep and meaningful way. That is why there are so many who have expressed their love for you.  You have been the instrument for so many to play the chords of life that are deep and in a minor key.  You are the strings section.  You complete our symphony.  I want to thank you for  being that for me.  My college age children are fans as well.  They  share your music with their friends.  A new generation of Fogelberg fans is ever growing.  And the timelessness of your music assures that their  children will be fans as well.  I will be praying for you as you go through this difficult time.  I will be praying that you will regain all of your  strength and share your music in concert again if that is a desire of your  heart.  I will be watching your website to see how you are  progressing.  God bless you!! ~ Linda Dean

Dear Dan, You are in our prayers. Keep the faith and good spirits. Enjoy every moment. ~ CK

Dan- I have to tell you (as I'm sure, many have) that you're my wife's favorite! Every time that you came to Florida, we were there! My wife, Lisa, would have done anything to have met you while you were in our area. She always told me that she'd never leave me unless Dan were at the front door! We always tried to say "hello" to you after each concert, but to no avail. What we are saying to you now is the best of luck to you, and you are in our prayers!  May God watch over you and your family. Get well and maybe we'll get to meet you someday (It would be Lisa's lifetime dream)! ~ Kirk and Lisa Sutton

Dear Dan, I was a junior in high school when I first heard your amazing music. That was 1975. I was fortunate enough to see you in concert in Tampa in '76 or '77. Your music has touched my life - then and today - in ways I cannot put into words. It is joyful, haunting, poignant, soothing, mesmerizing, intricate, delicate, powerful, breathtaking. It has reached into my heart and soul the way no other music has, ever. You have been blessed with a talent, pure and unique, and I am forever grateful to you for sharing it with the world, and me. I am a breast cancer survivor, five years out, and felt an instant and fresh bond to you when I heard of your diagnosis. Faith in God was my strength through my treatment and is still today. He will guide you, comfort you and sustain you. I will continue to pray for your health and your family and I will continue to thank God for blessing us all with the gift of you.   ~ Mary Pieper, Florida

Dear Dan - I was shocked to hear of your diagnosis a few months ago and was deeply saddened.  Being "only" a fan, I felt that it would be out of place to intrude on your privacy, even to post good wishes.  But for some reason, in the past few days, I've been thinking about you quite a bit.  I realised that it was MY pride holding me back from wishing you all the best.  Anyone can, and should, send love and good thoughts to someone they care about - even if one person is an artist and the other is "just" a fan.  I was glad to read in your letter that you are feeling better and that the treatment is going well.  Thank you for your call for prostate cancer testing.  We all know someone who has suffered with it, and a lot us are afraid -  but you hit the nail (hard), right on the head. I admire both you and your wife, for your bravery and spirit. Truly - all the best ~ Francie Berens

For Dan, I remember really not being able to stand up from my computer after reading about your diagnosis. Not Dan, I prayed, do not touch him!! I went and picked up my guitar and songbook and started in on "Part of the Plan", Music has been therapy for me over the years. You are woven into the very fabric of who I am as an artist and human being. I thank you for the courage, the spirit, the song. May you continue to be blessed on this journey, blessed the traveler who journeys the length of the light. With prayer and love ~ Karen

I am not in the habit of website surfing, but I was just listening to your music.... I found out so late about your dilemma. I feel that I have let you down, and that I should have known sooner; to give you some encouragement, something... you, and your music have never let me down, your music has said the things that I always wish I could say, and feel. In my heart of hearts, I know if you put a fraction of the energy you showed on stage into your struggle, you will overcome.

I was just listening to Nether Lands for the millionth (is that a word?) time, and was wondering how Dan was doing.  To say that we miss you on the concert circuit is an understatement.  I was thinking of my son Patrick's first venture into the concert world in Santa Fe when he was 8 years old and wanted to throw rocks on stage to show his appreciation.  Hey, what can I say, the child was born on August 13th, so he's always been a little different.  He is now 16 and learning to play a much harder type of music, but I like to think we gave him a good start with a Fogelberg performance. I truly pray for your full recovery every night, and was very happy to see recovery is well on its way.  While I am sure it is one day at a time, don't forget those of us who listen, appreciate and applaud your courage (and talent) and are anxiously awaiting the day to stand in line to get our Fogelberg tickets again. ~ Becky Mc, Rio Rancho, NM

Dear Dan - I was thrilled to read your recent letter.  Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and wonder how you're doing.  I'm happy to hear that your cancer appears to be going into remission.  I, myself, am in a battle for my life after recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer so I can definitely relate to the miseries of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.  I wish you continued success in your battle!  Please continue to keep us posted on your progress.  We appreciate hearing from you.  ~ Vicki Adair, San Jose, CA

Hi Dan and Jean, I want to let you know just how much your music continues to give me strength and hope every day while I continue on a rough journey myself. I survived a ruptured congenital cerebral aneurysm in 2001 that left me partially disabled. I am an RN that can no longer practice bedside nursing. Thus, I am getting an advanced degree in nursing with the goal of public health nursing or educator. Your song, "Icarus Ascending", says it all. I keep moving forward and "will not look down". My faith is indeed my strength and my love for all people is that shining star, so thank-you for the affirmation that keeps me going when the days get rough. I also just recently visited the Ace Basin that is close to my home. I've been so busy in the 20 years that I've lived in Charleston, I didn't know it was so close. The Nature Conservancy helped to preserve this beautiful bird sanctuary in 1991. I hope you're well enough to see it one day if you haven't already. With your love of Maine (me too) and the environment, you would really appreciate its beauty. I'll never forget your Wilderness Society concert. Of course I won't forget any of your concerts as I've seen many. As always, I wish you all the best as you continue to heal. Am I selfish to want you to return to the studio and stage? You bet! You've always been my favorite musician and you always will be. Jean: You are such a great source of support for your husband. The road may be rough at times, but somehow I know this too shall come to pass. My love to you both. May you have a very Happy Thanksgiving. Your friend and most loyal fan ~ Cindy Fabian

Have faith only in medical science and in humanity. But I can believe that there were three powers working for you. I love your web site, where you encourage men to be tested for prostate cancer. I beleive you'll save a few lives there. Guess that's my faith in humanity. I'm not like a normal person with music, I listen to the same album about  50 times before I can change it. I did Stevie Ray last year. I started your Hits at Christmas. My sister and brother-in-law are big fans of you. I have one CD left in the collection. I like the way you've always kept a low profile. You've got to live above all else. All we have is time. Hold it close to you. I wish we'd been kids together when time was for free and I could have learned to savour music differently. I obsess about it now. I don't know what comes after the fourth CD in your collection. My brother-in-law sent me something really nice (you), but I think its time to switch to some Brazilian exercise/slave music. I will always love you. It was a good year. Laugh hard, my friend. Sending you virtual hug. ~ Susan Salo, London Ontario

Dear Dan, I don't recall ever writing to an artist to express my appreciation for his or her work. This note is to say I join with the many other people in this world who have listened and been enriched by the music you have created and shared with us. Your special music is one of those rare sounds that recall the events of one's life. Your songs pull memories to my mind of places and people, of times so dear and full and I love the sound of it.  It is a trailhead to things maybe forgotten but soon in full recollection when I hear one of your works.

It is no surprise you were a painter first.  It seems you began to paint with words and music.  I am also an artist and teach drawing and animation after working in feature animation.  I see stories and glimpses and feel grateful for the hearing. You are in my prayers as is your wife and family.  I pray for your health and happiness. You have given much to us and I just want to say thank you. ~ Laurie Siqueido, La Mirada, California

Hello Dan: I found your website today, and I wondered what had become of you. I have loved your music for a good many years; it is wonderful. In fact, just today at work, I played Greetings from the West for the young woman in her early 20's who works with me (I'm 43); she had never heard your music and she loved it, too.   I was shocked to hear of your cancer diagnosis, but am very happy to hear that you are doing better and winning the battle. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Jean and your family. Take good care of YOU and God bless. ~ Debbie Wunsch  Milford, New Hampshire.

So happy to hear things are going well. I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers.

Dear Dan,  I just read your update on your website. We are relieved to here of your progress. I just want you to know how much your music and positive message has meant to me and many friends over the years. You probably don't recall but we all saw you at the Jackson, MS City Auditorium right after "Home Free" came out. I'll never forget how you looked almost surprised to receive a standing ovation when you walked on the stage before performing anything. Our progressive FM station WZZQ took a liking to your first album and turned us all on to it, and hopefully you know that we all loved it. There will always be a special place in Mississippi's heart for you and your music, and we hope that you'll be able to come visit us soon. We saw you again on the MS Gulf Coast a couple of years ago and when we rebuild the "Coast" nothing could make us happier than to see you on stage there again.  Best of luck ~ Larry Gray

Wow.  I am so glad you are doing well Dan.  I have listened to your music since I was around 13 years old. Your voice has been a calming  presence through my teens and adulthood.  My sons grew up listening to your  voice (or your songs when I sang them) and have wonderful voices.  The  music they listened to, I am sure, helped develop their talent and love of  music.  I grew up in a small town north of Peoria (LaSalle) and moved to Peoria in the early 1980's.  I told my ex-husband when we married that I  would leave for one person...You!!  LOL.  Anyway, I am so glad you are  doing well.  You, your wife and family are in my prayers. ~ Angel

Hi Dan... I just found your latest update - what wonderfully encouraging news!  I sincerely hope that things will continue to improve for you.  Sounds like you've been through quite enough already!  I have a friend who is also dealing with prostate problems (and he, too, lives in Colorado!), so I sympathize with your ordeal. As I mentioned in an earlier message I've been a fan of your music for a long, LONG time.  And I've been "filling in" my collection of your albums.  I recently got "The Wild Places" and fell in love with "Aurora Nova".   May God and Spirit continue to bless you and watch over you... Take good care ~ Jan McNutt, Cleveland, Ohio

Dan - great news that you are winning the battle. Don't worry about getting back on the road or to the studio. We have enough of your music to last us a long time - you just get well. When you do though, how about visiting the UK?! Very best wishes ~ Carl

Dear Dan, It has been such a beautiful fall here in Colorado. The colors have blossomed and simmered beyond our expectations, and it seems that everyone is smiling. I was hiking above Boulder with my brother and his new dog, and felt your presence very near in these beautiful hills. Your music plays in my mind in these moments as I realize how blessed I have been to live here for 30 years. Your music was the greatest inspiration that propelled me to move here for college, and part of why I fell hopelessly in love with the spirit of these mountains. I was thrilled to see you at the E-town taping at Boulder Theater, several years ago. Thanks for returning to us often. We miss you so very much. I wish you every joy imaginable. Happy harvest time, high country snows, and the promise of a brilliant spring. You are so richly loved and treasured!

Hey Dan: I've been listening since Home Free, which remains one of my all-time favorite albums, song for song.  Nether Lands too.  What can I say, I'm a fan of your music generally. Pleased to finally read you are better.  May God continue to bless your life, and the two of you enjoy the years ahead. Be well ~ Will

Just sending my love.  Stay strong.

Hello Dan, This is my first email to you but please know that you have been in my thoughts ever since I first found out that you had been diagnosed with cancer.  I am so glad that you are on the rebound and are beating this disease.  You have always been my favorite songwriter, singer, and entertainer, and I look forward to your return to writing, singing, and performing in the future.

As an 'old timer,' I still have most of your music on records from my college days in the 70's.  Your music was such a part of my life during college and early adulthood.  I saw you perform several times, including an acoustic show at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford, CT a few years ago, and it was definitely the best concert I ever attended. Continued best wishes for a speedy recovery. All the best ~ Donna Ellis

Dear Dan, My dearest n sincerest wishes to you and for your good health. I'm here in the heart of Ireland, Athlone to be exact. My father in law has just been diagnosed with Acute myeloid Leukemia. He's a very dear and kind man. The strongest man I know. I'm thirty eight years old and have taken great strength from your songs and spirit. Please keep us in your prayers. I've listened to you since I've been thirteen. All My good wishes always. ~ Anne Nally, Ireland

Dan, My wife and I are longtime fans of your music and we saw you on the Full Circle tour near Dayton. I bet you remember it because it was such a surprisingly cold night for June. We want to send our wishes and prayers to  you on your continued road to recovery. We look forward to the day when you  feel 100 percent healed. Thank you for the prostrate examination reminder, I  will remind my doctor to screen me again. Thank you for all of the wonderful music you`ve shared over the years and may you continue to be  blessed on the pathway to radiant health. ~ Don & Alice Laybourne

Dear Dan, I'm a 47 year old Southern Man who cut his own acoustic teeth playing "Stars" and MANY other of your early songs.  I've spent hundreds of hours with you in the living room and my old truck (so if you wake up and wonder where you've been...) and I can't begin to tell you how much you have enriched the days.  I've recently been thinking about you a bit (I had heard a news brief about your cancer) and as one of your songs will often pop into my head I naturally think how your battle is going. Thanks for sharing your private battle with the public through the web site.  I have asked the Father for mercy on your behalf.  ".and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.   Eph 3:19-21" If you ever go looking for someone to hold down the harmony part give me a call.  I bring the old 6 string and hot coffee. ~  Johnny Nobles, Dothan, AL

I just wish you peace in the journey. ~ Dorman

Dear Mr. Fogelberg, As I write this "Same Old Lang Syne" is playing in the background (my personal favorite).  I've been a fan of yours for since I first heard your "Twin Sons" album.  We saw you in June of 2003 and planned on seeing you again last year when we heard of your diagnosis.  We are thrilled to hear your treatment is working.  Our son was diagnosed with a brain tumor May 2004 and understand the fear of hearing that news, so we empathize with your wife.  Our son is doing beautifully now, and we pray that we hear the same news about you very soon. ~  Lisa & Tom

Dan, it would be impossible for me to tell you just what your music has meant to my wife, Beth, and me all these years. Offering advice after all you've been through is not useful. I'm sure you've heard it all and have tried what you feel is best for you.By all accounts, you are doing the right thing. Please just know that the love and positive thoughts of so many are with you. That is the best medicine there is, bar none. Let your heart and soul be filled daily with that love and support and fight on. The Great Spirit loves a true warrior and that, my friend, is what you are. Some day he will embrace you and warm you by his fire. But not for a long, long time. With love and deep respect ~ Kim L. Hubbard
